Fixing Melee (Warrior/Mace)
Think back to something jonathan said in the interview with josh strife hays, he said that they ended up deciding to make a new game instead of updating poe1 to fix melee, in the same interview he said that you cant just make melee characters do more damage than ranged to compensate for that. Enough time has gone by for them to fix melee.
"if you make ranged characters weak compared to the melee characters, it just feels bad" "if you make the melee characters deal too much damage that also feels bad"(what?) He justifies this by essentially saying the game is too easy if a melee character does too much damage. I would argue that the reason ranged characters feel bad if they do less damage is because they end up in melee range of monsters and THATS actually the thing that feels bad. Its kind of funny because he spends a lot of time justifying his points about this. "In general you don't really lose control of your character anymore, that allows you to have longer attack times while not feeling bad." He also says this, you can totally be stunned and frozen out of attacks. What i think he meant by this is you can dodge roll out of your attacks. Then you just end up dodge rolling out of a 2 second attack time skill and put hammer on cooldown to dodge roll then you do 0 damage. The thing I find most comical is that the ENTIRE time people are playing the game, the vast majority of players are looking for a way to shit on the monsters with no challenge at all. That is literally the majority of players. This is something that goes against their melee vision, which is for melee archetypes to actually be a challenge and not shit on the game. Now you can do garbage stupid crap like the herald of ice unique ring shit but thats completely stupid. Warrior has been nerfed every patch. Yet, it still feels unanimously like its the worst by a mile especially since its the most basic of power fantasy (Bows/sorc/warrior). These 3 archetypes should be the bread and butter. If you want it to be better than what it is right now you're in for a long road ahead of you unless axes/swords are our saviour. The way warrior plays right now is their vision for the game, they just didn't tell anyone designing any other class and they're doing nothing about that balance atm. To be honest that answer just sounds to me like big copium from a ranged fanboy doing mental gymnastics to justify no downsides only benefits from ranged. Assuming it´s not a game that screenclears with one button like POE2 don´t want to be. There´s 2 general downsides being a melee character in need to get up close to enemies: 1. More downtime from attacking while running up to monsters, resulting in less actual DPS even with the exact same tooltip DPS. 2. More difficult to avoid enemies attacks while up in their face. Of course ranged need both less DPS and Defences to compensate for that HUGE benefit of attacking from distance. There´s just no way around it. |

If you haven't seen these 2 videos they're worth a watch for some perspective. Basically just don't play warrior with maces unless you're doing auto attack with that stupid ring. |

" Yeah, pound per pound, melee should always be doing more than ranged. Doesn't need to be much, only 10-15% at comparable weapon/spell damage and DPS. Problem with the slow skills is that I take too much damage even when trying to be careful about it. I love the slow, hate that I am paper mache. If they give us the tools to make this shit work, and reasonably buff access to Life, we'll be in a good spot. |

If you want my advice. Just play something else until axes/marauder/swords come out. They have no plans on making it better atm. 15% armour is what were getting.

" Lmao you're right, my basic attack is wiping three screen wide with HoI and Polcirkeln, my HoG is oneshoting T4 breach boss with trampletoe/shield wall interaction. With all bosses can be oneshotable, both stun system and aftershock are dogshit now.So now titan is a class with only 6 Ascendancy passive points worth to use lmao. So even more I swap to gemling with same build and do even even better. tankier(double hp from str), better QoL(less attribute requirement) better AOE(DOUBLE Magnified Effect on HoI and basic attack XD) better damage(less attribute requirement=more damage mods to stack) Even if Mace skills were designed well, compared to this build, all other choices feel like a joke. Not to mention that right now, there's basically no Mace skill that could even barely be considered usable—most of them are garbage. |
