An unfinished version of 0.9.11 is up on alpha as of yesterday. The patch will probably be released in about a week.

Is the increase in item quantity/quality the only benefit of maps?

That's not very exciting or helpful.

How about adding (decently common and possibly with negative item quantity/quality) map mods like:

"All the loot is weapons"
"All the loot is evasion gear"
"All the loot is daggers"
"X% Increased amount of sockets/links on items"
"X% increased chance of finding skill gems"

and similar, that would give you a better chance to find what you actually need and not a whole pile of junk you can only sell to the vendors for a couple alteration shards?
