Single player game = Early Access
Single player RPG with an "online" tag. This won't negatively affect those who like to play single player games, but for me it's the primary reason why based on the info I have won't be spending my time on the early access, especially with the current state of PoE.
The early access and PoE2 formula (in my opinion) does not offer the type of social experience that's necessary or required for an "online" role playing game and whatever difficulty the game will have isn't going to be difficult for me, especially if its the only difficulty mode. Without a ladder ranking the "hardcore" difficulty (if it exists) will be irrelevant, especially if its the same exp level based that'll remain there for over six months. In the reveal I don't recall a mention of any ranking / ladder feature and its also missing on the PoE2 website with two weeks before release. There could be some in-game only ladder, but at least I'm not aware of it. The message I got from Mark and why to be excited is so we can try which builds do better to experience or overcome the "theme park", which I'm aware will be designed for the majority to experience, except there's places like youtube and twitch, while I get to skip the time sinks (grinds) along the way. Poe-racing.com shutting down because of some past "achievements" and being related to the recent changes GGG choose to make with PoE2, well it is what is. Finally, without the game featuring any ranking / competition, well PoE already suffered with low twitch viewership for a long time and I don't see that improving with the early access after a month from release. GGG still remains as that company I primarily care about and that means how I'm looking forward to support their products over everything else, which is why it does feel like a letdown or a disappointment where PoE and the early access is versus where it could be. Still, I'm very thankful for everything so far and why I'm not too disappointed with negative thoughts or ill hatred. Through the decade GGG received $70 from me, so I cannot be too disappointed. I would really like or hope to see myself supporting GGG with at least $700 to $1000 through the next decade, but again it doesn't depend on me, since I'm just a consumer within a specific market/audience. I'm confused. Why do you think there would not be a ladder for POE2? I have not seen any confirmation that it would not be there, but I may have missed it. However, a ladder seems like a pretty standard feature, one of the easiest things to implement & I am still working under the impression that there will be one for POE2.

@Metronomy
As I stated above due to no mention about any ranking / ladder during the reveal as well as its absence from the PoE2 website and with two weeks before the release, when the support packs/keys are already available in the store. I'm sure GGG would like to advertise/showcase everything or as many features of what the early access game will offer. They presented their product and I made the choice not to purchase a supporter pack/key based on assumption. |

I found a video here where Jonathan talks about races / other POE events & private leagues.
https://youtu.be/QPrCIqsNtK0?t=20294 tl/dr He basically says he is interested in having these type of events but might not be present in POE2 early access immediately. Though he is talking about events here not the core ladder - I would assume a simple ladder would still be there, not that it's a real race or anything. I wouldn't expect the ladder to be there until the EA league is set up such that people can create characters in it - like normal races used to work that way. |

" That's OK. The EA is NOT intended to be competetive. It's there to iron out bugs AND, via payed access, earn some money. Once released, there will very probably be ladders and HC. You can spend your $1000 over a decade then. However, I foresee more forum posts revolving aroud getting paid to play the game. Bird lover of Wraeclast

@Mikrotherion with your response "That's OK. The EA is NOT intended to be competetive"
Did GGG really want to send that message on the best opportunity with hundreds of thousands watching? The early access is expected to last for over six months and then you have PoE1 and where it's been this year. What GGG can do for both games depends on its lead developer team, the resources allocated (like total employees currently hired) and most importantly the quarterly or annual revenues. GGG choices of the past and present will define its future. |

" oh man, and i just hanged up my laundry " wasn't this covered with that second interview? where Jonathan stated they actually removed the race events due to them not bringing new players and existing players raging about fairness of some of the more 'out of the box' races instead of just having fun? i don't envy GGG at all Last edited by AintCare#6513 on Nov 25, 2024, 8:57:02 PM

I don't recall the specifics, but if that's true and whatever Johnathan, Mark and other devs said or think about ladder/ranking/competition as a feature that will be absent, especially since it wasn't discussed or ignored during the reveal, it doesn't look good, especially when PoE has been in a similar state through most of the year with the next league predicted to arrive end of February. Profits come from long term consistency in delivering a product that will hopefully appeal, attract, engage and retain more markets/supporters who won't be thinking, wishing, waiting for the next X game. GGG has its limit in how great or successful/profitable game (or now games) they can produce and maintain which is understandable. Opportunities come rarely, but they do exist, which is why timing matters, like being the first and setting an example, a standard for the future and industry of what more should come/follow. PoE2 early access does show a certain quality of a product, but as the thread title states, its still being advertised as a single player RPG with an online tag. yeh you talking profits and growth. from what i have observed with other games rapid growth never ends well for the game in a long term. not sure what you are basing your theories on but i'm pretty sure the guys that can see the stats will be better at predicting the trends. i was in fact sad to hear, even the streamers were, that races in fact caused more trouble than gain for them, but Jonathan said he loved the idea and would like to bring them back, just not sure how and if they will actually do it due to the aforementioned issues.
