What went wrong in the development of poe 2? Is it possible that poe 2 will be canceled?
Maybe
Flames and madness. I'm so glad I didn't miss the fun.

Well personally I hope POE 1 will still be around for a little longer. My main char are only lvl 60 so I would love to finish the game at least once. ( did when it had fewer acts ) I would have loved for new classes but it seems they are the same. Maybe different skills etc but I would have loved for it to be something like before POE 1 that told the story leading up to POE 1. Or after POE 1 where new heroes are born. But that is just my 2 cents.

"PoE "1" will be around forever, just like PoE "2" once it comes out. Both are the same game, the name is just marketing fluff. Nothing stops you from enjoying your old characters or playing the old campaign.
" However poe2 will be new animations/graphics and systems, so it not entirely same game, even if poe1 support continues. |
|
"Realistically it will be the same game because those new systems will be the new baseline experience for both campaigns. Both will also share the exact same endgame. I'd call it a massive expansion at best but a new game? That's farfetched. Keep your expectations in check.
" Act 5, not Act 6. And honestly, Act 5 is far...far better than anything after it. But insofar as clever recycling of assets go, returning to a Wraeclast ravaged by weakened avatars chucking a tantrum is far from the worst idea. :) If I didn't know better I'd swear Chris Wilson is trying to pull a Sean Murray -- way too chatty early on, got his tongue burned a few times, and then just went deep underground to do his job. Not that GGG need a redemption arc -- Exiles never lost the love. But there is a culture in game development atm of just dropping big announcements out of nowhere. Release dates sooner than expected. Expansions for games with fairly niche audiences. After what Blizzard and now Wolcen Studio have done, GGG will need to give a date for PoE 4.0 in July. Unless they are content with their hardcore base, in which case eh, SNAFU on, dudes. https://linktr.ee/wjameschan -- everything I've ever done worth talking about, and even that is debatable. "Oops! Yes, it was Acts 5-10 and it was a huge surprise at the time. There is scene in the movie "Patton" where George figures out that the Germans are planning a winter offense and he gets his Third Army prepared to change course as soon as it materializes. This seems a similar moment in regards to PoE2 (or 4 if you want). -A winter time in NZ ExileCon with avid players on site -2+ years of development and testing -Positive financials -An increasingly vocal and disgruntled crowd of players -No anticipation of such an announcement What better time to make the announcement? Welcome to NZ! Since you are here would you like a beta ticket? Would you like to play a bit of PoE2? Oh, and yes the game will launch December 7! That is the winning move. And just in time for a final burst of supporter pack sales just prior to the end of the fiscal year. "Gratitude is wine for the soul. Go on. Get drunk." Rumi

" Not sure you are really grasping the situation here. "PoE2" is just update 4.0 for this game. There isn't going to be "support" for version 3.29 or whatever we are at by the time it releases, once the update releases everyone will be playing on 4.0 just like any other update. That update includes model and animation upgrades and a new optional campaign. You will boot the game up as usual using the same shortcut, you will see all your old characters there, and when you make a new character you will have the option to start in the current campaign or the new one. Whichever campaign you pick, once you complete it you always go to the same post-game with all your other characters in that league. As for the original topic here, there's basically 0 chance it will be "canceled." What "went wrong" was they underestimated the work involved, and probably made some significant iterative changes along the way. They are too deep to pull out at this point, but what will likely happen is it's not going to live up to years of expectations building up and will already start to feel dated on arrival. The more you hype something and the longer you make people wait for it, the more unreasonable their expectations become until you reach a point where no matter what you put out people are going to be disappointed to some degree. I don't think it's going to sputter and flop, but it's not going to get the same amount attention and praise it would have if it released before Diablo 4 like was planned. They missed the window, but it will still come out even if it's another 4 years out and sucks.
" They never specifically stated they will be ready with an open beta for 2020. " Narcisissm is a strong word for a company that just wants to make one nice fair for their fans and to generate some public attention. As someone working in the area of public communication I can let u know: Events like that are a giant money sink and you woulnd´t plan those if you hadn´t something important to talk about. " Don´t know where you get your "impression" from, but I would think it´s just reddit or this forum. The numbers for this league, especially in regards to retention, look good. Someone else on this forum made a post about GGGs financial situation, which also looks just allright. And league-start numbers always look more or less fine. Aside from the big nerf-fest that 3.15 was there haven´t been any noticeable drops in league-start player numbers or revenue aside from standard deviations so your impression is simply wrong.
Well it's worth noting that PoE2 isn't a new game, it's just a large patch / expansion to the game, so it's coming.... eventually.
With the sunken cost on the development side, and the pain PoE1 is suffering because of it, I'm sure PoE 4.0 will definitely see the light of day. When will that be? Who knows. It's basically impossible for 2023, but perhaps the 1st quarter of 2024? I suppose it will depend on the beta's that will likely come this winter. Exilecon is going to be super awkward. Everyone and their brother will be playing D4, and it's likely the associated legaue will be their worst in many years numbers wise. It's a shitshow, but what can they do? They created this situation. My personal opinion is that GGG has waited too long, and perhaps the development creep got them. Now D4 will have a solid footing, and while Wolcen's announcement on console porting isn't exactly an industry stopper, it still matters somewhat in terms of the customer base. (Same with Grim Dawn. Some might chuckle but the console market is big. The RoS console numbers are huge for example, and it's directly competitive.) I get the sinking suspicion whenever PoE 4.0 does come out, many will be left wondering, "This took 5 years to develop with an already existing solid game, and this is all we got?!" It's a fair question to ponder tbh. Giving D4 a few seasons to establish itself, fix any problems, launch new seasonal content and set items, and more, could be a disaster for GGG. Not that PoE is going to die, but imo PoE has seen its peak, and the better days are behind them. I'd like to be wrong, and competition is good for the market, it just looks Grim atm for the game.
