I think PoE 2 will feel more different from PoE, than certain CoD iteration do from each other. Or FIFA. Or whatever. So what is "modern standards"?

I think we can sit and judge for the rest of the year, but I think the only thing that can (or cannot) justify the "2", is the feeling your left with after playing it.
Sometimes, just sometimes, you should really consider adapting to the world, instead of demanding that the world adapts to you.
They could call it PoE 102 for all I care. It's just a label.

POE2 is the most overhyped expansion in PoE history.

It's basically a glorified 3.0 patch with some semi minor exceptions like the new skill gem sytem but that is all about it. It does not change how you play the base game. You have more 5-6 links but probably in exchange for less power on said gems (massive nerf in gem power and added damage)

People will unlock all ascendancies in the new campaign and switch back to the easier A10 campaign with less annoying boss fights and probably less back tracking in the campaign zones.

Also they have to remake 100% of the old cosmetic armour sets anyways to make it fit with the new rigging so they dont clip or warp.

Its ambitious, even though the overall fundamental scope is quite low. It's a new campaign with shared endgame in the most basic 30000ft view.

That said the development scope is pretty deep with mechanical changes, gear shifts (from sockets to nothing), new weapons, and 16 new ascendency choices, including a shapeshifting ranger. New animations for character models, especially for melee, and environmental & engine tweaks.

I say that above because my god there will be bugs and shit that doesn't work. Hell legaue to league the things that happen are wild. Look at the live updates for 3.20 and multiply that by a factor of 20 or more. They will need a 6 month beta or more for 4.0 release.

Honestly if there was a separate realm for an entire year in beta, I wouldnt be shocked. I think the development scope is beyond them, and I'm not trying to be mean. I've just played for a decade and seen what happens quarterly. It's often quite messy.

Idk man. Poe 4.0 new skill gem system = no need to use weapon swap anymore. Its a QoL change but not fundemental way how to approach the game.

It's even bigger than that. If you have a 6L armor piece now, the difference of an upgrade you would want to 6L or buy it, compared to if you just looked at the affixes is an insane gearing shift.

Have the skills be the source of links and totally gear independent is one of the largest changes to the game.

Keeping the old campaign seems a mistake to me. Imagine if you could complete the older campaign faster than the new one? It also devalues the "POE 2" factor because it shows that it's an additional patched content on-top to the existing base game.
4.0 might have a shiny new campaign to make its trailers look good but it will live or die on that gem system. It's the only part of the expansion I know for a fact is so important it would have been in Path of Exile 2 even were it an entirely new game.

It is as brilliant an addition to the ARPG genre as anything else GGG have done, refining their original mix of FFVII materia linking+Sacred 2 skill gem drops to allow creative combinations that both easier to achieve and easier to balance than the inspired but undercooked item socket system. Undercooked because they never found a way to make it work with a core tenet of ARPGs: always be upgrading. They wanted players to be equipping what they found, not clinging to gear based on tuned socket specifics early on.

This is why Ruthless, or partly so.

By tying support sockets to the skill itself they, like nature, found a way.

If only they'd found a way to do it that didn't involve dealing with all of PoE's baggage and missteps along the way. I do not envy the devs who have to do that. It'll make what Avatar had to do to make Sigourney Weaver look like a young blue alien seem like a simple recolour.

The name says it all.
Hoping the leveling experience is improved.
