The Easiest of the Easy Beginner Build Guides [1.1 SotV UPDATED]
What do you guys think about grabbing the Steel Skin node in end game? I'm up to level 75 now, and I have some life nodes I could grab. I'm wondering if it makes more sense to grab the life or head up to Steel Skin - three points to grab 30% armor seems attractive.

I've been enjoying this build greatly, nice work.
I am having trouble with understanding int. It looks like you pick up one +30 int node on the way by, then later on as you reach for Static blows you cross a few more. I'm hitting requirements issues, for example, I'm short for lightning warp and conductivity at the moment. Is this something to address with gear? Is it worth racing for those far nodes for this reason? |

I have been following lightning arrow build and I am now at 52lvl. I have been struggling for once in a while and now it's again getting difficult. I am now supposed to start the imperial gardens (act 3, cruel) and there it's getting really tough. I know that my problems are gear related, but I would like to have a small advice about updating the gear economically. I am new to the game and this is only my second character at over 50 lvl, so the budget is limited. I already got a nice bow for free in the game, but my other equipment needs an upgrade as well.
Spoiler
I use only frenzy and lightning arrow. The other gems are there just for leveling up. My frenzy DPS is 577 and LA 412. My resistances are low (1, 33, 36, -20). That might be a problem. Armour is approx. 1290. Passive skill tree:

Next thing will be taking the +12 resistances. I have 2 gemcutters prisms, 2 orbs of regret, 5 chaos orbs, 7 orbs of scouring and 9 orbs of alchemy. I also have some low level uniques, but I dont know if they are worth something

" Your priority should be to increase/cap your resists by getting gear with multiple resist mods. Chest, necklace, either or both rings, belt and maybe gloves should be upgraded. I presume you're on standard so you should be able to buy them at fairly cheap prices (about 1c each? )- use shop indexers like poe.xyz.is to filter items to your needs: filter by mods like (Total Elemental Resistance) and (+ Maximum Life), your current level, desired sockets/links and so on. You might want to push your resistances past the cap (75%) when upgrading gear because you will lose another 40% to all resistances once you enter Merciless difficulty. Gem-wise I would do away with all the unused gems that are just there for exp- instead a few defensive/healing gems would be really useful. Enduring Cry (quest reward), Decoy Totem (very early quest reward from a marauder/templar/scion alt), as well as Life Gain on Hit and/or Life Leech (buy) to support your damage skills are recommended. |

As much as I like this build, I find that the dps is rather lacking.
That said, I have learnt alot from the guide. This was my 2nd character after the first being a failed self build witch(used lots of regrets to rebuild that into a useful summoner now). I have since tried ZiggyD's marauder and ek scion, ek scion has since become my main, incredible survivability and decent dps - 10k with self buff auras. Back to this ranger(level 75), my single target dps is decent, can get up to 4.2k+ with frenzy, the lightning arrow though coupled with life gain on hit/life leech, can be good with survivability but it takes a long time to kill things. I am using a 276dps bow, with 5 link(chest armour) lightning arrow setup. Dps(with 6 frenzy charges) is 4.2k (frenzy), 600 (lightning arrow with chain), 1.1k(lightning arrow with pierce). About 4k health, and max resists.

I like this ranger very much, but after trying the ek scion build, it just pales in comparison, survivability(face tank almost everything), damage-wise. Maybe I'm doing something wrong somewhere, and I do not know how to maximise the dps. Getting a better than 280 dps bow is expensive and I don't see the dps go up by much more. (Edit: I probably should not sound so harsh on the build, because as a starting build, it is awesome and I certainly felt strong while levelling up, and didn't die much at all even with my not-so-careful style of play. And as OP has said, this is good for new players to experience the game. I also did not invest that much into my gears.) Last edited by mcalavera#0085 on Feb 20, 2014, 3:03:52 AM

Hiho Ranger masters :D
i have a little question about this built. Why do you use "Resolute Technique"? Based on other grindgames i would think, that critical strike is a good thing to have but with resolute technique you waive it. Could somebody explain the benefit of resolute technique to me please. thanks guys |

" 1. I would link Lightning Arrow with LMP, Chain and Weapon Elemental Dmg [it feels like the strongest combo for me] (btw. I don't like pierce gem somehow, anyways I'm using Projectile Weakness curse). 2. If you're about to use split arrow - dont link it with LMP. 3. You're loosing a lot on your chest piece - try to look for something like double resistances 4L armor " In those tanky builds, we don't pick Critical multipliers/+crit chance nodes, the only +crit you can get is from items - and that's not enough. It's survival build, if you would pick %crit/crit multiplier nodes, you'll have to drop the survival thing, and pick up dmg. In Ziggyd's builds posted here it's about survival :) And now a question from me, as I got confused. In your video about LA Ranger there's a build for her that has beginning like this one: But here, in the forum thread for LA Ranger there's So here's my question - which one offers more DMG ? I think the RoA benefits more from Ballistic Mastery, as LA benefits more from Heavy Draw - am I right ? |

Currently working from this guide level 30 at the moment and having terrible mana issues, does the build pick something up later that helps with this, doesn't help I have a terrible bow atm so I need to fire more than I should.

I have made quite large upgrade since the last post. Thank you blueblacklogcake and adote for your help. I am currently starting Act 2 Merciless and I just got my resistances capped with new rings and amulet. Chaos resistance is still -52 % though :/
Current gear:
Spoiler
I paid for the rings and amulet 5 chaos orbs. The guy said that it was a cheap price, but I really don't have any idea. At least he helped a lot with my lightning resistance problem. It was only 12 % and doing chamber of since was a pain due to bone wardens and skeleton archers with lightning arrows. I also upgraded my helmet and boots for 2 chaos and 1 fusing. I am currently at 61lvl and the boots are 62lvl so they are here:
Spoiler
The chest is also new. I bought the chest, life leech gem and life gain on hit gems for 23 orb of chances and one blessed orb. Ah and also cast when damage taken for 3 chaos orbs. The negative side of this is that I don't have any chaos orbs left so the next upgrade will be difficult. I hope I can reach at least The Docks with this gear, because I've understood that that's a decent place for farming and getting more currency. Do you think I have wasted my orbs? |

I have a LA Ranger at Level 76 and I never read this guide until now.
My first thought upon reviewing it is there are a lot of wasted passive skill points to run over to the left of the screen to grab Blood Magic (readily available in gems and other gear) and Resolute Technique (give up crit chance and crit damage because you are too lazy/busy wasting skill points/don't understand it???). Resolute Technique relieves the player of worrying about accuracy to give up the chance for critical hits doing double, triple, or higher damage from a single hit. In my case my Ranger has 92% accuracy, so I miss 8% of the time. But I also have a raw crit (I assume this is global crit) of 10.4% and a crit damage multiplier of 318%. So according to this guide, to be able to hit 8% more of the time, I should give up my 10.4% chance to do triple damage??? Does anyone out there agree with this idea now??? And I have only used 3 skill points on accuracy, all the rest comes from gear and it isn't hard to get lots of accuracy on gear at higher levels. From Resolute Technique the author then wastes 9 skill points (yes 9 points) to run up to the top of the skill tree to get Static Blows. Is it worth 9 Points??? It must be really OP! Let's see what wasting 9 skill points gets us -- 20% incresed shock duration and another 20% chance to shock. Well that sounds really good except why waste 9 skill points running to the top of the skill tree to grab those skills easily replaced by a quality Lightning Arrow Gem (20% quality gives 30% increased shock duration) and the Conductivity Curse - Curses all targets in an area, making them less resistant to lightning damage and giving lightning damage a chance to shock. So to sum up my problems with this "easy build" - Blood Magic passive is MEH, Resolute Technique is a total waste of skill points, and you must be kidding to waste 9 skill points just to get to Static Blows. I think the author should rethink this guide as it may be "easy" but it certainly isn't efficient. |
