Gems and runes have a very different meaning in D2 than in D3. In D3 they give you statpoints directly, instead of +50 poison damage and so on.

The outside maps (we have seen so far) are smaller.
The underground ones, hell no.

As I said... Runes were in D2 as well... Their purpose wasn't all that much different. It's only due the gameplay mechanics which were simplified why they have bigger impact on your character. (since you can't really touch into your build on any other means.)

Are you talking about runes vs runes now? Those are entirely different.

And yeah, runes and gems from D2 are similar to D3's gems, but they were something you never really used in good armor at all. D3's gems will be usable on all types of armor, and you'll want to use them to customise your char the way you see fit.

Just brought up an example but you are free to correct me. The opportunity was given to you in D2 with a lot of different ones as well. The reason why you haven't used them is because there's been better ones.

In D3 you don't have a choice. Still doesn't sound like the ultimate freedom for me.

Of how you customize your character's build of course as runes and gems were and integral part of that but not the only ones.

I'm not sure what you mean now.
You can put gems on your gear in whatever way you like, thus customising your character. (in D3)

All stat points you ever used was either dex for max block and vitality or energy if you're playing energy shield build. Glad they're gone.

How i see it, even thought that PoE looks very complicated, there are only couple of really viable builds. Say you're going for 2h sword build... ofc you'll want +2 handed dmg and maybe armor with life, maybe OP AoE to go with it, and that's it.
