Male / Female options with classes?

This has been suggested multiple times throughout the beta, and Chris once mentioned that it would take around $250,000 in development cost (paying for thousands of man-hours of work) to make new models and animations for each class. The devs have said it's something they might add later, but the cost and time is too much right now.

What if, instead of using new models you sever the link between class and character model? You could pick a class, then a character model (for example a templar with the Witch model). They'd simply get the templar startingpoint and stats in the passive skill tree.

No new models/clothes needed as all classes can basically wear anything they have the stats for anyway.. very cheap and shouldn't be too hard to implement either and you'd be making even more people happy :)

That would be a good option if it was taken before they started making the game, right now I think it would be confusing and ugly, since the already existing models are established characters.

Well no one -has- to switch. Perhaps one could unlock this option through the shop instead and apply it to a character instead of selecting it when you make the character? It's just an appearance afterall.

Plus open beta means a fresh start for everyone.
I had this exact same thought. I figured it would cost a nice chunk of money, but I had no idea it would be like 250k or so. That's crazy!
Sometimes I wonder why developers make decisions to do things based upon 20 people pushing a trollery through the forums about wanting girl rauders and man rangers and that they aren't being catered to.
