as for for melee. eh slightly less useful.
But you can do everything you mentioned without shift. Put your skill on anything but left click, and don't use shift. Watch how it works the exact same.
That's what I don't understand. When you use a skill that ISN'T on left click, it AUTOMATICALLY STOPS YOU. It's like this in every game pretty much. But yet the most common way to play is make it so that's not automatic? Make it so you have to use 2 keys for your main attack? Boggles the hell out of me.
I feel like I'm seriously missing something.
Why are you assuming left click is your main attack? You can set your attacks to any other key. No one uses left click for skills unless they have too many skills and are forced to.
This. Thank you, finally some sense. See, now why wouldn't you use left click as your main attack from the start? Why not? Because it's unnecessary, that's why. Glad to see some people understand, even if they don't realize it.
That's not to say you can't play with whatever key bindings you want, I'm just saying when discussing this topic, I don't think anybody could argue hitting 2 keys for 1 attack is ideal, unless somehow necessary, which is what I'm trying to find out. Not just this game, any game.

There are quite a few attacks (such as cleave/groundslam) with which it is possible to hit enemies that are outside of your melee range. However, the default behaviour for these attacks is to move your character into melee range and then perform the attack. Shift-clicking allows you to perform these attacks without moving your character. This means that you can shift-click to attack at the maximum range of your skill, move away, shift-click to attack again, move etc, allowing you to kill enemies with these melee attacks while never entering the melee range of the enemy, and so never getting hit.
There are also other uses, such as with lightning strike. Using shift-click, you can be standing half a screen away, and the middle projectile will travel exactly to where you click, allowing accurate range dps with this skill without moving to the enemy.
The are undoubtedly other tricks, but these are two situations that I use it in.
Aha! See, I don't play melee ever, so maybe this is why. Thanks for the post. Finally some sense!
But at the same time, I bet the majority of players use left click + shift for their main attack. I talked to people in D3, and this was the case. So whatever their most used skill was, they'd put that on left click, and do shift constantly. Blew my mind to hear people play like that.

It's just more comfortable to be holding down only your index finger for long periods of time when moving around and fighting, plus it's muscle memory to just point and click. That's my reason for still using spacebar as my standstill key at least. Oh and the missing skillslot from binding move only, cause I need all I can get on my 5 enduring cries duelist.

Which is exactly why I use my 1 key as main attack. It's so much easier to do 11111 (or hold it) than to do left click + shift constantly. SO much easier.

I take it you never played d1 or 2 then?
and his explanation was what i couldnt be bothered typing. As the examples he gave are hardly melee attacks.

Because if you happened to have a mob targeted and it moves out of range you will automatically move into range (this can be fatal), and holding shift absolutely prevents that from happening. Not only on left click but any skill slot and is why I hold shift when attacking.

well I have Flasks on my 1 key so that wouldnt be very useful.
oh wait .. that "Unnecessary amount of flask slots" thread from a while ago is yours too? http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/142282
between that thread and this one it appears your aim is trying to make this game easier to play. Let me guess, to remove confusion you have ended up with a single attack (bound to the 1 key) and a single Flask (bound to the 2 key)?

This may just be me but I find that coordinating my two hands into aiming at a target and pressing the attack button at the same time to be slightly (slight as slight can be) harder than using just the mouse (shift can be pressed slightly ahead of time). I tend to use middle or right mouse for most attacks but for anything shorter range, left mouse + shift usually provides more utility. Also it's habit from Diablo 2 of couse ;)

Old habit from many games of this type. I always shift for positioning, whether ranged or melee. Just feels natural.
Ranged = left click move only + shift & keyboard attacks
Melee = left click move & attack + shift for positioning

No. the reason people don't use left click for attacks is that it can get you killed.
If you have an attack as left click and you try to run away sometimes it will attack instead of run. That is why most people set left click as move only.
What ever you're talking about makes no sense. Maybe you don't understand that any skill set to left click will always be combined with move. And if that's the issue, then well use a different key!!!!
