[Guide] How to upgrade your Atlas (with pictures)

Edit:- ZiggyD has recently also come out with a video guide on this - https://youtu.be/yWCp0wFjx2M

I'm seeing a lot of confusion about how to upgrade your Atlas, with some of us running hundreds of maps and not successfully moving the quest along. The game doesn't really provide that clear of instructions on how to go about it, so I figured i would post a quick guide.

Step 1: Complete maps in the four corner quadrants of your Atlas until you get influence.

The four corner quadrants are the areas with a green checkmark. Do them until you see influence, like in my bottom left quadrant in the screnshot. You will know it is influenced when the Atlas area changes color (red, green, etc..).

Step 2: Do random maps that are inside of the influenced quadrant.

To progress the quest you now must do maps inside the influenced quadrant. You need to do 3 maps where your Elderslayer is present, which are random. This means you can not spam the same map over and over, but instead must mix up which you do (for example, mine were in Park -> Toxic Sewers -> Moon Temple). There will be special abilities and mobs present, with the Elderslayer talking randomly, if you are in one where he is present. Find him successfully in 3 maps and you will move on to the next step.

Step 3: Talk to Officer Kirac.

After completing the 3 maps the Elderslayer is in, you must now talk to Officer Kirac in your hideout to progress the quest. After speaking with him you should have a Citadel on your Atlas, shown below.

Now on to the next step...

Step 4: Talk to Zana.

Now talk to Zana, and you should see a new option to "Travel to x Citadel", shown above. Clicking this option opens up new portals to a map from the influenced quadrant, which you will clear like a normal map. After killing the final boss, a new portal will open, shown below.

Go through it.

Step 5: Kill the Elderslayer.

You will now be in an arena, simply kill the Elderslayer to progress.

Step 6: Loot the Watchstone.

Pretty self-explanatory.

Step 7: Socket the Watchstone.

Congrats, you've successfully upgraded a section of your atlas! Now on to the final step...

Step 8: Repeat.

Now go do the other corners.

Hopefully someone found this at least a little helpful, I know I was about to tear my hair out running white maps thinking something would simply trigger. I guess it helps to have quest objectives turned on when new Atlas reworks come out...

I have 4 stones and ran like 50 maps so far on corner regions and not single encounter
as soon as i turned on objectives things went better. i misread one area and was running wrong maps.
First 4 stone were easy since they pretty much appeared on every map i did but now i havent seen them anymore.

this is where i am at. i completed all 4 citadels and now each of the quests state search different regions. have tried running maps in the middle and in the corners with nothing happening. upgrading the corners also didnt cause the actual map levels to change, only change on the map. the maps still drop at original level. so at this point im basically just farming cassia..

solution, i had to restart client. once i upgraded the map section, the maps were still dropping at their original tier. this is why i couldnt get them to spawn again. once i restarted client. upgraded tier map dropped, ran it and then sure enough the mission came through. this time im going to save the stones until i have all 4, then upgrade all and restart client again, repeat.
You don't need to run the four corners.

If you mouse over the watchstone holder boxes on the left, it will tell you what level the watchstone holder thing needs to be at for the particular exile to spawn there. Then you just run maps in that zone with that many watchstones socketed and he'll show up eventually.

Or you can just make sure every zone has the right number of watchstones socketed, then every map you run has a chance to spawn an exile.

Oh hey, something actually useful.

I thought it would end up being

"(1) - go find Alva
(2) - jump in the Vaal Wayback Machine
(3) - go back in time to [league of your choice]
(4) - have a t16 corrupted map of the league prior to that league, in your sweaty little hand
(5) - ???
(6) - Profit"

Here's a picture. This is what you want to pay attention to when gathering watchstones. As you gather more, it requires higher levels of the watchstone tower. In this picture i have one watchstone socketed so i can target the green one next.

So as per the GGG norm this is just more content for the no-lifers. It's early Monday (12:55 am EST) < 2½ days since the league started and players are discussing endgame goals like it's a no-brainer walk in the park while the majority of filthy casuals haven't finished the 10 acts yet. And this is the Christmas season no less so no-lifing PoE really shouldn't be the norm. Sad, very sad that's all you have going for you.  :(
"You've got to grind, grind, grind at that grindstone..."
Necessity may be the mother of invention, but poor QoP in PoE is the father of frustration.
