Game of thrones thread go! [ S8 ]

Spoiler
Like once more alright the people even defending the tactics are beyond help right here alright

The dorathaki are considered to be one of the most powerful army in the world the only people who even beat them are the unsullied and they're allies now so the plan was to give them enchanted fire weapons and pretty much push through / charge through the undead in the middle of the darkness.

Now Dorathaki are 1/2 of her Jon's and dannys forces and just like that they were wiped out in a heartbeat so you basically 1/2 of your forces through lets say 100,000+++ Undead that swarm through the place like zergling's.

The writer who pretty much wrote this needs to be punched in the nose straight up like I can deal with NK being gone just like that but I can't deal the amount of stupidity in warfare no commander would just straight up do that.

Spoiler
So basically 3/4 of Jon's and danny's forces are obliterated now you can basically just cheat with the dragons vs Cercei but once more you got plot armor in the show and they're probably going to die in stupid ways in terms of the dragons.

Spoiler
Hell I don't even mind Arya doing the teleport thing shes considered to be the perfect assassin after all

Well, that last episode was pretty anti-climatic, not gonna lie.

I dont have a problem with it ending in a way I didn't imagine way and still be cool.

Nah, we get "wtf is this shit" ending. Yeas of buildup and stand-offs for that? Seriously?

I need someone to make me a vid of every single Jon Snow/NK stare down until the last one, and then have that "GOTTEM!" guy with the laugh, too, when he gets stabbed by super girl.

GOTTEM!!!!
It's like there's not a new episode coming out in a few days, lol.
That's all interesting stuff (and awfully arrogant of Wagner). Can't say I read it carefully, but good for those who do want to get that detailed.

Sometimes say that it'd be great to watch GoT on a proper big screen. So much is lost on the small, sound included. Guess some people have great home setups. The darkness didn't bug me, it seemed fine for a wintry night, and fit, but for sure can see it makes sense to find it all way too murky.

Though it is pretty funny to think early 19th century darkness rendering techniques were far superior

The dimming thing is a shame, why not just put some kind of cover over the creen if your kid's prone to seizures?

Dunno, is that possible?

Not cynical to think it drives bluray sales. This stuff is big money.

Goddamn I love Goya. His mastery of darkness and light is unsurpassed imo, and I love how Frazetta calls it magic and power. It might seem off-topic, but without Goya, there'd be no Frazetta. No Frazetta, no distinct image of early swords-and-sorcery as pulp (as opposed to, say, the early art for Tolkien, which was a lot more ethereal). No pulp fantasy imagery, no Game of Thrones.

Yes, he's a master. None of it's off-topic.

First of all, we have to say that -despite the dark fame of these paintings- not all them were gloomy or terrible. It is true that today almost everybody associates the "black paintings" to "Saturn devouring his son" or to the ruthless "Duel with cudgels", but in the set we found pieces in which the irony flock any vestige of horror -"Two women and a man"- or even the beautiful figure of the "Leocadia", elegant and serene despite of her mourning. In addition, the rooms, with abundant windows opened to the Madrilenian countryside, had to receive an important amount of sunlight, so the Quinta must have been far from being the dark place that many historians seem to suggest.

They have been removed from the villa of the deaf, but this site form which that paragraph came, has a virtual render of the arrangement.

Frazetta, can see that. Not a huge fan here, of his stuff while appreciating the importance of it to fantasy but this one -

yass.

Yet,

Orlando Furioso, the immensely talented Dore at work there.

Just one example; all those Vernes and Welles' had some really fantastical illustrations. Furioso has one of a chained woman, a monster, and a knight that is right out of Frazetta's pulpy fantasies.

Wonder about tracing the pulpy line back with more connecting points, surely is might go back to this?

Like I'm no field commander sure but holy fucking shit this is some of the most dumbest tactics I've ever seen in a war god dam.

You know nothing I_NO.

It was a great episode except it was too dark. And now that the NK (not part of the books) is out of the way, we can revisit all of those characters we love and hate for three more episodes.

- Stay inside the castle not outside if attacked!

- Artillery stays inside the castle! Or at least behind that fire ring. Not scattered in between the main army body.

- Light cavalry charges into darkness - stupid! (light cavalry never charged anyways. It's used for recon, ambush, encirclement, quick pushes from the sides or to finish noff an already destabilized area) Furthermore they planned to charge into the darkness without flaming swords (those were an unexpected gift from Melisandre ex machina) so the original plan of charging into the darkness without any light was even dumber!

- No or extremely few ground defenses/obstacles except for that little fire ring. There was enough time to build those. About that Ring of fire: placing this obstacle between the main body of the army and the stronghold meant that a retreat would have to go through it, causing a choke point.

- Dragons used in the most stupid way instead of supporting the army staying relatively close to Bran they fly around in the mist or fog or clouds or whatever that is. That was the plan anyways, to lure the NK to bran, so stay close or hide in the vicinity or support your people while waiting for an opportunity.

- The Night King has a dragon but no aerial defenses were built!

- Hiding in a crypt with...uuuhh....potential undeads in the tombs - stupid (at least clear the tombs first)!

- Flanks not protected! why so sure enemy comes from front?

- How come the walls were not armed with archers at all times? How come they have nothing to pour down from the walls onto the undead?

I could go on....

The winterfell forces have/had several seasoned war veterans in their ranks and what they do is brain amputated nonsense...

another article about it: https://www.wired.com/story/game-of-thrones-winterfell-battle-tactical-analysis/

If drama just ensues due to incredibly stupid and unrealistic behavior I couldn't care less about whatever happens in the movie. At least keep the pseudo realism to a bearable minimum.

I haven't seen the game of thrones yet, as I'm waiting for the whole season to come out and then the discs on BR. But most of the reviews I've heard and people I've talked to said the episode was great(except for the darkness). I think the people that will be disappointed is those whom have knowledge about tactical warfare(such as yourself), which is probably only like 5% of the viewers. Most people just want to be entertained. I'm not saying you are wrong, just saying that very viewers care about the things you mentioned.....

Thank about how many times you watch an action drama, where the guns never run out of bullets? Or how the good guys in gun battles almost ALWAYS seem to escape death. Many unrealistic situations and stupid decision making, but it never diminishes the ratings at all, as people just want to be entertained.
I don't begrudge the North their bad tactics. Not a one of them is a seasoned war veteran except for maybe Royce. The rest are green, young diplomats or individual fighters.

But it wasn't all bad tactics. Certainly the Dothraki running off wasn't planned, and I even thought the show explained that well with Jorah being pushed along and inaudibly yelling at them to stop.

The flank thing is pretty well explained -- they know that the enemies are mindless zombies coming from the north. Therefore, guard from the north, and indeed that's where they were. Eventually they spilled around to the sides, but that wasn't an instance of bad planning.

The siege weapons were badly used, but they're also not particularly useful at attacking infantry. They got a few shots off and did some damage, and that's really the most they could have ever hoped for unless they did something crazy like build them behind the town and fire over top of it (and risk all sorts of accidental fire).

Overall... eh. Even with good tactics, even with perfect execution, they were hosed regardless. It was the Night King's fight to lose.
I've rewatched this third episode a couple of times and would like to address some of the issues people have brought up. For one, the living forces couldn't all fit inside Winterfell, there were just too many damn people to fit inside the walls. As for the Dothraki, their known strength is in their combat abilities from being mounted on a horse and they're basically like the Marines of the living army. First to fight, first to die. Having them not attack like they did would be like taking their greatest strength away from them.

As for the dragons, they were meant to stay far enough from Bran to lure the Night King into the gods wood. Those plans were scrapped when Dany decided to jump into the fray when the Dothraki were defeated.

Arya didn't "teleport" either, she ran right past one of the white walkers on her approach. It's likely she used some stealth technique she learned from the faceless men. I mean, if they can use a form of magic to wear other peoples faces is it really a stretch to say they also have ways to make themselves less noticeable? In PoE terms, she used Phase Run. :P

I feel like a lot of people are just upset the army of the dead were defeated so "easily", but let's face it they've been building up Cersei as the big bad for the entire series. It's only fitting that "Game of Thrones" ends with them actually fighting for the throne.

Eh, these are just my drunken Saturday evening thoughts after an extremely long week with little sleep. Take it or leave it. ♥

They definitely could have done a much better job showing that, though. A wider shot of the white walkers noticing (too late) that something is moving past them, or a previous scene of Arya using super stealth speed would have been sufficient.

It looks like teleportion. I'm sure it wasn't intended to be teleportation, but the crime is that it looks like it.

Yeah I'll give you that one. All we got was a scene of a white walkers hair moving and then he turns to look. :)

I like how it happened in the exact place that Bran gave Arya that cat's paw dagger though.
