Tencent has Invested in Grinding Gear Games

GGG Patch Notes: "Fixed an unwanted interaction where players had fun playing the game"
The jaws of EA's long-lost brother closes in on GGG. I'm worried, I invested so much time and resources into this game to see it become great, only to find itself in the clutches of a massive company that could tell the devs to destroy their reputation at a moment's notice. They are a large publisher and, just like the aforementioned EA, have profits to consider. Tencent invested a lot of money into Grinding Gear Games, they expect a valuable return for it.

I'd really hate to see this game and its studio fall apart. There's so few ARPGs out there that understand what it means to make a summoner build. Grim Dawn is just not the same which is ironic considering the D2 devs working in Crate, and I don't think Wolcen comes close (I don't have it, so apologies if it does).
PoE players: Our game has a wide diversity of builds.

Also PoE players: The [league mechanic] doesn't need to be nerfed, you just need to play a [current meta] build!

MFers found strength in their Afflictions. They became reliant on them. I am not so foolish.

You can do things like that so both the investor (participation in profits) and company founder (in control) have their interest secured as they see fit.

We are going in circles here. I fundamentally disagree with your ascertains.

Let's take a long term approach to this. Bookmark this post. In two years time, if things turn out the way you think they will, and GGG is still running with minimal to no interference from Tencent, I will give you a mirror and start a public thread congratulating Chris Wilson on being "THE ONE" who beat the long odds. And I will be happy to do so, since I enjoy playing PoE quite a lot.

If I am right, well, the game will have gone to sh*t and I certainly won't want anything from you in return, other than the satisfaction me me saying "I told you so."

Deal?

Deal man, I stand by my words I just don't believe GGG would give up control over something they invested so much time into. Most likely they want to continue their vision and carve the path for their game just as before.

That being said I won't take mirror from you even if I'm right, I still want to find it myself 6 years and no luck so far :)

You know what GGG? This kind of post should be skipped.

It seems you don't know your players... 14 year old kids can't understand whats happening here.

Why post it anyway? So many "dreams" and "speculation" here, all of them by those 15 year old kids. As they understnad anything about market, company, loyalts, rights, money, rules, etc.

This kind of info should just not be advised. It's your own business and you're doing what you think it's better for the game. Salt kids are just salt kids, no worry about.

I just googled tencent, it's the 5th biggest company in the world on internet, after google, facebook and something else. Market value around ~ 190 bi USD.

I can't see any reason why this should be bad to the game, specially if you guys still the developers without any interference from the china company.

Best of lucK!!!

Tencent will no doubt apply their pay-to-win strategy in Chinese server, but luckily these strategy will unlikely reach international server, because 1) The only market tencent really care to make money is Chinese market, and 2) Tencent know how to extract money out of user, but not how to make a innovative game that is fun. So they need GGG to operate independently to generate all the good ideas, so that they can grab it and combine it with their money extracting method to get more money from chinese market.

The only thing that remain in question is, will Tencent demand GGG to block international server from Chinese users?
Independently-run company? You sold majority stakes in GGG and you talk about independence. Dream on.

Finally not a 12 year old boy here. Nice post. :)

That looks like entrance into Act 11 will be cost real life money.
I guess when duty calls and and Tencent wants something for the Chinese version , you will prioritize them because they are investing. Which in my opinion will affect the work over the international version. For example you are working on the next league and they call with a demand, you will leave the new league work for them because you are short on staff. And this will be 5 months Legacy league all over again...
It is a good thing, but also not that great.
Gongratz GGG.
