Tencent has Invested in Grinding Gear Games

Very unhappy news.

mean VIP mod is comeing
My friend sends:

"Tencent: Haha you are captured; stupid beeeast!"
My first impression is not positive at all. You deserve the money, thats right.

Anyway, here's my reason to be pessimistic: GGG imho was so damn good because they did not flood the shop with "pay to win" items. It is now only a matter of time that we will find items in shop with a 'ressourection without loosing xp' or 'ascend without doing the damn lab' ... Damit, even if it might be not tomorrow, this is a sad day and for me personaly a reason not to support anymore :(

As for a not-kneejerk reaction, eh...we'll see how it actually goes.
Hard to feel optimistic about this one, and i'll prolly think twice before supporting again in the future, but until some real alarming stuff starts happening, i suppose all's good.
And if it never does then hey, more power to optimism.

Genuinely hoping that this move was worth it and it'll work out for both GGG and PoE in the end.

You can do things like that so both the investor (participation in profits) and company founder (in control) have their interest secured as they see fit.

We are going in circles here. I fundamentally disagree with your talking-points.

Let's take a long term approach to this. Bookmark this post. In two years time, if things turn out the way you think they will, and GGG is still running with minimal to no interference from Tencent, I will give you a mirror and start a public thread congratulating Chris Wilson on being "THE ONE" who beat the long odds. And I will be happy to do so, since I enjoy playing PoE quite a lot.

If I am right, well, the game will have gone to sh*t and I certainly won't want anything from you in return, other than the satisfaction me me saying "I told you so."

Deal?

This'd be funny if it weren't sad.

Well guess you don't need to sell Supporter packs anymore, and I probably won't be buying any.

We can all pray this turns out okay like Digital Extremes and Warframe, but then again they were bought by a Chinese agricultural company (who actually kept their promise of non-interference) not Tencent.

Warframe? Warframe is pay to win game, if you did not notice, that is not something I would classify as "ok"

A great topic and insight by GGG as always, but I honestly can't stand behind this.

I do trust GGG to know what is best for them, but being a law-student I also know that whoever "owns" something will *always* rule it.

has acquired a majority stake in Grinding Gear Games

So yeah, I truly hope nothing changes and the people at GGG get to feel that they are on more stable economic ground than a f2p-platform based on generosity

But I dread the day GGG has a disagreement with their owners, because that's the day GGG will for once not make the right decision for it will be denied them.

worst decision of all time right here

Agreed. They will weasel their way into every part of PoE eventually. Even just the idea of making investors money will affect the decision making.

Would be a shame to see an independent developer become diluted by a big corporation.

Take the longer road and have a game just the way you and players want it. Sell a 40% stake if they are so interested, not a majority steak that makes them your boss.
Will Path of Exile become Pay to Win?
No. We will not make any changes to its monetisation on our international servers.

Path of Exile ALREADY PAY TO WIN.

and was light (Garena die) and will be darkness...
