LOL so people in your party can steal your loot?

OP is troll guys. Don't feed it
Message me in game @SleepyHarvester
loot belongs to the player who picks it up.

and even if you switch your loot allocation to "permanent", it just locks the loot assigned to you for 5 minutes before it's free for all again.

age and treachery will triumph over youth and skill!
Not sure why people are calling him a troll.

I always play with Perm Alloc on, and it regularly happens in parties that loot either doesn't get allocated, or gets allocated to multiple people. I'm not just talking about white bases, it happens to currency as well.

Best guess by one of my guildies, whom I party with, is that if loot drops off-screen (or too far offscreen, perhaps), then it can drop un-allocated and hence essentially becomes free-for-all.

This happens if you kill things offscreen, probably even out of xp range.
E.g. vaal/sparks that stays for a long time while the party is running out of xp-range (2.5 screens if iam not totally wrong). So the allocation wont find a player and just gives it up for everyone.

according to my experience it also applies to currency dropping from breakables like vases.

Right, that's confirmed then. In my case it's typically KB projectiles shooting ahead of the group, so we actually run into the un-allocated loot a short while later (rather than finding it when backtracking, as in your example scenario). Is really confusing at times.

Anyway, I'm just saying that's what could have happened in the OP's scenario as well.

Whether this can happen is based on your party's loot allocation settings. The default mode is short allocation - when desirable items drop, only one player (chosen at random) is allowed to pick them up for a few seconds, then they become available to pick up for everyone in the party. There is also permanent allocation, or free for all. As party leader you can change the loot allocation setting from the party screen, and you can also set your default in UI options.

(Random side note: GGG really like free for all, since they feel like stealing loot is part of the fun of this sort of game. The other modes exist because many players don't share that view.)

Just came here to say that default setting is Permanent, and not Short - it was changed by GGG after a long debate about Free for All and that kind of thing. :V Plus what 好的男 said - even with Perma, off-screening causes loot to not be allocated to anyone.

Other than that - yeah, OP is trolling, or is incredibly ignorant, for someone who critiques so much. Both are, sadly, possible. :V
Real knowledge is to know the extent of one's ignorance.
Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge.

Is the default setting stored in account or client settings? I've installed PoE on three or four computers since ascension and all have short as the default setting. I originally started playing in open beta though, so if it's stored in my account it may come from that time.

it's stored in a file at ur windows profile
default is C:\Users\<YOUR_USER>\Documents\My Games\Path of Exile ,
there is file "production_Config.ini"
So if u wanna keep ur settings just backup that file - if u want to reinstall the game or play on any other system.

in that file, Allocation Settings are:
default_loot_allocation=1 (=perm)
