Is lightning coil a good chest for this build?

" Although dual curse with Heretic's Veil is great, it does incur 2 major downsides: 1) You lose life from your helmet slot because Heretic's Veil has no life; 2) You either A - spend a small fortune on a +1 curse amulet or B - invest 7 passive points to travel up to and take Whispers of Doom (or 6-points if you drop the curse effectiveness nodes and take the worthless curse cast speed node instead) or C - lose out on even more life/survivability using Doedre's Damning or Windscream Option A is by far the best if you can afford it. Even so, all the +1 curse amulets on POE don't have the stats I'd want so if you want Option A and have lots of wealth, maybe roll your own. I started looking into the roll your own option... at first blush it looks like you've got about a 1/100 chance or so of rolling +1 curse on an amulet. On the bright side, decent amulets with high life and mana regen plus maybe one resist run about 1 chaos or so each. Vaal orbs go for just under 2 chaos each. So to have a 50-50 chance of crafting an amulet should take something like 70 attempts or roughly 3ex. Option B is the one I'm using ATM. Option C is untenable in my opinion due to loss of survavability. ========== Even though you do lose life by equipping HV, I think it's worth it. " Forgive me for being pedantic here, but... Lightning Coil is certainly not good for every build... but for this build, it's good if you're simply worried about mitigating incoming physical damage. For builds focusing on life or on armor (and probably in some other cases as well), Lightning Coil won't be your best defensive option, even against incoming physical damage. It gets complicated, though, so often you'd need to run an Effective Life calculation to be sure. And even so, it's murky because other considerations come into play - other damage types, possible loss of DPS, etc. ====== Back to this build... If you equip Lightning Coil in this build, incoming physical damage is reduced, but your DPS goes down; moreover, you'll need to cope with the -60% lightning resist intrinsic to LC and, LC's physical damage conversion doesn't help against other damage types (chaos, elemental, etc.). Carcass Jack's increased AOE radius (probably causes Ice Trap explosions to sometimes/always overlap for 2x or more damage) and - to a much lesser extent - increased Area Damage are a form of defense; if stuff dies faster, stuff does less damage. ======= So it's a toss up for me. I went with Carcass Jack hoping to kill stuff before it kills me; but to improve defense, I went with Heretic's Veil + temporal chains and enfeeble; for curse immune maps I'll equip an evasion helmet and go with Anger + HoI. And for certain encounters, you're going to be 1-shot if you're hit anyhow; in which case, optimize DPS so that the encounter ends as soon as possible.
