Today's Server Instability

For most purposes, there's no such thing as "rollback." Every single instance I see of someone specifying "rollback" occurring actually isn't so.

In spite of being a seamless online game, Path of Exile "Saves" your characters very much like a single-player game does, only it's done automatically. Specifically, it happens every time your character changes zone/instance.

So each time you step through a map portal? The game saves a snapshot of your character then, and that's your new "save." The game can also save whenever you disconnect, be it from your connection going out, to your game crashing, or you simply selecting "logout." Either way, the game notices that you're no longer connected, and makes a save then.

Whenever there's a crash on the SERVER side, this wipes out the "live" instance of your character, along with whatever zone they were in. This means the most recent version of the character is the "Save" file, which is loaded.

So, to illustrate two major examples:

  • If you use a map in your map device, and enter the first portal, the game saves as you enter the portal; in that situation, you no longer have the map, as it's just been consumed. If the instance server crashes while you're in it, you will be reloaded to that point: no map, and no items/EXP from while you were in it. Note that if you LEAVE the map at any point, you will have your "save" then, including any items you have collected on that trip.
  • If you die, as soon as you click the "revive" button (if not sooner) the game saves THEN, because you are no longer in that map, you are back in town/your hideout!

In neither case does the game "roll back" to an older file. I don't think GGG has ever had reason to resort to a backup of the character save database. (though I might be mistaken; even if then, it'd be a VERY rare occurence)

So, we have two lessons from this:

  • If you die in HC, you are definitely NOT getting reloaded. Ever. No point in asking for special treatment. (Which is the ONLY way this could be reverted)
  • If you're in a map, and a Mirror/Skyforth/Headhunter/etc. drops, (let's be seriously, you guys were lying when you claimed that) PORTAL OUT IMMEDIATELY. This will "save" the item.

I disagree with your claim that rollbacks rarely happen. Only been playing a week and already had 2 rollbacks. Each time I had identified an item and afterwards the item was UNID. This used to be exploited in d2 by identifying high worth uniqs to see if they got good rolls and if not, and then crash the server to unid it again if it was a poor roll to sell it for more unid.

Did you actually bother to read what I said at all, or just saw the first line, got angry, and decided to go "I'll show them!" It looks horrifically foolish for you to try that in public where everyone can see.

What you experienced was NOT a rollback, it was a loaded save.

A rollback is when the server reverts the save file to a backed-up copy. ("rollback" can be synonymous with "restore" and "revert" in this case)

In the case of the ID'ing, it's because your character was never saved with the identified item. Now, if you had identified it, THEN went through a portal, THEN it crashed, and came back without the item ID'd? That would be a rollback, because the game saves your character each time you enter a portal.
