You're better off using good rares

Example (both self found)

theres a lot of good rares in trade for this build but i wouldnt buy anything until merciless... no need

Rares will have the highest DPS over any uniques for totems, no question.
Don't even bother with the heartbreaker.

Consuming Dark won't have as high of a DPS as a fire weapon but it does have the benefit of being chaos instead of elemental. It also does have other upsides/downsides.

Benefits of Consuming dark (Going full chaos)
No chaos reflect
bypasses energy shield
lower chaos resistances on mobs than elemental
Can free up some nodes used for fire pen

Downsides of Consuming Dark
Lower DPS numbers than fire rares, even with fire pen, which doesn't reflect DPS benefits on the tooltip
Capped stats prohibit future improvement (Unique)
Does not have a curse to lower chaos resistance
loses out on resistance penetration (People just don't get how amazing fire pen is)
Poison isn't as good as ignite

just ripped my totemer as a 88 in a 74 map - 7,5k health, 7000k armor (i know..) - got oneshot by 6 magic devourers, and have had overall issues with those (especially tunneltrap :d) when magic packs (not dying instantly) - any suggestions for my new char?

i go dual flame totem but on crit with another passive tree and will use this knife as 1/2 weapon, with what should i craft it? flat fire dmg or crit?

or should i forget this weapon and go for wands?
