What is your opinion about new globes?

also, I love the lions; boobs don't make sense.

I alyways thought they had something to do with Lunaris temple. Back then act 3 lunaris was the end of the game and Piety chained human guinea pigs to her apparitions to experiment on them. I mean, the whole game has this "experimenting with humans and gems" theme. So it made sense for me to see chained people.
The darkness looms forebodingly...

My guess is that GGG simply wanted a design that fits with the new content. With the Lion for Lioneye and the skull for ... maybe Malachai?.

I always associated the three skulls-on-chains with Dialla; since she's got three skulls hung from her belt by chains.
I want the kitten globes :)

No I don't think they were "iconic", not even slightly. Show any gamer who knows of PoE but doesn't play it regularly a picture of the UI in 2.0 and ask them if they see any difference. I'd bet the answer 9/10 is; No.

"Iconic" is having the health red and the mana blue in ARPGs. I think you guys are throwing that word around haphazardly.

Iconic - in the modern age is merely representational, like the following for Windows and PoE:

Like a clickable program icon, the user interface does garner a lot of familiarity with players. Whether the old UI memorably identified Path of Exile to most people is certainly debatable. Reusing the life/mana globe concept readily identifies the game as something in the vein of Diablo as an ARPG, but it also makes it difficult to stand out as unique. There's something to be said for an interface choosing intuitive over uniqueness.

Judging by all the programs with "skinning" options, there are people who like to customize their UI. Players that are willing to spend money to customize the look of their characters are likely to want to customize their UI.

Not offering purchasable UI options in the MTX shop would be like a cable company not offering sports channels.

^ I'm not disagreeing with your point, but choosing 2 now defunct logos to illustrate it confuses me

They were used to show that Iconic doesn't always mean something like Superman's S, it can be far more mundance. Icons can and do change as you mention, with the usual goal of the new logo being even more recognizable, or representing the newer product so people will think about it and not an older product. In this latter goal, the new UI works, in the sense that it represents a change in the game, just as the Windows 8 logo succeeded in representing a change from Windows 7.

This is not to say that I think the Awakening is like Windows 8 - I like the expansion quite a bit.

Change for change's sake is not always a good thing. Having options, though, is tough to beat.
