Incident Report for Item Loss Bug

Seriously, I just dont understand why some of you guys are on GGG's side in this incident, they know about this issue for 1 WEEK, and didn't even bother to make any announcements to warn the players. Now that it had gone out of control and affected about ~300 people (which I doubt only that many), they don't even bother to do something to make it right. It's like a giant kick in the nuts to all the people that have been supporting the game.
So to sum up
"Thank you for supporting us with your donation, we will use your hard earned money to make our game better so you can enjoy it even more." and then " Oh wait, you lost your items due to a nasty bug? oh yes we knew about this bug, yes it was our fault, yes you were just a victim, but no we will not provide you with any compensation, just shut up and deal with it."

No, a one month roll back is out of the question.

yes it probably is.

I just hope GGG has learned from this incident and will put a system in place that allows them to track items in case this happens again in the future.

imo game items already have a unique ID and there most likely is a item tracker but this ID just points to a database entry and doesn't store the item's current and previous properties.

logging every user action in such a detail that it includes modifications made for items over monthly periods would be madness and wasted computing time/storage space. the only practicable method in single cases is to compare the stats of an item from a server snapshot made a month ago to now but for that the user would need to provide the unique id he doesn't know.

ggg's support is really fast and one of the reasons is that it doesn't have to cope with "restore requests".
imho, if ggg would make a exception for this incident it would deliver their support guys to hands of "user base from hell" which would clock support mail accounts for months. with maybe 1-2% of requests being rectified. not practicable.

legitimate item deletion is indistinguishable from loss due to this bug. We are unable to restore items lost in this way.

It is distinguishable by logic and reasonableness. No one will destroy (not vendor!) their (for example) 5-L chest, used on high-level character for a long time. I think there may be a workaround...

I agree, I think that it can be reasonable, expecially if it's a moderately low number of items (300)
It may not work with ALL the disappearences, but a stack of exalted orbs, a windripper or even a rare 4L full of high level gem, are not things "logically" vendor trashed.. expecially if you have a very limited time window to look at..

no friction, just a sincere opinion

I think I'd quit the game forever if the game deleted a mirror(ed) item with this bug and GGG said "no restore".

the likelyhood of one mirrored item being affected at 400 out of (maybe) 50 million items total in a bit unrealistic.

and even then, yes it's a sad thing players lost items they spent alot of time finding them but alot of players permanently quit for other reasons, game is going on.

if ggg would make periodic wipes it wouldn't be that bad. maybe that incident is a push to rethink that policy.

At least 2 shavs (one legacy 6L), a windripper, a pair of acuities and a stack of exalteds have disappeared. What are the chances? It only (afaik) affected players who bought the new supporter packs playing on the live servers. At this time this is mostly long term players/supporters that by default have more valuable gear...

Well, as a developer, let me say that one week to find, understand AND fix such very complex bug is EXTREMELY short, so kudos to them, they did great work. It's entirely possible that they took the whole week to just understand what was happening, and just a few hours to fix the problem, preventing them to notify the players until fully comprehending what was happening. It often works that way.

what would you have done if you were in charge? tell players to stop playing until the bug is found? (because that's the only reasonable procedure there to prevent further damage)

without knowing details about the bug at all?

and you want to repeat that for every weird bug report players state in the bug section because there could be some serious issue behind?

you want to roll back servers for a month playtime everytime a minority of users has lost some some items due to bugs?

i wouldn't play your game.

I LOVE THIS GAAAAAME!!!!
To everyone who is spewing bile here and threatening to quit/sue/riot - do you do the same towards Microsoft, whose product line is full of bugs of similar nature?

Just this year: http://www.cvedetails.com/vulnerability-list/vendor_id-26/year-2015/Microsoft.html

And that's just bugs which have security consequences, there are plenty more behind the curtain.

Wipe? What? Permanent leagues? You like wipes? Go play temp leagues.

i already do ;) and i'm too lazy to clean my stashes in permanent leagues until ggg introduced a more comfortable stash handling.

my general understanding is that the permanence of items (basically forever (update: and if bugs occur)) is preventing a more rewarding gameplay. that's why i'm for periodic wipes.

There's always a bunch of white knights who trot out to "defend" GGG regardless of the circumstance. Back in the open beta days, there were people who would post in threads requesting permanent loot allocation to say they didn't think we should "create more work for GGG".

It is perfectly reasonable for players in a loot hunt game to be concerned about said loot just vanishing. Even if this bug is squashed, there will be others, and who's to say it won't be your Shavs or Acuity that gets hit next time with nothing but a "sorry too bad shit happens".
