Item Development - Information

While an interesting concept, I am a bit disappointed that this skill is tied to a unique item and a staff at that. Ever since Order of the Frozen Sky I was excited at the potential addition of a similar skill. Now, I am quite sure that a streamer will exploit this unique which in turn will make GGG nerf the item to crap, leaving us with a wasted item and skill.

Also, since this is an update on semantics and the use of language to convey a message I really don't like the following statement: You'll be able to see the final result of our ongoing discussion when the expansion containing Act Four launches later this year...

Why not be a little more specific instead of incredibly vague. Later this year can mean tomorrow or December 31st. Something less vague like This Summer actually sits better with me.
GGG listens to its fans!!! Thank you!
yes charan you are right, "later this year" can mean many things..

I just hope it's soonish :)
do what you want to the girl, but leave me alone.
Question: If support gems in the staff are linked to the skill, how does the staff choose what gems to link? For example, what if the staff has 6 sockets but is 3L3L for the links? Which sockets get linked to the skill?

My guess is you get two versions of the spell.
I'm a forum warrior, i was born to post, raised to defend my league. Now my post has been removed, chained and exiled by mods who Ban. Ban is my brother; i do not fear it. I see it in the eyes of men and beasts that i troll. It will take me to play the actual game when i am ready and i am not ready.
why not "cast on hit"?

that will make it much more powerful.

My enthusiasm for the skill has dropped significantly since its an oskill. How can I plan for an Ice Storm build without any guarantee that it will drop for me??? Charan mentioned Titan Quest but in a way this skill makes me think of Diablo 3. There, I said it!!! DIABLO 3!!!

Am I understanding correctly that icestorm will not be an available gem btw?

That appears to be the case, which is why I'm curious why folks would consider it 'noob friendly'. If anything, it's working under two fairly clear assumptions, only one of which the OP addresses. That first one is delivery of information (how much) -- in the end, they're sort of assuming people will be able to infer what it does from the name. This is a step above Titan Quest, where you just had to test it out to see.

The other assumption, and this is the potentially nefarious one, is that people will be able to acquire this item relatively easily. We don't know the rarity tier yet. And there's always a chance that more active/dedicated traders will hoard these things just to bump the price/value.

__

Item-only skills (oskills) are a bad idea for this game as it stands. There, I said it. I figured the reason we didn't get them earlier wasn't just a tech issue (as Rory stated) but because GGG *knew* oskills would be a bad idea for this game. This game in particular, which seems to prize diversity and choice over forced equipment. But what was merely implicit so far (that certain items really are 'givens') is not explicit (you cannot do an icestorm build without this staff).

Well, whatever. This is only a tiny piece of the patch that brings the expansion. But between the cop-out item filter, the very likely chance that Kaom (and other legendary figures) will be in Act 4 and now just boringly copying Titan Quest's oskills, I can't say that I'm seeing much of that GGG magic that combined the old to make the new. We've come a long way from the days when we happily said "FFVII+FFX+Guild Wars 1+D2=Path of Exile!" as though it was the most amazing thing to happen to the ARPG world (and maybe it was).

__

That said, this concept of 'damage per intelligence' probably should have been applied to spells to begin with. Much more elegant than arbitrary damage per skill level, much easier to balance. Who knows, maybe they WILL do that with this expansion patch. That'd be cool. Restricting it to a single item-skill seems half-arsed.

Why dont you just accept that it will be a different kind of build-enabling unique and thats it?

I'm sorry but you sound like an old conservative dinosaur that doesn't like change and prefers stagnation

I have a CWDT/Discharge character that I cannot play in Hardcore because I can't get a Scold's Bridle there.

If i want to proc discharges with molten strike then my only option is to get a mjolner.

Get it? Unique items are supposed to do unique things that arent possible through rare items, this staff is only 1 item in a heap of new uniques we will be getting on top of already good number of uniques.

Stop holding the game back and embrace change, stagnation kills games more than anything else.

EDIT: And what is the problem if they "copy Titan Quest"? If its a cool idea then its smart to copy it. Hell, the entire game is a copy and mashup of elements of other games, Skill Gem Link system? Check Final Fantasy VII, Passive Skill Tree? Check Final Fantasy X, I could go on with everything, the trading system? Heavily influenced by Everquest and Diablo 2. It doesn't matter where the idea comes from as long as the execution is smooth, coherent and with quality.

"later this year" sounds like GGG is trying to tell us in the most sensible way, that we're not seeing Act4 something like 2 weeks after the 1-Month-League like everyone is expecting, without loosing too much active players.
I hope we get something in between, I can wait any additional time as long as GGG feeds me something to keep playing. :)
Perception is reality.
I don't want to see 30 of these uniques that grant skills. In a small dose this is brilliant to have though. Just tell me I can give you $1000 to get book storms in the hands of a player this way, and I will send the money over.

ensuring players have the right amount of information

good. now what about adding "TO ATTACKS" to the "Adds x-y dmg" item mod? imho it is one of the most confusing and incomplete piece of info for new players out there. never figured out the reasoning for not making it clear.

Listen to this guy.

Most of my friends I introduced to the game and got an item with +damage on it (mostly rings or amulets) thought it applies to spells and were very disappointed when I told them it doesn't. If it said "Adds x+y physical damage to (melee) attacks" this wouldn't be a problem. Simple as that. This is also true for Iron Rings. A NEW player could assume it works with EK since that's a physical spell ...

I'd love to know more about this too. With a 6S 0L version of the staff would we get 6 versions of Icestorm? Or a single Icestorm with 6 supports? If so, noone would bother linking sockets on the staff.
