Peak DPS: 2.3M Splash against monsters in maps. 2.1M Single target against Atziri.
Gear & Gem Setup
Your gear needs to cover several things: 1. 175% Resist to each element. So with merciless -60 and L20 eleweakness -40 (-39 but for ease of math, -40) you will have 75% resist in ele weakness maps. 2. 30-50% Chaos resist, recommended so you don't instadie to zombie poison clouds and alchemist bombs. 3. 170% mana regen. This lets you sustain L20 AA mobile (290 mana/sec required) and casting 6L spirits with empower+splash (265). It is worth getting as much mana regen as you can so that you can achieve your DPS potential under vaal haste. 4. 43 dex. The tree will give you 110, and you need 43 more to reach 153 for L20 haste and vaal haste. The next skillpoint-saving breakpoints are 73 dex, and then 103 dex from gear. Your gear should ideally should be ES-based with life.
It's better to get pure es gear over es/ar or es/ev.
Since we're mitigating small-sized phys hits with AA, we only worry about medium and large phys hits. Large phys hits are rare, I can only think of Dominus's fist of God, and Vaal Smash. Getting a bit of armor (10kish) won't make a big difference against medium-size phys damage hits compared to just using Rumi's flask and having more ES. OTOH pure ES works both against phys hits and elemental ones, and med-large elemental hits are prevalent from rogue exiles, map bosses, and Atziri. The setup I'm currently using was suggested by Sherkhan. Staff: SRS Armor: RM-Disc-Haste RM-BM-Clarity Glove: Dur-Vhaste-Vdisc-Flesh Hat: RM-Gen-Hatred-AA Boot: Curse on Hit - Arc - Ele weakness - Ele Prolif/Enfeeble
Spell Totem & Other curse on hit setups
Since curse on hit saves you the time to cast totem and one curse, you can use this time to cast more spirits. As a result you may get more real-world DPS than you would with generosity-hatred because you have more spirits out. For longer fights, or for fights where you would require two casts of arc to apply EE/curses to everything, you will get more real world DPS with the spell totem setup. It's up to you to judge which setup is best. Staff: SRS-Echo-MPD-Multi-Msplash-Empower or SRS-Echo-MPD-Multi-Msplash-Minion Damage if you don't have +1 gems on staff and L3+ empower. Note that it requires 5 off-colors in a pure ES armor. In order to do this setup, you would want to use a Int/Str hybrid armor. Leveling Guide
Leveling 1-60 fast (assuming ~2ex of gear is available) 1-10: use a redbeak or last resort and molten strike. Rings can either be blackheart, kaoms, perandus or rares. Thousand Ribbons armor is BiS at this point. 10-24: use a stormcloud bow, and use ice shot - wed - added cold - added light. This is a ranged aoe skill that simply 1-2 shots stuff at the L10-24 areas. To help with requirements and life leech use a hyrri's quiver. Add meginord belt, and the ignomnon gold amulet. Perandus or Eleron rings and 2 mana flasks to help deal with mana. 24-31: Get a 3L+ searing touch staff. Use searing bond - increased burning damage - minion & totem resist in the 3L. Use elemental weakness to curse stuff. (Fire penetration gem doesn't work with searing bond). 31-60+: At L31 your tree should look like this. This is mainly to get EE and enough aura nodes to run Hatred and Clarity. Now you become OP. In a 6L (tabula): use SRS - MPD - Multi - Echo - Splash - Min Dmg In a 4L: use ball lightning - gmp - curse on hit - elemental weakness. This will curse & proc EE for searing bond as well as SRS. In a 3L: Searing Bond - Inc Burning - Min & Tot Resist In a 3L: Red Mana - Hatred - Clarity In a 3L: Inc Dur - Vaal Haste - Flesh Offering Rings should be perandus to help with mana regen. Belt should be a rare or perandus to help with attributes. Get goldwyrm on at 34 to further help with mana regen. You may find that you have enough mana regen to use arctic armor, in which case use it. At L41/L54 feel free to switch goldrim and searing touch for: Pre-hybrid Eldritch Battery build The L95 tree requires about 170% mana regen from gear to work properly. While this is not hard to get I wouldn't make a character that depends on it. Rather I would use Eldritch Battery, and switch after I got good jewelry/gear. That's why the leveling build has Eldritch Battery but the main L95 build does not. Bandits: Oak/Kill/Kill Gems: Weapon: 3L: SRS-Multistrike-Echo 4L: -MPD 5L: -Splash 6L: -Minion Damage 2L: Spell Totem - Arc 4L: Increased Duratino - Vaal Haste - Flesh Offering - Elemental Weakness 4S: Reduced Mana - Clarity - Haste | Arctic Armor 4S: Reduced Mana - Generosity - Hatred | Flammability / Enfeeble 4L: CwDT (L1) - Enduring Cry (L5) - Immortal Call (L3) - Increased Duration (L20) Notes: Minion damage is better than empower until your empower acts as a L4 or L5 empower. For single targets I recommend replacing splash with increased duration or melee on full life (e.g. for queen atziri) or added fire if you're using both elemental weakness and flammability. Leveling Gear: Armor: Cloak of Defiance (preferred) or rare with ES, life, and resists. Ideally you want a 6s armor, so it may be worth buying a rare if it's already 6s. You only need 4L and 2L. Hat: Aim for Alphas. Until you get Alpha's you can use Charisma in the tree to run 2*60 auras. Weapon: The most cost-effective weapon is a 6L +2 fire staff. Next is 6L +1 gems any weapon (bows can be used with defensive quivers). Then 5L +2 fire or +1 gems. And last but still decent, a 4L +2 minion hat. Rings and Amulet: Aim for 60+ life and 70+ total resist. Belt: Life, Resist, and Armor. Boots/Gloves: ES-based with resists and life. Goldwyrm, and Aurseize are good options if you're looking for a little extra rarity. Tips: *You won't need to use discipline, vaal discipline, and you won't need to use clarity on blood magic. Instead I would recommend a cwdt-ec-ic-inc dur setup. *Until you get Alpha's howl feel free to get Charisma and respec later. *You will also need to take the +30 dex nodes as your haste gems level up. *When leveling feel free to use a short path to Eldritch Battery. Do this once you can run Hatred+Clarity and use your spirits as a main source of damage. Just respec the 3 points once you have enough to reach it the long way around.
FAQ
SRS & Spell Damage, Fire Damage, Crit Chance/Multi, etc
SRS is a minion, that means it behaves as its own entity with its own stat sheet. The only stats it gets from you are minion damage and skill duration stats. The only other way to improve its stats is to link support gems to it. It is classified as a spell, but it doesn't do any spell damage, and it itself uses a melee attack. It doesn't use any spells. This means that %fire damage, and %spell damage from gear or tree (not including support gems) will not affect the damage SRS do. %Fire damage directly linked to SRS (eg from quality on added fire gem) will increase the damage SRS does. I don't know whether the 10% spell damage from quality on spell echo will increase damage on SRS, but my intuition is not since SRS use melee attacks and not spells. (Melee) physical damage from tree, or %increased damage on items (eg Le Heup of All) will also not work with SRS. This stuff increases the stats of your character, but not the stats of your RS minions. However, once these affixes are on support gems (melee physical damage or culling strike) linked to your RS, they do have an effect. (Spell) crit chance and (spell) crit multi work the same way. If it is on for example on an amu or on tree it won't affect SRS. However you could link inc crit or crit multi gems to SRS, and they should work.
DPS
My DPS: these numbers are with Flesh Offering Up, Vaal Haste Up, EE Proc'd. If it seems unrealistic, try the build. You'd be surprised how much uptime you can get for these abilities with good mechanics, 90% duration on tree, and a 74% duration gem. AoE with Eleweakness (no Flammability), against a target with 40/40/40 resists (blue packs in maps): DPS = 1436810 NSpirit = 28.7354 Dmg = 8387.65 APS = 8.27962 Single target with Eleweakness+Flammability, against target with 75/75/75 resists (Atziri): DPS = 2030380 NSpirit = 28.7354 Dmg = 11852.7 APS = 8.27962
Cheap? You're using headhunter...
By cheap I mean it's cheap to get started, and be effective at doing maps. All you need is a 5L weapon. Once you have a build that can do many map mods effectively, you will be able to acquire wealth. Once you acquire wealth you can invest in upgrades into this build. The DPS upgrades are 6L, 6L+3 fire, L4 Empower, and finally Headhunter. After that you can upgrade your jewelry to have cast speed, and defensive stats. Headhunter is ok if you just want DPS, but it's actually not as strong as it looks since there's no way to increase the 20sec duration. A rare belt is actually more useful in most situations, especially boss fights since you typically won't be killing rares within 20sec of fighting a boss.
CI Tree
Something like this. Not recommended, just go life/es hybrid if you have ES gear. To quote Sherkhan, "CI is a lazy keystone."
Pure life scion build
L91 Tree L96 Tree Oak kill kill Credit to Rhaegar_G for the flask-effect specialist idea.
Comparison of this build to others
Compared to my life/es build: This build is more flexible in terms of gearing, but has a smaller HP buffer. It will top out at 6.5k life whereas life/ES will top out at 9.5k life+ES. You can quickly heal all of 6.5k life with flasks but you cannot use vaal discipline to further boost your EHP. You are less vulnerable to chaos damage since all of your HP is life. You can use a 4L cwdt or animate weapon to help you be more tank/distract enemies whereas life/es hybrid doesn't have the socket space for it. OTOH life/es hybrid uses double curse and hatred-generosity for more SRS DPS. Compared to AlexUngur's life build: His build is 165% max life, +70 dex on tree, and 90% MD, 20% Min Atk. This build is 190% max life, +80 dex, 65% MD, 12% Min Atk. Or you can get the 30% flask effect cluster and drop down to 178% max life. The difference is this gets 1.1M peak DPS and he get gets 1.2M peak DPS. Our base life is around 1.7k at L91. So a difference of 25% max life is around 500.
Gear/Gems
Staff: +2/3 Fire Staff with Cast Speed > Mana Reg > Chaos Res > Mana Armor: Belly of the Beast Gloves, Helm: Rare with res life and ES. You need about +400 ES from gear total to be fine with mana reservation. Aurseize are ok. Alpha's is an option, but only if you plan on using an extra 40% aura, otherwise the 8% reservation isn't useful. Boots: Rare with life es movespeed or goldwyrm for iiq/mana reg or atziri's step for spell dodge. Rings: res life mana reg Amu: Atziri's foible or rare with mana reg cast speed and life Notes: You will need +54 dex from gear to use L20 haste/vaal haste. You will either need to get ~42 res over cap to deal with elemental weakness maps, or you will have to use alpha's (only if you have 300-400 ES+Mana from other gear, otherwise you won't have enough unreserved mana to cast) and purity of elements. Flasks: Rumi's or Granite Bubbling Divine of Grounding Bubbling Divine of Heat Catalysed Eternal of Staunching Ample Quicksilver of Warding Notes: Replace one of the divine flasks with a resist flask with Ample/same suffix as the divine. When to replace: Extra elemental damage map mod => Flask of that element Crematorium, Rogue Exiles map mod => Ruby Necropolis, Shrine => Saphire Precint, Palace => Topaz Gems: Staff: SRS-Echo-Multi-Melee Phys-Melee Splash-Minion Damage or Empower effective L4+ 4L: Red Mana - Haste - Clarity - Ele Weakness/Enfeeble 4L: Inc Dur - Vaal Haste - Flesh Offering - Arctic Armor 2L: Spell Totem - Arc 4S: Red Mana - Hatred - Generosity - Portal 4L: Animate Weapon or CWDT Notes: Drop generosity , and put curse into inc dur link if you don't have a 6S armor.
Mechanics of Playing Double Curse
Until you have 6 spirits out you will get more DPS by creating spirits than casting curses. Therefore you should do this in most fights: 1. Cast 6 spirits (3 cast actions with echo). 2. Cast ele weakness. 3. Cast flammability. 4. Cast totem. 5. Cast flesh offering. 6. Continue casting spirits. Skip flesh offering if it's up from a previous pack. If using enfeeble as a 2nd curse in hard content, you should cast that before casting any spirits. Pop vaal haste as soon as it's up, don't try to save it for the right situation. When soloing your goal is to have vaal haste up almost 100% of the time, so act quick. In parties you have to slow down and wait for others to keep up, so you may not be able to get 100% uptime.
Map Mods
Undoable: Blood Magic, No regen. Hard: Half regen, elemental weakness. We can't use purity of elements, and our gear is stretched, so that it will be hard to get max res with ele weakness.
3% Life Leech Node
Against a target cursed with ele weakness spirits do about 2.5k cold, 2.5k fire, and 2.5k phys damage per hit, and attack just over 8 times per second. At L27 they also have 4.5kish HP and 65% fire res. Without the 3% node they have 1% leech, with it they have 4%. Against 18% ele reflect: 2.5k cold * 0.18 = 450 cold. 2.5k fire * 0.18 * 0.35 = 157.5. 1% Leech = 75 HP. Net HP per hit per target (each target in splash radius) = -450-157.5+75=-532. Hits to kill self = 8.5. Against 18% phys reflect: 2.5k phys * 0.18 = 450. 75 Leech, 375 HP lost per hit. Kills itself in 12 hits. With 3% extra leech: against ele reflect now it's 14.6 hits, and against phys reflect now it's 30 hits. The difference in terms of amount of damage outputted is large.
Mana Regen
Requirements: Using my DPS spreadsheet we see that we need 262 mana/sec to support L20 AA + 6L spirit with empower+splash, 290 mana/sec to support L20 AA moblie, and 370 mana/sec to support L20+6L spirit on vaal haste. We get 1.75% of our max mana as regen, and L20 clarity gives 24.6 mana regen. We take 175% mana regen from tree. With 1400 mana we get 1400*0.0175+24.6*(1+0.48+0.26)=67.3 mana regen/sec base. In order to get 300 regen we solve 300=67.3*(1+1.75+R) or R=1.7. So we need 170% mana regen from gear to sustain. With 1400 mana to get 370 mana regen we need 274% mana regen from gear. Let's say we're ok with 350 mana regen, since we have some ~140 free mana and we can sustain a deficit for a 5-6sec. To reach 350 mana/sec we need 245% mana reg on gear. 50/ring 60/amu That leaves 95-125 from boots+staff. Thus we can only really sustain vaal haste if we use goldwyrm and a staff with regen.
Uber
Forie killed uber with almost this exact build. Check his thread for good tactics information and a video of how he did it. --- I would do vaals the same as my 1.2 video. Then for trio I would use either vaal summon skeletons like Ghazzy, or Animate Weapons like Rhaegar_G. For atziri herself I would mostly play the same as regular, except I would do the vaal haste swap trick for the clone phase. Rhaegar_G is also working on a SRS build that will be able to do uber. Once he figures it out, he said he may post it.
Basic staff crafting tips
The staff crafting tips are for starting from a white staff. First you transmute it, and use orbs of alterations/augmentations. If you want to get +2 fire you should expect to use about 60 alterations/augmentations (total, not each). +1 gems is more rare, it takes about 300. If you want to get a good suffix it would take many more than 60 or 300, since suffixes are independent. For example cast speed and +2 is probably 60*20 or more. After you get a nice magic staff you just regal it or et-regal if you got +1 and a tier 1 suffix. So if you want to craft +3 fire you should alt +1 gems and regal +2 fire. Cost af 6Ling a +3 fire staff: 350*2+1500*8 = exactly 12700 alts at vendor. Cost of +3 firing a 6L staff: 60alts*300alts+60 regals = 18000 alts + 60 regals in expectation. Rolling +1 gems on a non-staff weapon is easier. Rolling +2 fire on a staff is easy. So buy one that is already 5L and roll +2, don't waste currency 5Ling a +2 staff unless it has three useful suffixes (cast, regen, res). A 5L +3 fire is about the same as 6L +2 fire. (See DPS comparison) Buy a 5L weapon/staff and roll +2. If you buy a 6L your goal should be to roll +1 gems or +2 fire (they are equivalent with L3+ empower) and a useful suffix such as cast speed, mana regen, resist, or attack speed for leap slam. If you buy a bow, you can use a quiver to help cap res. Or the ES-regen unique quiver. (thanks to mattc aka brainssss for this idea) Leave one suffix spot open, (i.e. don't yolo ex if you only have 1 suffix left) for adding mana regen or cast speed from forsaken masters.
Masters
Eleron, Catarina, Zana, Haku. I don't have much experience with 1.2, that's just my guess.
DPS Comparison

Tips for Atziri
Video of the tactics described below in use in 1.1.5. In general, bring 4 vaal haste gems. One will be in your equipment, the others in your inventory. Once a VH gem reaches full charge, swap it for one in your inventory that isn't charged. You will swap VH gems for the atziri split phases. You will also have desecrate in your switch. Double Vaals Flasks: rumi/topaz and hp/hp/quicksilver. Spirit: No melee splash. Curse: Elemental weakness. When you enter the room travel along the wall on your character's right to the bottom Vaal. Do not come close to the top Vaal at first. This way the bottom Vaal will spawn 3-4 sec before the top one. Stand on top of the bottom vaal. Precast desecrate 3x from switch in between the two vaals, and place arc totem in between them. Cast spirits until the orifice under the bottom vaal turns black. Then pop vaal haste and continue casting spirits. Pop flesh offering right before the vaal shows up. When the bottom vaal dies move to the top one and precast spirits there. Sometimes (1/15 runs or so) the bottom vaal will go into the ground immediately. Kill the top vaal and then go back to kill bottom. This is the only case where you may need to use topaz flasks. Trio Flasks: Rumi, Bleed Removal HP * 3, Amethyst with Runspeed Spirit: use melee splash. Curse: Enfeeble. As soon as you enter the trio room don't move. Pre-cast desecerate, and place a arc-totem in range of the trio (they won't begin attacking it until you move). Then cast flesh-offering, cast vaal haste, pop rumi, run up to the trio, enfeeble them and kill the ranged one, the cycloner, and then double-striker. Do this by just standing right next to them. Run out of the poison clouds, watch for bleed stacks and use bleed removal flasks. Recast totem and enfeeble as needed. Atziri Flasks: 2*ruby, 2*bleed removal, 1*curse removal quicksilver. Spirit: no splash. Curse: Elemental Weakness. As soon as you enter the queen's chamber don't move. Precast desecrate in 4 separate locations and arc-totem. Again she won't attack the totem until you move, so put it nice and close. Pop desecrate, pop your anti curse quicksilver, run up to atziri curse her, and attack. Dodge flameblasts/stormcalls, but try to stay near atziri so spirits don't have to travel much. Don't bother swaping in splash for feeding phase. And try to save corpses for you to flesh offer later during split phase. As soon as she goes into split phase you need to pop vaal haste, pop flesh offering, make sure totem is still up, and go pre-cast spirits in between two clones. If your spirits are attacking the clone holding mirror, you will have to move to an other clone and cast spirits there, don't try to kill the mirror clone. As soon as you finish clone phase, go to bottom left corner, ignore atziri, and calmly swap in a fresh vaal haste gem for the next clone phase.

Me likey :3
this is all quite nice, especially the DPS calculation part is legit as fuck. I like the IR part, it makes a lot of sense to go there. Less screen clutter from useless minions is also pretty sweet. And props on the 3:20 George run, that was pretty cool. Especially considering movement is pretty bad with a spec like this. I'm tempted to do one with a fast dagger and whirling blades instead, putting the spirits in the chest. But then again it would be quite different from the actual spec I guess... I'm proud I made the build that got hotfix nerfed by 80% in under a week :

from my experience if u are also using animate weapons and diligently casting those, once u amass a sizable amount the weapons will kill off the mobs before you even start churning out SRS lol. and you only need 4 L for that and they make decent damage soaks too. vaal skeletons are also great.

" I definitely agree with this. My issue is that the time spent animate decreases your overall clear time. It also wears your eyes out to keep reading white text for weapons. I recommend people level with animate weapons in a 4L, and decide for themsleves whether they want to keep using it in maps. All my builds /view-thread/1430399

New video of Courtyard boss fight with HeadBangGang added.
Added a section in "Gearing" comparing cloak of defiance, lightning coil, and rare armors. Does anyone have any thoughts? Suggestions, questions? All my builds /view-thread/1430399

I really appreciate you taking the time to make these edits to help with the progression of gameplay and decisions. One thing I did notice, however, was a gem reward repeat in your list.
