Salvaging CI - Suggestions open to discussion

Maybe I'm overlooking something here, but why can't you wear this in conjunction with a CI build? Seems like it could be a pretty good ES piece for a CI caster.

Normally chaos damage bypasses ES, which means there's little resistance against it and it's why people use CI, to make them immune to it.

This armor makes ES handle chaos damage therefore there's no need for CI.

That's why he's saying that armor killed CI.

Never argue with an idiot. They'll bring you down to their level, and beat you with experience!

I actually thought CI should do something similar to the new unique armor before I even saw it. I was thinking of something along the lines of CI doing the following:

1. chaos damage no longer bypasses energy shield.
2. +25% chaos resistance.
3. 25% reduced health.
it does NOT kill ci,

For example

in a map where you take constant chaos damage, you will never be able to regenerate shield.
However with CI you can.
With that new unique you can not.

that unique just allows ppl to use low life builds. I.e. blood rage /red beak / pain at
I think that CI overall is fine. You get 9k shield compared to 5k health. That's almost twice the buffer. And you take much less life nodes to boot! What's not to like?

1. Getting high ES is much more gear-dependent than getting high-life. To get high life you need to roll one high stat on each piece of gear. For CI, you have to roll two high stats (both prefixes?). The odds of that happening are way way way lower.

2. When you get frozen, thaw time is forever. Same thing with stun.

3. CI will perpetually have the problem that it is either overpowered for elemental damage or underpowered for physical damage, due to the way elemental defenses work relative to physical defenses, when you go CI.

4. In my opinion, at least, life regen and potions are much more useful than ES's shield recovery mechanism for keeping you alive, especially when using insta-pots.

The vast majority of HC players are health/armor based, either through actual armor or iron reflexes, and there's good reason for it. I would rather see ES and evasion boosted to be more useful and have CI make hybrid builds more viable.

As a side note, my very first character in closed beta was a CI character and I did fine with mediocre gear, partially because at the time ES and granite flasks were overpowered. However, abanonded my first character in open beta, also CI-based, after realizing that, even after investing in practically every ES node I could find (152% increased total at level 60), I still needed way better gear to make more progress in merciless and I was completely stuck. I've had much more success with life/armor builds since.

The best use I can find for ES at this point is to convert it to mana with EB. At least then it's doing something useful!

Aren't all stun durations the same?

Also I thought armor didn't help in reduction of large chunks of physical damage.

i thought armor's physical damage reduction applies to energy shield?

It does. But you wont have much armor as a CI char, because you'll only choose ES-gear.

i was thinking, however, why can't we get hybrid armor? shouldn't we have enough ES with the new CI buff? we can make use of a bit of armor and evasion... idk. just wondering.

You sure can use hybrid armor, and the best hybrid armor in the game would probably have enough ES for you. However, I struggled enormously to get enough ES even with pure ES gear, while I found it way easier to gear up a life/armor character.
