[Official] WINE info thread

Thank you guys i must try it then
I'm just preparing for the weekend and "Allocating Space..." is now running around 60 minutes and seems to be stuck at 75%
I will try to update in a windows VM because i don't have any windows installation on my system

By the way i had to install "vcrun2010"

Update:
i didn't interrupt the "Allocating Space..." and now after 2.5 hours it has finished and the update begun to download

Using PlayOnLinux seems to work very well for a free substitute. I also use Crossover sometimes, maybe some help.

Now that there is for really real a steam client coming to linux, I think the viability of a native linux client has gone up quite a bit.

PoE uses the DirectX API, an abstraction layer which is emulated by wine. I don't think they can just stop using that and make the graphics and stuff in OpenGL, it's less likely that ~6 programmers could support a port to an OS as varied as Linux, so it's more likely we will keep using compatibility layers for this game.

I would like a native installer/launcher though, if they could package up something with their little sync program and made it depend on wine and whatever libraries the game client needs, then sent it out to the distros to add to their repositories, it would bring a lot of eyes to their game.

Well, there is a mention in the FAQ, I think, of a possible MAC client in the future, so if they do that and add OpenGL for MAC there is a much greater chance of also doing a Linux client later. And games with OpenGL rendering work much better in Wine even if they don't actualy have a native client.

this may sound really stupid... but what is WINE?

Wine is a program used to open Windows based apps on a Mac.

More generally its for Unix-like operating systems, so Linux as well :) Btw thank you OP for the contribution!

not linux as well, its primarily for linux and then other unix systems :P
too bad path of exile halves its fps in wine, probably the compilers fault (if they are using intels or worse, microsofts, compiler)
Tried to play this weekend open test.
Constantly crashes for me (sound off) somewhere in d3dx9_42 (1-2% of times in other d3dx9_% lib).
On clean wineprefix with vcrun2010, d3dcompiler_43
wine 1.5.9, gentoo amd64 gf 8800gts 640mb
Tried it with Arch x64, Wine 1.5.9, GTX680, Nvidia 304.22 beta. I'm getting ~10fps. Any suggestions? Has anybody managed to run the game with a 680?
ty very much!
I just tried it out on a current Ubuntu 12.04 (aka precise, 32-bit version) with a default wine installation (version 1.4, default ubuntu package, no patches). The installation took forever (in the "allocating space" state) but the game works. Without sound I got about 20 fps (lowest video settings, windowed with 1024x768).

With sound I had maybe 7-10 fps.

Tested on an Athlon 64 X2 5200+, 2GB RAM, Geforce 8400 gs.

I'll retry that on my gaming PC and report back.
