One month of POE and I'm done... here's why
Your first character will take a long time.
Your second character will take a long time -1 hour Your third character will take a long time -2 hours Etc Etc. This is to be expected and is a learning curve that is accompanied with "EUREKA" moments. All that i got from your post is that you are unwilling to ride out the first long grind everybody had to go true. You even got freeby's handed out to you speeding up your process (most likely doubled it) in forms of a cheap multistrike and a 5-link. Multistrike i got for the very first time on my 8th character i got above lvl 60. (that's roughly 2/3 months into the game) The quest did not even exist at that time and it was a drop only gem. A 5-link, goddamn bro.... i got this elusive piece of material i think for the first time after 6 months of playtime. Really your dedication is lacking. Your expectations are not realistic when it comes to PoE. Now after a year and a half of playtime, i am able to run a character to lvl 80 in roughly 15/16 hours +-, just to give you an example. Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes

" after a week with d3 playing poe is like playing a character with Teleport on Melee Hit gem socketed somewhere that you can remove desync in this game is atrocious and has not changed since 'resync on stun' update almost year ago. dont like people posting about it? fine. but dont pretend that problem does not exist |

" Hey SL4Y3R, fixed that for ya. To the OP, thanks for your detailed feedback. I think you made remarkable progress for a novice starting out with nothing, in only one month's time. For many of us Beta veterans, it was several months before we completed Merciless and started in on maps. Most of us gave up on our first character after realizing our early build mistakes would make further attempts to progress futile. But that doomed first character collected enough decent leveling gear to twink out the next few attempts, making the rerolls through Normal and Cruel much quicker and more rewarding. Two key factors stand out as major sources of your frustration: lack of gameplay knowledge and lack of resources. A month is actually a fairly short time in which to absorb all the intricate details of build optimization and gameplay mechanics. But since you were playing so intensely, you wound up finishing the game before discovering how socket linking and support gems are intended to work. Armed with that knowledge, by the end of Normal an experienced player would've already acquired 4-linked gear and assembled the gem combos needed to take on Cruel. The fact that you made it all the way through Merciless with self-found gear and unoptimized skills shows a considerable amount of skill and perseverance. This points out the crucial source of your frustration, lack of resources. For all but strictly self-found players, completing Merciless with only two Chaos orbs would be considered a severe level of poverty and deprivation. Nowadays an inexpensive endgame build would typically cost at least two Exalted orbs. And, no, you wouldn't expect to see those Exalts drop for your first character. I've been playing for well over a year, and have had only three Exalts drop for me in that time, and that's by no means bad luck. Likewise, I've had virtually no high-level Rares or Uniques drop, the best I've gotten have been decent midgame rings and amulets. And no 5L or 6L items either. So how do experienced players get the good stuff in this game? Endgame gear is virtually always acquired by trading. Not surprising, but then where do you get the dozens of Chaos and Exalts it takes to pay for it all? For legit players, it's usually by grinding out Chaos orbs (via the lvl-60 Unique recipe), and selling cast-off items to other players. For the few high-level traders who can afford it, crafting Mirror-worthy items can pay off hugely. And for those who just want to pay2win, there's always RMT. Bottom line, you've made very quick progress through the preliminary stages of the game in just one month. And you've learned enough to get a good start on the red meat challenges of the game: socket-crafting, trading and mapping. These all require a sizable warchest of mid-level crafting orbs, bread-and-butter Chaos orbs, and eventually high-level Exalts. One piece of advice: don't be distracted or appalled by the obscene amounts of Exalts demanded for BiS trophy items and OP Legacy Uniques. These were minted exclusively for the well-heeled elites, and are in no way required to enjoy the most challenging depths of the game. Last edited by RogueMage#7621 on Apr 14, 2014, 2:53:52 PM

But, but, wait man...
You havent even tried to do some "crafting" and experience the pleasure of seeing tens of hours of orb collecting, melt before your eyes in an instant. While producing nothing useful. Stay a while and try some socketing and linking Or you could try our limited hardcore package; endgame progression deluxe, now with 25% more luck dependency! When night falls

" i desync at least once an hour and lag about every 5 minutes XD playtime only though |

I don't get why the OP had to grind out levels. If you just go through the story without rushing you should be overleveled until late Merciless.

" Only if you kill every single monster in every single area. If you play normally and complete all quests and kill bosses and mini-bosses - there's a chance you'll actually be underleveled by late act 2 merciless. Especially if you die a lot - and as a new player, you will. Alva: I'm sweating like a hog in heat
Shadow: That was fun |

" I made a similar mistake with my first char(s), which is not enough stacking life. I had some life mods on my items, and even grabbed some extra life nods on my way as well as several defensive nods. Because you know in a balanced game you are not expected to have 8*your base life to have any hope of one shot survival. As you can not face content without getting one shot, you simply go back and grind thinking 2-3 lvls will make some difference (which it wont). Once I learned how the damage scales, my next char had life mod (generous ones) on most items and had like %200+ life from nods. Then it was lol-faceroll. I really dislike the stat scaling balance in PoE. They should look at mobas (I know, I know TOTALLY different games, right) to learn how characters can become viable in so many different ways. You can make it work as a pure tank, or a pure glass cannon or anything in between. And one is not better than any other. Sadly not the case in PoE. |
