Vaal Orbs aren't a gamble. They're pretty much pointless. I HATE that they mostly do nothing at all.

Before 1.1 released I berated a guy on reddit for saying 'vaal orbs have a chance to do nothing' because I thought it was very bad design, as 'doing nothing' is as unexciting as it gets - no badge of honor bad outcome, obviously no good outcome, just an empty feeling, the definition of 'meh'. And I approve of mostly everything about PoE design (leech is another I disagree with because shotgunning skills utilizing lmp/gmp exist, this change wasn't elegant at all), so I never thought I'd see the day...

Welp!
You have at least good luck. The fact that all but two didn't mess up your items is good.

You must bear in mind that Vaal orbs have the following potential:

1. Completely wrecking an item, which isn't very common.

2. Wrecking an item from it's current worth. A Kaom's can turn into a valuable 6L rare chest with tri-res and good armor. Not a good trade, but at least you have something you can sell to get something back.

3. Nothing other than preventing further corruption.

4. Adding a property that makes the item more worthwhile.

5. Adding a property that can multiply the item's value. A item worth 1-20 chaos now becomes 1-10 exalts. An item worth 1-10 exalts now becomes worth 20-100 exalts. A Tabula Rasa usually goes for 2-4 exalts, and becomes at least 20 if you get a +1 to all gems on it. That's an increase of 5-10 times the normal value.

RNG is a dangerous game to play. This is why you should be aware of the risk versus reward with the currency in this game.
There is no risk vs reward with this game's currency. It is always a mistake to craft. Every single orb has a losing Expected Value by a huge margin. Every single use of an Orb, by anyone, is a mistake and a loss of value.

The only proper move is to never craft, and to save those orbs for trading for what you want.

LOL!

Tell me what you trade for wasn't crafted by those rich enough to craft, then repeat what you just lied about.

The only way to get a six link is follows:

1. Use anywhere from 1-10,000 Orbs of Fusing

2. Play the game for 1-10,000 hours, until a six socketed item drops enough for it to be six linked. Oh, wait, that more than exponentially lowers the chances of a six link since the game RNGs the six sockets.

3. Trade for an item you want that either someone found or crafted. (~5% compared to ~95%)

Now, while a good amount of the six links may drop, the majority of them are crafted by the players that spend more than eight hours playing this game until their fingers bleed. This is more so the case when you are talking about six linked non-uniques, as these are easier to craft.

Crafting a six link rare:

1. Use Jeweler's Orbs to get six sockets. Use Armorer's Scraps to get 20% quality before each use to maximize each orb.

2. Use Orbs of Fusing to get six links. Use Armorer's Scraps as previously stated.

3. Use an Orb of Transmutation or Orb of Alchemy depending on currency.

4. If you used a Trasmutation, use Orbs of Augmentation and Orbs of Alteration to roll the most important stats you want on an item. If you used an Orb of Alchemy, use Chaos Orbs until you get rolls you like.

5. Once you Alt and Augment the rolls you like most, use a Regal Orb to randomly roll additional mods and make the item rare. Use Chaos Orbs and Orbs of Scouring to restart and redo the process.

6. Once you find an item you like you can use it. If you make an item someone else might like, sell it on the market. The could be a use of only a handful of currency and you've made a huge profit, or you've invested a huge amount of currency and want to keep the item for your trouble.

This is true.

Your best course of action if you don't like shitty RNG, is not to play PoE. There are so many layers of RNG in crafting and such that you are extremely unlikely to make any items worthwhile. "Rich" players simply have an abundance of currency and nothing better to do than use it up trying to make items. Crafting is overwhelmingly negative in expected value and return on investment. But when you have GG gear and 72 exalted, why not try to make an upgrade? What else are you going to do?

I can't really speak for RMTers and botters. I don't believe anyone is manually playing 18 hours a day since day one to build these troves of wealth.

All that top-tier stuff is done with RMT. A chinese business somewhere (probably multiple) run dozens of bots 24/7 and sell hundreds of exalts and eternals to rich nerds. Those rich nerds use ets and exes to craft GG items.

It's still a net loss of value. They just don't care, because they didn't have to GRIND for it.

And this is not some joke or theory. Watch the streamers. They buy eternals ON VIDEO and proceed to craft crazy items. All the top players do this, and they have to, because the RNG in this game is absolutely insane.

Hi

I have corrupted about 3 things and 2 of them did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING= BULLSHIT.
the 3rd is a portal gem but I figure portal gem probably has nothing programmed for it to be corrupted with so that ones moot.

UP THE CHANCE OF SOMETHING HAPPENING PLEASE GGG

Also lets get some silly vaal orb corruptions in there: like it makes the weapon/gear into another weapon/gear( ex: sword becomes axe with everything else the same) or adds a MTX for free(but of course can't be removed)...

cheers

How so? How do we have so many Tabula Rasas and six links? I see them daily in trade chat, and of all sorts.

Botters be making 10,000 fusings a day.

Botters be selling those fusings to everyone else.

Everyone else be making six links, very slowly.

Unless...GGG just puts them in our inventories...:O

It would be practically impossible for a single person to play a single video game, especially one like Path of Exile, for more than eight hours a day without taking a long break. However, I bet there might be a few "trust fund kids" that go on and on like this. I am also willing to bet that they almost always go in full groups at all times to maximize their returns on time input.

It is a net loss, as most players just don't have the ability to craft and get something back by the time they use their currency. That's why the only option is to trade for items that are made by those who have nothing better to do. They have 999 exalts and plenty of time to make another six link while they try to sell the three they already have. They know that someone else will farm alts from Merveil and then trade with someone else for Chaos, then another for exalts, and then up to them. It's just how it is.
Vaal orb is not for gear. It's much better for rerolling bad maps. Cheaper than chaos, can give +1 to map lvl, roll 8 mods or make maps unindentified. Only downside is if your build can't play every mod in the game, cuz sometimes the mods will be very hard.

Also godly in upgrading lvl19/20 gem to 20/21 (only gems that won't need quality)

but... don't spread the word, i need to buy more vaals first
