My current DPS with the below gear is 31.8K with Herald of Ash and Hatred and 20.5K without either. This is with only a 5L and no quality gems. I did get lucky with a couple good deals on claws (30c+5 regret for a ~280 pDPS one and 12c on a 260 pDPS one). The darn body armor cost me 30c just for the base and I had bad luck linking it (over 200 fuse for the 5L). Otherwise, pretty cheap set up. My only issue is I tend to run out of mana on occasion after re-speccing out of Mind Drinker node in conjunction with increasing my attacks per second. I might re-spec into it or mebbe even try for slower claws. If getting the colors wouldn't be a pain, I'd swap faster attacks gem with increased crit damage.

If you are having mana issues I will run a low level clarity gem instead of 'Herald of Ashes '. You can also spec a couple of points near the start of shadow for majar mana boast. If things get really desperate swap out your hatred for a high level clarity and that should help :)

What bugs me, too, is the use of auras. I can easily maintain Hatred + Herald of Ashes AND Herald of Thunder for example. I have no trouble with mana thanks to Soul Raker passive. Is this just me? Im just curious^^

I can actually run a herald of ice with my ashes and Hatred but I do find that I 'run out of mana' once in a blue moon and I did not like that, I prefer having a massive reserve mana where there is no chance of running out of mana. You get to a point where the extra dps doesn't really matter too much. I think 30k+ dps ( AOE ) is enough to clear most level 77 and 78 pretty quick.

I remember in 1.2 where I pushed my dps to 82k dps (AOE) and to be honest it was only slightly faster for clearing and reflect damage did alot of damage to me.

Should we be using Dual Strike or Double Strike for single target?
What level should we get all of our skills to? I'm never sure if I'm going too far with them and making them harder to use with mana costs, etc.

I did some switching around of gear, and getting an amulet with some flat +mana and a tiny bit of mana regen seems to have fixed my problem. I'm now up to 36.6K tooltip DPS and still only on a 5L with no quality gems. I am thinking of just going for more life/evasion/move speed on the tree at this point even though I'm playing in Torment, i.e. SC. I can still get more DPS if I upgrade a claw and/or eventually get the 6L. Like you were saying in your previous posts, DPS beyond ~30k probably won't help clear speed much. Move speed though makes a big difference.

I do wish I had my claw in Standard league to use on this char. I paid a fortune for it back in the Domination league for a Frenzy Claw/Shield character.

You really shouldn't need a separate skill for single target with this build. His suggestions are just for leveling. I found leveling my char with Molten Strike to be easier than using Dual Strike and I really didn't need separate single-target/AOE skills at all even while leveling. Reave or Static Strike probably would work just as well. I switched to Dual Strike once I took Vaal Pact, somewhere in the 60s.

Also, you shouldn't have to worry about leveling your skill gems for this build. Any mana issues you might encounter should be easily fixable via tree or gear. You may need to rely some on mana pots while leveling though. Shouldn't be a big deal.

I run Herald of Thunder not for dps reasons, but to pull monsters and to crash pots and stuff. So mainly an issue of convenience.

I recommend using double strike and reave until you get melee splash in Act 2 Norm but if you slot
your dual strike from the beginning when you do change it won't be under levelled.

I guess you can just go dual strike for single attack and Reave for AOE.
I'm lvl 68 at the moment and loving the build and playstyle.
I would like to get some feedback on my current gear and skills.
