First use of the vaal orb for me. I think it went pretty well :)

Add twice MORE normal damage.
Now try to get that implicit mod on a better quiver and you have won.

NOOOOOo thats what I want on my quill rain - MORE COC DAMAGE
I knew a friend who made fake bids to his other friend, idk. But yeah Standard has crazy buyers so..

So Vaal orbs on rare items, has anyone seen anything else happen than a change of implicit or simply nothing happening?
Like suffixes/affixes disappearing or the item simply becoming white (or even turn in a unique)?

Got lucky on my Quill, now gonna vaal every usable quiver I can find for that third arrow :D

Wow. Glad I've been too busy with non-game events to have used a vaal orb on the first day. My first instinct was that I should buy one and use it on my spare Lioneye's Glare. "Some of which may be undesirable" plus the screenshots that GGG was posting in their roll-out gave me the impression that the worst case outcome would be along the lines of "awh, crap, I rolled my +attack speed into +stun duration." Not de-linking a 6L. Holy cow.

That's not "some of which may be undesirable." That's more accurately phrased as "some of which are devastating." There is simply no "may" about un-linking being undesirable. Hell, undesirable doesn't even describe it. Undesirable is 'we left your steak on the burner too long, it's a bit charred and I'm afraid undesirable.' Undesirable is not 'we surreptitiously put rat poison in your eggs.' The right word there was "devastating" not "undesirable."

Shame on GGG for not giving more complete information here. There is absolutely no reason they had to conceal the true nature of the downsides of using a vaal orb. It was nothing more or less than a senseless bloodletting of their own loyal customers to do that.

All that said -- the vaal orb is really neat. I can't wait to use it as a super-chance on leveling gear, or gamble with them on a otherwise trashy uniques. There really was no reason to pussy-foot around the downsides here. The upside of being able to potentially add a seventh godly mod to your items, or chaos some powerful mods on your leveling gear... that's enough to justify the downside.

Well, my first use gave me:

I'm kinda satisfied with it. Still had a good laugh in this thread. :>

im trying to get +1 frenzy charge for my build - i'd love to get 2 or 3 more in total...oh my GOODNESS that would be amazing.
This thread is comedic gold from top to bottom. I am the first to complain when GGG does something wrong, but blaming them for Vaal Orbs being bad game design? Really?

All I see here is people go: "Hm, there is this unpredictable item with random outcomes in a known hardcore game. Better use it on my incredibly valuable best possession first!"

Seriously? Go test 20, 50, 100 of them on other items before you even consider using it on something good. Where is the problem with that?

When I see that someone has the resources to own a 6l Voltaxic, but not the brains to think for a solid 10 seconds before ruining it, then I am actually not so sure anymore wether to laugh or cry.

The game design itself is ok if too. You can still use it very well on certain midgame items and turn them into something special. Or you take a big gamble on something actually good. Whatever suits your understanding of risk and reward.

The risk/reward calculation skills shown by some here actually show who is a good player and who is not. Because this is the very essence of skill to calculate such properly.

GGG did not market the vaal orb as a dangerous item-destroyer orb. They marketed it as an "oh look at these weird affixes/sockets that you got on that item that you couldn't get from any other orb" orb. Couple that with the already-disclosed downside that it locks your item from further currency use, there was really no reason for anyone to suspect that using a vaal orb could be even worse than accidentally scouring their gear.
