Open Letter to Qarl, regarding topics discussed in RMT thread
"I wasn't playing strictly self-found, but I'd still say 76. This is because I realized that maps are not gated by trading, but by partying; I joined a group, and paid fees when asked (although I think I got a great deal). You might still consider that some form of "trade," but the point is that the ability of parties to split map rolling costs is far greater factor behind the gating of high maps than trading could ever hope to be. Didn't stay with the group very long. Proof-of-concept, really. I'm not really a self-found guy, but I definitely prefer solo. " So, you didn't access content with your orbs, but with other peoples orbs. Its the same as if you would trade for maps or for orbs. Your experience is that of an hitchiker: travelling is cheap and easy, I sometimes chip in for gas, but that's it. No, you practically cant create a high map pool with only self-found orbs, except by playing several thousands of hours (grindign faceroll, non gated content till you puke), which is out of the question for 99.9% players. I reached tier 71 self-found, where I run out of chisels and alc. Maps are primarily gated by trading, not by partying, because someone has to roll them, right? "If by "someone" you mean one individual person, then no. In the context of map rolling... Trading = "I just found this thing which isn't a Chaos, let's see how much Chaos I can convince another person, who is most likely sane of body and mind, and also probably rolling maps as well, to give me in exchange for it." Partying = "Lets take all of our Chaos Orbs and multiply their effectiveness by about 6. Depends on which math you use. Definitely more than triple." I want to thank everyone, especially OP and devs, for their posts. This has been a good read. I don't really have anything to comment or add at this point, just enjoying the conversation.

" try it in 5 days exercise has great educational and eye-opening value! P.S.: chisels suck yolo highest map right now or to farm 4 of them main dilemma of solo sf and you have to decide before rolling map because you for sure won't use 20 of them after the fact pull neon and reach lvl 90 in a week! @Scrotie, you are using your experience of playing other peoples maps with other peoples orbs, as a basis to dismiss the experience of many of us, who have actually grinded the grind, from 66s up to 78s... A bit weak, innit?
A funny note: if all players of PoE would want to play maps, nobody would be able to sustain them, because there wouldn’t be enough orbs to get around. The same goes for top-tier crafting. " If everyone was playing as groups, this could be sustainable I think, but otherwise clearly not. Also poor map management is also the cause for many people for having a hard time sustaining low/mid maps/ SSF is not and will never be a standard for balance, it is not for people entitled to getting more without trading.

" Maybe if you would run in a optimal 6-party. But it would mean that nobody would have an individual map pool. Path of Communism :P When night falls

" Probably, that would make perfect sense to be honest : if non-optimal groups in such a context could sustain their map pool, that would mean that optimal groups could do it with ease, which GGG probably doesn't want, but anyway we're only speculating at this point, that's too far from "reality" ^^". The top map layer being reserved to optimal players only does not seem surprising/unfair to me. If also fits what GGG seems to be aiming at. SSF is not and will never be a standard for balance, it is not for people entitled to getting more without trading. Last edited by Fruz#6137 on Feb 28, 2014, 5:14:26 PM
