[1.0.6] ★ The Chaos-Trapper ★ (Poison Arrow-Trap / EB / IR / MoM / >10k aoe dps)


Introduction

Welcome to my new guide „The Chaos-Trapper“ (high DPS Poison Arrow-Trap/EB/IR/MoM). Here I will show the build behind a damage over time-Trapper wich uses the Poison Arrow combined with trap, Firetrap, Coldsnap-trap for cc and Vurneabilty for absurd amounts of Damage.

I came up with this idea after reading the patchnotes. Poison Arrow got buffed with the 1.0.6 patch:

„Poison Arrow's damage has been increased at higher levels. It now does roughly 35% more damage at gem level 15“.

So why using the combination of Poison Arrow and Trap!?!?
The answer is very simple. Poison Arrows damage can only be increased by a few stats like gemlevel, projectile damage and so on (more information @ important facts about Poison Arrow chapter). By combining it with a trapgem, we can benefit from all trapdamage nodes in the passive tree and from trapdamage stats from our gear. Thereby we can create a devastating poison cloud, which kills almost everything in a few seconds!

This character is built around Poison Arrow, therefor I will summarize some important facts about the skillgem and the supported skillgems we use to obtain very high AoE DPS (reference http://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/Poison_Arrow):


Important facts about Poison Arrow:

“Debuff: A Poison Arrow cloud causes a damage over time debuff to any enemy that enters its AoE. This debuff will cause chaos damage life degen until the debuff timer runs out. The timer will reset if an enemy is still inside the poison cloud. “

„Projectile Damage: Passive nodes and gems (such as Slower Projectiles) that increase projectile damage will increase both the damage on hit and the area of effect damage. “

„Concentrated Effect: Concentrated Effect will decrease the size of the AoE and increase its damage. However, due to the nature of the skill and the wording of its modifiers, the damage increase will not appear on the tooltip.”

I did some testings and recorded videos from killing hillok in 3 situations:

1. with Point Blank and facetanking him. Killtime: 3,06 secs
2. with Point Blank and maxrange from player to him. Killtime: 3,02 secs
3. without Point Blank and facetanking him. Killtime: 3,08 secs

The smalldifferences are because my timemeasurement options are limitied.
So there is no significant change with or without Point Blank. So the conclusion is:
Point Blank does not work with the Poison Arrow Trap combination!!



The Gems:

In a 6l Bow:
Poison Arrow: The level of the Poison Arrow gem is the most important stat of the build. The maximum level you can achieve is lvl 26. You want to use a Bow with +1 all gem levels +2 bow gem levels and the supportgem Empower(lvl3), which gives you +2 all active gem levels and +1 level from the +1 allgems Bow. With lvl 26 your Poison Arrow does a flat 789.6 AoE cloud dps. Quality 20 is nice, because it gives you 10% AoE radius.

Empower: level 2 gives +1 to all active skillgems, which is very important for our dps. The gem level is increased to level 3 from + 1 all gem levels from the Bow. In the end it gives you +2 to all active skillgems

Slower projectile: Gives us 27% increased Projectile Damage. Quality adds 10%. So a 20/20 gem gives 37% increased Projectile Damage!!! Nice!

Concentraded Effect: Does a tons of damage, but it will not appear to the tooltip!!! Quality is not necessary.

Increased Area of Effect: To compensate the reduced Area of Effect radius from concentraded effect and to increase our poisoned area

Trap: Oh yeah, that’s the most important support skillgem, because by using a trap gem, we can benefit from all trap-damage passive points and gearstats and increase our Poison Arrow to become a devastating poison cloud, which kills almost everything in a few seconds!

In a 5l Bow you should get rid of the Slower projectile gem.


Other gemsetups:
Cold Snap + Elemental proliferation + Multitrap + Reduced Duration (preferred in Deerstalker (provides lvl 11 trap gem). The three coldsnaptraps trigger instant and freezes everthing. This is the best form of crowd control you can use.

Firetrap + Chance to Ignite + Elemental Proliferation + Increased Burning Damage (+ Fire penetration if you got a 5l Carcass). Adds a nice amount of damage

Grace + Clarity + Reduced Mana + Vurneability

Cast When Damage Taken (lvl1) + Molten Shell + Endurance Cry + whatever

Keystones:
Eldritch Battery
We need a high manapool to sustain the 160 mana Poison Arrow trap costs and to use Mind over Matters sucessfully.

Iron Reflexes
We will run grace and wear ev/es gear, so with Iron Reflex we get a nice amount of defence stats.

Mind over Matters
30% damage taken from mana is very nice, because we don’t have access to many lifenodes. This is absolut necessary to run highlevel maps.

We also pick up almost every
- % Chaos damage node
- % Damage over time node
- % Trap damage node
- % increased projectile damage

The rest of the points will be spend into %Life, some %Mana nodes and 15% reduced mana reserved nodes



The Gear

Weapon
This is the most important part. As I said before you want to have a Bow with +1 all gem levels +2 bow gem levels stats to get +3 Level to your Poison Arrow. You can use it with 4 links, but with 5 or 6 links you will increase your damage a lot!!! Attackspeed does not matter at all. Other stats which can be nice but are not important, are accuracy and elementalresistance.

Chest
You want to use Carcass Jack, because the ev/es fits perfect in our build. Life and allresits are also nice. But the most important stats are 20% increased Radius of Area Skills and 12% increased Area Damage. Like the concentrated effect, I think the damage increase will not appear on the tooltip. I have no proof for this, but I will try to run some tests. Maybe someone has some experience about this???

Boots
I like to use Deerstalker, they give you a nice amount of movmentspeed, evasion, some life and also provide you with a trapgem lvl 11. I like to put in the coldsnap + multitrap + Elemental Proliferation + Reduced duration for a high chance to freeze everything on your screen.

Belt
Sunblast! 40% increased trap damage and 80% reduced trap duration let your traps trigger instantly! Awesome!

Helmet, Gloves, Rings and Amulet
On this slots you want to have high ev/es items with high life and resists to cap them. Other nice stats are accuracy, mana and manaregeneration and if you want iir/iiq.

Accuracy is still important because when your trap trigges, the Poison Arrow shots the enemy and can also miss. Therefore you should have a chance to hit around 80-90%. This is no problem, since you got some % acc nodes from the passivetree and some flat acc from the gear.

Stats, damage calculation and further thoughts

My actual stats (with grace and clarity up):
Offensive
Poison Arrow: 3800 chaos dps (displayed, without conc. effect and carcass bonus)
Chance to hit:89%

Firetrap: 803 dps / 46% chance to ignite / 56% burning damage

Coldsnap: 703 dps / 42% chance to freez

Defensive
Life:3400
Mana:1547
Manaregen: 103 per second
Armour:4750 (no endurance charges)
Estimate physical damage reduction: 34%
Chance to evade: 5%
Elemental resistance: all capped @ 75
Chaos resistance:-57%


Damage calculation
When the gems hit lvl 20, my poisoncloud damage will be around 4000 damage. There the concentrated effect gem (+69%AoE dmg) and carcassjack (+12% AoE dmg) are not displayed in the tooltip.

4000 * 0,81 = 3240 + 4000 = 7240 damage

So every mob who stands in the poison cloud gets the 7000 damage dot. If you now cast Vurneability (40% increased dot damage):

7240 * 0,4 = 2896 + 7000 = ~ 10.000 damage

So every Poison Arrow trap you throw does ~ 7000 damage to every enemy infected with the debuff. When you cast additionally Vurneability, your damage rises up to ~ 10.000 damage!!!

Further thoughts
I am not sure if Vurneability or Temporeral Chains is the curse of choice. Maybe it would also be nice to wear a Doedre's Damning Ring, to cast both curses for a hardcore damage boost.

Want to do some tests if Increased Duration will increase the damage of the poison cloud

I want to try to run with Shock Nova + Trap + Multitrap + Elementalprolf instead of the Firetrap to shockstack the enemeys.

I also added a Remote Mine gem to my Poison Arrow setup instead of Slower Projectiles. This improves your damage to the absolute high end number, but the mechanic of a remote mine + trap is in my opinion not playable and enjoyable.

I did not level this character with this skilltree, I actually respecct for the costs of 40 regrets after patch 1.0.6 :) But I think you can leveling it easly by using firetrap + poison arrow (in a bow, I think its to mana expensive to link it with trap while leveling and not having EB) and maybe using Bear trap for singletarget.

The other way would be speedleveling with Infernal blow and facebreaker or spectral throw.
But I onced leveled a trapper character and it was really funny to do so, the only downside were bosses, because the singletarget dps was low.

If you want, I can make a skillprogresse for leveling and including some supportgem choices for leveling!?
