[1.xx] Islidox's Build tips/critique section for Rangers

Quick Update - I updated my own phys/crit/evade build by adding a skill and support gem section and put the major walls o' text behind spoilers. Also updated Build 7 on the front.

Figured I'd post a build I have been thinking about here since I am a total newbie and looking to maybe get some feedback. I'm currently bit over 40 and I am going for a life/evasion based build with mostly physical damage. I am using RoA as my main attack and currently have been using Burning Arrow for single target, although not exactly sure what I am going to do there. I am planning to link blood magic as soon as I get some gems. I'm aware that this may be far from ideal as I have very little experience with builds, but I was mostly hoping to get some ideas about where I am going wrong.

Oh wow... Yup :)

My only question then would be whether it is worth getting point blank. I imagine it could help not one shoting yourself with offscreen pierced mobs, but I am not sure about that.

@havenrl: As I mentioned to dfscott, Rangers that hang around the Duelist/Shadow, it's best to go full evasion/dodge. However, I'm not saying you can't go IR, but you lose a good amount of bonus that's supposed to go towards your IR-armor conversion. For that amount of loss, I'd go full evasion/Ondars. Acrobatics is optional IMO, but I need to test it.

I think you're better off relying on Frenzy and supporting that with the proper supports (e.g. Added Fire Damage, Weapon Elemental Damage) and scaling off of physical damage, which Elemental Hit doesn't. Going phys/ele doesn't really have an impact on evasion as both types of reflect can be evaded/dodged.

Thanks for the comments Islidox.

Yeah, going to keep with full evasion following your build, but deffo going for full phys / crit build now, I just need to get some crit and frenzy nodes, then onto shadow tree.

Im onto farming fellshrine cruel, probably for quite a while.
Starting to feel I need plenty and gear and currency to roll for them.

@Insomniamm: Taking Point Blank can be a very good way to deal with Reflect if you're offscreen shooting a lot, but I'm not sure if it's necessary. It's only 1 point, so you can easily respec out of it if necessary.

@Gilanen: I've tried a straight Physical build with no crit and little elemental conversion, and it blowed. DPS was really lackluster and the life wasn't on par to take on Lunaris on Merc. Here's my take. If you plan on using Burning Arrow and spec into Fire/burn damage, you want to invest into armor via IR and head over to the Marauder/Templar tree for its fire/elemental damage passives. If you want to go Point Blank, you'll need to head over to the Templar Area for some Area of Effect Passives AND lots of life/armor. Point Blank can only be used if your character is very tanky as you'll be positioning yourself in close-quarters for maximum effect.

Either I just suck playing hardcore, or I'm just bad.
Just died Vaal cruel, instantly knew it was bad when the adds were up and they almost killed me, i should have insta stopped and used portal, but then i was low from the adds (2nd one's) then the beam 1 shot me, was level 48.

Around 55% ~ resists.

So much effort I put into this rangert, I simply don't like playing softcore, but might have to give it a go for end game content (maps).

Will probably take a break to reover from that one.

My last tree;

That's a good idea, giving yourself a breather every now and then.

As far as builds go, this verges on the veneer of being Glasscannon without being like true glass. You have lots of DPS, but due to the shittiness of Dexeterity we'll always be boned compared to Str/Int characters. And that's a reality I'm hoping will change someday when the devs decide to revamp the basic game mechanics. (So yea, not HC-friendly, especially with crits against reflect.)

After the ranger tree revamp I can't seem to grab Eldritch Battery in a reasonable way anymore.
So I'll try to pump mana pool and mana recovery rate as much as I can now.
Build will be light on HP this time around but adding quite some ES on top of it (using hybrid gear Eva/ES mostly except for a full Eva chest).
Theory build atm:

Now my question:
What's the best config 5L or 6L for single and AoE attacks to keep mana consumption per shot low?
Trying to get by w/o Mana Leech gem here whle running Clarity ofc
If you're leaving PoE, chances are I'll rezz you as my minion! MWHAHAHAH

Islidox seeing as you have put much more time into your thread than my own, I decided to let that die and post here instead.

Well done on your build. It was different than what I had posted initially but I have had second thoughts on my build. I've incorporated yours into mine with a few different points here and there.

Heres my build:

As far as socketing gems I have followed your way as well, even though I am pretty sure my sheet DPS is lower than when I simply used WED/Added Fire.

I have to use that shitty diamond ring to have enough mana to keep going on. What are you doing about your mana issues? Thats my only problem with this build. I want to go BM, but then I lose DPS on my split, and lose a lot of health quickly by shooting it. I found mana leech helps greatly, so I am going to have to gimp my gear to make sure I have at least 4% total with talents to get by.

I also use a Seething Hybrid flask, and a Hybrid flask in place of a mana flask (so 2 hybrids overall). I've found this helps a lot with mana problems, and it obviously heals life as well.

I'm still leveling but once I reach my build posted above I don't think I'll have any survivability problems. Stuff simply dies so fast that my leech spams my health back up. So far, loving this build.

(Except all the stat nodes I have to add, damn Decoy totem requires too much STR -__-)

Just some input from a fellow crit-ranger.

Should I just drop the added fire DMG gems in both places and go BM gems instead? Then I can run Hatred/Haste/Purity (maybe one more, say determination or vitality) JUST on my mana. Then grace wrath and anger on HP.

What do you think?

Let me know. Thanks. Also any critique is welcome on my gear choice. :)
