Inventory Mangement

Having played Diablo II and Titan Quest, the one problem I have with grid-based inventories is that there are times when you have an entire row empty because most everything is 2-4 high, and 5 high items being pretty rare. this means that I technically have the space to pick up 1-by's, but I can't because the space is all horizontal, and thus the items need to be 'by-1s instead.

Can we please be given the option to spin items 90-degrees so they fit in the pack better?

perhaps they could just have the option to purchase extra inventory pouches in the cash shop for those that love to horde stuff :D!!
He did it!
Because that does nothing to alleviate the stated issue? More packs means that you have more space that things would be able to fit in, but still can't because items are of fixed orientation for no good reason.
I would be willing to bet that the space:size dilemma was created intentionally to force players to be more selective. It would be easy to allow more picked-up items, or make them fit better (such as larger bag, or everything being 1x1), but then there are no decisions to be made about what to carry to the vendor, and no judgement on what is worth your time and space.

First in the credits!
In Titan quest immortal throne there was an interesting feature that made the inventory replace every item to maximise the free space. Could be interesting to have this cause I don't think playing tetris with the inventory is a good idea.
That's not what the Titan Quest auto sort feature does. It simply does inventory tetris for you, and badly in that there are instances where you organizing your gear yourself can get you to pick up one more thing.

@Whiteboy: Maybe, but considering that grid inventories are generally supposed to represent volume rather than weight, I find it a poor choice not to have the inventory properly act like a pack or similar object storage.
I think rotating items is a good idea. A 1x4 item should and would fit into a horizontal row of 4 spaces, and you should be able to adjust as needed, especially if there are items like the Horadric Cube that are effectively mandatory inventory items.
New here, and obviously haven't read everything yet, but it seems like the skill gems take up single inventory spaces. If you find more gems than you have sockets, they'd fill up the space nicely. Although I don't really like the thought of the extra inventory maintenance required by storing gems in items you want to sell just to save space, and then taking the gems out before selling the junkers.
Seems like most weapons take up 6 squares (bows,two-handers)which does limit the space but I also believe it is intentional, bags will most likely be micro items (which I always hate). I've always wondered why clubs and staves are always angled in games like this (aside from Torchlight) but then who sticks a staff in bag anyway.

Inventory will always be issues in games with lots of drops but it would be nice to see PoE take a bit different route like single line top to bottom for two-handers.
"The Thread Killer" I kill threads dead.
Or they could just add a boxes used limit.

IE you have 64 1x1 boxes, a weapon takes up 2x3, so there is -6 boxes and so on.
