Content Update 1.0.1 Video Preview

I know why they want to call it expansion (new hype for the game, new customers), but it doesnt make that term correct.
An expansion implies that you can decide to play the original version without using the expansion.
This is hardly going to be the case for PoE. There is only going to be one version, which is getting a content update.

Its a content update, and regardless of how big that content update is, calling it expansion is wrong unless you can play the original version without tapping into the expansion.

WoW vanilla can still be played individually. Burning crusade can still be played individually. Diablo 2 can still be played individually. Diablo 2 - LoD can still be played individually.
Thats what expansions are. They expand upon the original game, but you can also decide to play just the original version.
This is not going to be the case for PoE, so stop calling it an expansion.

New charges will make everyone look like a christmas tree, gg.

Just a minor aesthetic annoyance. Everything else looks neat.

The Charges now look like the old fuse charges on explosive arrow.

Remember when of of the Art devs said: "If you have several Auras active you character looks like a Christmas tree, we didn't want that"

So why are Christmas tree Charges ok but Auras are not? ;D

Oh, so Diablo 3, World of Warcraft & SimCity (2013) aren't releasing upcoming expansions?
Or perhaps you're going to say "it doesn't count as an expansion unless you make people buy it"?
Looks like you're starting to get it. D3 and WoW release large content updates also, and they call them exactly what they are. Did it never occur to you that there was a reason that nearly every game has used specific terms for specific things for all this time?

The increase in content with next year's POE "expansion" is likely to be in line with around the amount of content added when moving from open beta to launch (except for the class). I think that's a pretty reasonable update, totally justifiable to call it an expansion. "It's only an expansion if they make you pay money for it" is a totally arbitrary definition. Why shouldn't a free game be allowed to refer to a major addition of content as an expansion?

Are the damage over time changes included in this patch like was stated? (viper strike, poison arrow, etc)

Chris don't change Purity. don't add new resist auras there no point no one going to use them u up the cost on all auras if the cost to run them where lower then it would be ok but like this there no point your add 3 new auras that will sit in people stash.

what you need to do is add something to up max resist so you don't die to elemental reflect in 1 shot not aura that cost 40% mana that no good..

Swap out the max res aura for the area you're in. Wasn't aware Purity was that high on the chopping block. There are still lots of bigger problems to fix.
yeah sure, lets use 30 chromatics before every map.

Totally agree that an expansion can be for free.
However, im going to quote myself here:

Whether an expansion costs something or not is irrelevant.
The definition of an expansion is that it is a relatively big addition to the original game, but that you can also play the original game without using the expansion.
This is not going to be the case with PoE. Using that term is incorrect.
Sure they could go through the hassle to offer two different versions of the game for download, one that only goes up to act 3, and one that has act 4, but that would be ridiculous in a free to play game.
This kinda cements that a free to play game indeed CANNOT have an expansion, atleast not an ordinary one.

A new term needs to be coined, or you can just call it big content update.

Sigh, 3 days ago i zoomed on my character by mistake and noticed how great the charges currently look. They're distorting the scene behing them, acting like bubbles of liquid, i thought it was nicely done and very detailled...

And now they change them to make them look like they're coming out of some star wars game from last century. :(

Because in gaming terms, it isn't an expansion, Its a content update. Again, the size makes no difference. WoW has released very large content updates. Everquest 2 released a free content update once that had a new race, new home city, and an entire 1-20 starting area. They didn't call it an expansion, because it was just a large free content update.

Every single example you gave required an addition purchase.

The new charges also feel like an unnecessary change to me. I'm not sure why this was done, since I feel they look a lot worse now, and their visibility isn't improved anyway since people just look to the top corner to count their buffs.

Thank you!

New charges look ridiculous!
