[GUIDE] The Tri-nuke -version1.3

I have returned to Path of Exile, and I have developed a new build that is awesome.

Introduction

I wanted to make a lightning-based character because I already have a fire-themed one and let's face it - owning with one element can get monotonous. Anyway, it took me a while to figure out, but I have come up with this new build. Its called The Tri-nuke.

The point of this build is to nuke shit. According to my math, this build's nukes can reach 125-150k+ (a shit ton of damage). Don't worry, I'll tell you how to reach that soon. First let me put this into perspective. At level 79 I was 1-shotting pretty much any rare mob in low level maps (omitting a few mod combinations). Even the mighty Drought-maddened Rhoa fell victim to the Tri-nuke 1 shot.

The Tri-nuke is best done with a Scion, but Witch and Shadow can also pull it off well.

Why build Tri-nuke?

End-game build highlights -

-74,000 Burst DPS
-around 3k Health
-over 2k Mana
-level 15+ AA

Note: Tooltip DPS for your traps will be extremely inaccurate. The burst DPS is derived from the following formula:

6t x [((min tooltip + max tooltip)/2) x (1 + ((Crit/100) x CritM/100)]

Where "t" is the number of tri-nukes you can throw in a second, "min and max tooltip" are the displayed damage values for LW trap in your tooltip, and "Crit and CritM" values are your Critical strike chance and Critical strike multiplier respectively.

Pros:

-Insane burst damage
-Highly mobile playstyle
-Immunity to reflect and lightning thorns
-Not reliant on charges to be effective
-Able to sustain high level AA

Cons:

-Cannot tank big hits very well
-Minimal sustain. Will struggle in half regen maps - no regen is a no go
-Must invest heavily in mana
-Difficult to cap resistances
-Takes practice to use effectively in some environments

The following videos showcase my ownage of Docks and Thicket Map respectively. After all, why say what I can simply show? Any relevant information regarding the context of the video should be in the video description - enjoy.

I will now provide a few links to the variant Tri-nuke builds below:

PVP Core Build

PVP Final Build

PVE Core Build

PVE Final Build

Bandits:

Normal: Help Oak or Help Alira (your choice)
Cruel: Kill all
Merc: Kill all*

*In merciless, you may decide that helping Oak or Alira is a better choice for certain PVE variants of this build. For the PVP oriented build; however, killing them all is the best choice here.

Equipment

Hat: A rare helm w/ a high life mod and 2-3 resists. Energy shield and Evasion are a bonus, but you can get by with any base type. Masks look ugly on Scion, but ev/es is probably the best fit for this build (skin recommended).

If you're loaded, go ahead and splurge on a 400+es tri res circlet. That's what I would be using if I didn't spend 90% of my currency crafting shit.

Armor: Carcass Jack. You can pull this build off just fine with a 5L armor; I'm just using crit multiplier in the 6th slot, so it is by no means required. This is a good armor for evasion / EB builds, and the bonuses to area attacks just make it better. Scion looks pretty sexy wearin' this too, so that's a bonus.

Glove: For PVP, Maligaro gloves are the only option. Try to get a high dexterity roll on them. For PVE, you may choose either Maligaro gloves or Hellbringers. Hellbringers will nearly double the mana cost of the tri-nuke;however it provides high mana as well as +1 to elemental gems which you can use to benefit Arctic armor, Conductivity, or your supporting LW. Its up to you.

Boots: Same kind of deal as with the helmet. 30 Movespeed highly recommended, but you can settle for 25. I Wish the boots I was wearing were not armor-based, but alas they are. ES on yours boots is a bonus, but of course not required. I get by just fine with this pair.

p.s. For the love of god, please do not get deerstalkers thinking you need them since this is a trap build. Okay, those boots can be useful during the leveling process, but for endgame content get yourself something decent.

Weapons: Divinarius is optimal for PvE content. The increased AOE and mana restoration on kills is pretty nice, especially since you'll be killing pretty much everything. In the future, I will try to obtain better daggers that I can use for owning PVP, but for the sake of keeping things simple, Divinarius is a good option. 1ex a pop puts them in pretty much anyone's price range as well.

PVP Variant:
Spoiler
Not like anyone can afford it, but you have two options that would work much better than Divinarius. First is dual wands: 100+Combined Spell, 90+Spell Crit, 18+Cast speed, Maybe some mana regen... The second option is two Kris (the 80% crit chance knives) with stacked spell damage, crit, and mana that can surpass Divinarius.

PVE Variant for the Rich:
Spoiler
Get these badass fuckers here -

You can probably 1-shot anything with 7 Power Charges holding two of these babies. Best PVE caster weapon by far obviously. You can reach probably more than double the burst DPS listed in this guide if you wanna go this route. PM Me and I'll share this build with you since it is a bit different than the two above.

Belt: Life, resists, armor and STR is ideal. You don't need anything amazing - something like what I have linked will work just fine and you can get a similar piece for 1-3 ex.

Alternative: Sunblast belt would also work, but it robs you of your already limited ability to survive. I would recommend a rare belt like this, but Sunbelt works - it will even provide you with higher DPS.

Amulet: Life, Dual Crit, Spell Damage. Energy shield, mana, and resists are all bonuses. Cast speed can be nice for your mobility, but isn't worth the extra price that spell damage / cast speed ammys go for. Cast speed has no affect on your Tri-nukes ability to nuke shit.

Note: For the PVP build variants, you will need either a Jade or Turquoise Ammy. Well, Onyx could work too, but you will be stuck with level 18 green aura gems.

Ring 1: You'll need one Dream Fragments for sure. Mana, mana, mana, mana, mana, mana......

Ring 2: Use this slot to fill any gaps in your defenses. You want a ring like mine, except with also Mana and Energy shield on it. I'm still in the middle of crafting it, so I can't show you exactly what that looks like. Just pretend there is some mana on it for now.

PVE Itemization Variant
Spoiler
If you would prefer to roll with two rare rings, that is certainly an option. If you have an additional ring with Life, mana regeneration, and resists, consider substituting it in for the Dream Fragments. Wear an Alpha's Howl now instead of the rare hat. You sacrifice quite a bit of mana from es conversion, but gain +2 gem levels and reduced mana reservation as well as resistance to chill. If you go this route, there are also some nice ele status effect nodes you can pick up near Ondor's Guile.

Skill Gem Setup
a.k.a "How to Nuke"

The Core 5L of this build is as follows:
Lightning Warp - Trap - Multiple Traps - Lightning Penetration - Conc. Effect

With this setup, you have what I like to call "The ability to throw portable ownage upon thy foes". It's hard to describe, so I'll try my best. What basically happens is let's say you're on the docks. There is a pack of mobs - lets say 20 white trash with a big bad rare in the middle. Maybe some blues in there just to keep it interesting. So you're on the docks and you see these mobs. Wouldn't you know it: They're totally talkin' shit about you. Naturally, you're going to be upset about this and want them to die. That is an understandable and expected reaction, but don't worry. This is where I finally tell you how to cope.

Step 1. Curse enemies with Conductivity or Ele Weakness
Step 2. Aim at their leader and throw a Tri-nuke
Step 3. Screen Dies

It's that simple. In less than a second, the Tri-nuke detonates resulting in 6 mini warp novas. 3 mini novas will hit a split-second before the other three, meaning that shocks will increase the damage of the second wave of mini novas.

At level 78, my nukes COULD hit as high as 110k. Once you have your gems leveled and maybe a couple more DPS nodes, this easily pushes 130k+!

Note: This figure is assuming monsters have 42% lightning resist and are NOT under the effect of any curses. Monsters that have lower than 42% lightning resist and/or have lets say for example conductivity cast upon them will experience twice as much damage. Ask Drought-maddened Rhoa what that feels like =].

For supporting skill, I am using, well, once again, lightning warp. It's a bit different this time because instead of using it to nuke, I'm using it for mobility (and a bit of side-dps to finish off stranglers).
Lightning Warp (prefer quality) - Reduced Duration - Faster Casting - Life leech

Not only is this good for moving around and finishing off enemies, it also is useful in making the tri-nuke look more epic. After tossing the tri-nuke, use LW into the middle of the group of enemies that is about to die. Your tri-nuke now looks 15% more intimidating. Note: This has no effect on gameplay besides positioning and looking cool.

As a bonus, using LW to warp around is a good way to get around the mana drain penalty on Arctic Armor.

Speaking of which, Arctic Armor is a godsend for this build. Not only will it help your mobility with a quality version, it also helps you not die to things such as voidbearers. I'm not going to go into a rant about how amazing Arctic Armor is, I've done that before and if you need convincing just go read my sorc guide [1339 Fireball Shotgun / CI]. You're EB, use Arctic armor.

Auras

The Auras you use will depend on if you're using the PVE or PVP variant. In both cases, the aura with the most priority is Clarity. With the recent aura changes, this aura is godly on any caster.

For your second aura I would recommend Grace for PVE or Haste for PVP. It is possible to cram purity in as well, more so for the PVE variant, but it is certainly possible in both. Another option to consider is linking up Empower to the two auras of your choice.

__

Anyway, I'll work on this guide more later. I wanna get back to tri-nuking some monsters and getting that sweet loot and exp for now. Any questions, just shoot me a message.

Regarding why you should not use Elemental Equilibrium with this build:

Spoiler
A lot of people are asking if it is a good idea to use EE with this build. Afterall, it wouldn't be too difficult to use a different element prior to delivering the tri-nuke, right? It's true that EE is nearby and it would be simple to incorporate (thought I would personally choose not too, just because using other elements goes against my lightning theme); however, after considering this more carefully I have come to a decision. It is a TERRIBLE idea to use EE with this build, and let me explain why.

The way EE works is that when an enemy is hit with an element, they become resistant to it but weak to the others. People are/were under the impression that setting up the tri-nuke with EE would increase it's damage greatly; however, this is not the case. To understand why this isn't the case, we must first consider the properties of a tri-nuke.

When we break it down, we find that the tri-nuke is just a series of LW traps in a straight line. When thrown into a group of monsters, it detonates - causing each trap to LW from it's position onto a nearby target that is at least the minimum L-warping distance. Taking this into account, we see that the tri-nuke is composed of 6 separate "hits" if you will. These hits are not guaranteed to take place at the same time. In fact, they most likely won't.

Using EE would increase the damage of the FIRST HIT of the enemy. All subsequent hits take on the adverse effect. Not only is this bad by itself, the fact that hits 4 through 6 of the nuke have the highest damage potential due to possible shock stacking hurts your DPS by a large margin if you're using EE. Yeah, I didn't talk about it before, but that 125K figure I mathed out for the tri-nuke isn't even accounting for shock stacking.

Long story short: EE - a bad idea.

This looks promising. Can you upload a gameplay video? I want to see how awesome this looks.

Also: Could deerstalker boots be a substitute for a 5L for early levels?
Saw this in action last night. Crazy damage and looks like a lot of fun. Will definitely be my next build.
