How central is crit to this concept? Every fireball build I see is centered on the use of crit to get heavy burns going, but I was hoping more for consistent and constant hits and less big-boom. Also because I just generally find stacking crit to be a painful and tedious process though that's a personal matter.

If you play Hardcore it is a good strategy to trade the crit nodes for more life and shield nodes to boost survivability. As long as you play Softcore the question is, what alternative nodes you want to take instead of the crit ones? One might use chance to ignite instead of crits to trigger burning damage, but where do you want to put the free passive points?
Unlike a melee/bow build there are not that many auras that would be beneficial for a non-summon spellcaster , so there is no need to invest many points in aura/reduced mana reservation nodes. As a pure supporter taking fire spells doesn't make much sense either.
Cast speed? Not that many nodes around. Maybe take nimbleness with whispers of doom for dual curse, but the overall clearing speed will be worse than a fire crit build.
The point is taking crits is the best way to boost your clearing speed in softcore while still be sturdy enough to not die very often.
I took long break from, last time I was active there where still only 2 acts, and I based my first character around this guide. It has worked out very well for me. No need for great items or even a 5 link. I think that if I had started out playing builds like this I may not have needed to take a break because I got tired of grinding for gear that I needed just to progress. I have been running fireball + lmp + fire penetration + faster casting, fire trap + multi trap + increased AoE + increased burning damage, summon skeletons + spell totem, flammability, temporal chains, molten shell, and clarity (I have also been leveling up other defensive auras, I just don't use them much or at all yet) and have made it to level 60 without breaking a sweat. The reason for my link selections is that I haven't gotten a conc. effect gem, life leech, or reduced mana gem yet and I am working with what I have. Multi trap and increased AoE is overkill but it is fun.

Anyway, thanks for the well thought out guide.
I be that potion mixin', spell castin', dragon ridin' wizard. Got a 3 foot hat with a 6 foot beard, and it's only gettin' bigger. Put a staff up in my hand, and I'll shrink you down to size. All I need is a tail of a newt and some platypus eyes.
Anyone have any full gear set examples?

Imho gear examples make no sense unless the build is centered around the use of certain unique items. There are myriads of gear combinations, so what would be the point of featuring one? And which one? Leveling gear? the gear one defeated dominus? Gear one is doing 70+ maps? Best-in-slot gear for lvl90+ chars?
There are some rules you can follow: If life based get life on gear (most important mod), if CI get ES. Have your resistances maxed.
Aside from that there can be build specific recommendations (i made some in the guide), but anything more specific is not really helpful and might give someone the wrong idea like "he uses a fire res ring, so i gotta use one too".

I mainly like example of items to level with. Past that I understand gear ends up being different for everyone with a build like this.
LMP / GMP its useless if you want high DPS with FB with his AOE. So nodes for AOE + items and other stuff, one shot deals lots of dmg and aoe dmg and also chance of igniting.

*facepalm*
Dictionary.com ---- > FACEPALM ty. LMP and GMP its useless cos u take off DPS and 1 shot FB w/o it has more dps, and with the CE and IAOE gems has better solution and less mana consume. U should know that build cos u linked the witch build list....

Missed about CtI and BD supports + CD.

1) Fireball can shotgun. That means all 3 projectiles can hit 1 target for multiple damage.
2) A single FB was a build option before burning damage got nerfed from 120% over 4 seconds to 20% of the initial damage over 4 seconds. A build that was centered around spreading burning damage would use a single fireball so that the burning damage would be higher: Shotgunning with 3 fireballs yields higher single target damge, but lower burning damage as the ignition of three FB hits would override each other.
After the nerf to burning damage i highly doubt that you get better clearing speed with a build that focusses on burning damage instead of maxing the initial damage with LMP/GMP.
LMP / GMP u cant get the DPS without this gems. And the build it keeps killing bosses on that thread build. And its not for incinerating, its for killing shotting 2 times agaisnt a ref and the incinerate; if it has the status of it, will save u instead of keep shotting to that rare or unique boss and his grup. And even taht the DOT nodes and infernal mantle are a good options to try to get the nerfed sitaution.
