I sold my crafted armor for 5 ex, had around 40 GCP total after that. Wasted them all chaosing ilvl78 bow. This is the result:

btw.. that 2-4 cold dmg.. that was my last Exalt.

I am done with this.
finally got my hands on a 5L. It's lvl 53.

i'm going with the advanced method and use alts.
from the armor spreadsheet it looks the best options are Life as the prefix and a resist as a suffix?

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0ArsB7KohOhhpdHoyZzU2WVZZNXQxMDg4MVk1b0FGbkE#gid=14

70-79 is the max life value for my armors ilvl.
damn.. at ilvl 54, i get 80-89. missed by one ilvl. :(

30-35% is max resist value at my armors ilvl.

I only have 3 regals and 1 exalted.
Is this worth using up my currency on or wait for a higher lvl 5L? (I'm lvl 64 archer)

THX!

edit:
I got +87 evasion. But that shouldnt be possible with ilvl 53 armor.

From the prefixes page:
Fleet lvl42 Base Evasion Rating 61 to 80
Blurred lvl58 Base Evasion Rating 81 to 120

My armor now has the Fleet prefix but why do i have +87?
(my armor has no quality, yet)

edit2:
found out. there's another evasion mod with Fleet prefix that goes from 80-138

Here is a question.

I have a white item with a particular item level.
When I use an orb of chance on the item and attempt to roll a unique, is the item level taken into consideration as a restriction of if the unique can be rolled?
IGN: Oryas or iicycloneii or Leveiup
Im not sure how to search for my question so il just ask here. If i have a magic item with stats I like then instead of regaling it I scour then alc it will the item retain the stats it had when it was a magic item? or will it roll a new set of stats?
I still dont' understand these prefix and suffixes.. I have these two items. I know they are low rolls. If I divine them will I get a higher rolls? Also rares dont' have prefix or suffix shown how will I know the limitation of these items?

It will reroll with new stats, scouring makes it a white item and alching gives it new props

Divining them will only reroll the mods within the same range, you can't upgrade the mods on an item. With rares you will have to look up the mods on your item to see what prefixes and suffixes you likely have.

Uniques can be any item level, with a minimum item level of the base item obviously.
EDIT: wrong topic :)

Don't believe the crap about the Alterations and armor being easier. After hundreds of these i am still at square one. Armor and life... fucking impossible to land together it seems.

After typing this and saying fuck it.. i scoured it and used 2 chaos orbs.. got 81% armor and 66 life, plus 2 resists and reflecting of damage. Wish i would of done this instead of wasting hundreds on the more advanced method...

That indeed is impossible since +max hp and +armor are both prefixes! So if you follow the advanced method, you cannot get those two together before you decide to regal.

I believe one should only opt for the alterations-regal method if you want a shot at some truly phenomenal endgame gear and then probably only for certain slots. I mean, take gloves for instance. Getting the 'of grandmastery' suffix (14-16 attack speed) can be of paramount importance, as attack speed cannot roll on other 'regular' armor pieces. So by using the alterations method, you can make this mod your starting point (probably pair with either Base Max Life or 'added damage'), before you turn it into a rare.

That said, I have only rolled 'of grandmastery' 3 times in hundreds of alterations. Once it was paired with something horribly bad. The other two times the prefix was good enough to warrant the use of a regal, but the regal gave a big blank. Oh well, at least I haven't spend any exalteds on these gloves yet.
