a question about farming

so at the moment i'm level 40 and need to farm for items
would it be viable to say go back to act 1 normal and run every thing in a few hours and see how many orbs i've got?
i was thinking of doing this because i'll be killing mobs so fast that i will be able to kill 1000 mob faster than killing 200 on my current difficulty setting.

is this viable or is there a diminishing return if i farm mobs much lower in levels than me.

keep in mind that i'm only aiming for currency items.

There is a penalty. You have a safe zone of three levels, but then its a 2.5% penalty per level on amount of currency items.

This roughly represents the amount of farming speed advantage you would get if you are over-levelled, but will be very punitive if you try farming in a much lower level.

Phew, dev answer. Awesome.

I took my level 50 shadow back to the normal ledge hunting for rapiers, and found plenty of incidental currency. Anecdotal, I know, but there you go.

Huh. My mace dude is now an actual cultist of Chayula. That's kinda wild.
Thanx for the info Qarl.
Guess i'll have to find another way or just stop trying to get many orbs before i rely need them....them chaos orbs are ultra rare.

The best way is probably to twink new characters and just run Act 1 over and over :P

It's quite funny but I do tend to get more currency items on my alts than farming maps on my main...

Does this drop off at a certain point? I mean, what about the end-game maps? I think I heard that the end-game maps ilvl drops off around 70 or so? Does this mean high lvl characters are essentially worthless for farming currency since you'd be better off just starting a new char to always be behind the ilvl?
For currency penalty purposes, if you above level 63, you are treated as being level 63.

It's not QUITE profitable enough to warrant running the Twilight Strand repeatedly, but sometimes it really does seem like it.

For what it's worth, I left a character in there until level 7. Didn't really get much in the way of currency beyond a lot of transmutations and some chromatics, though.

Does the penalty apply if you are grouped with someone of the appropriate level? For example, a level 60 grouped with a level 10 in a level 10 zone.

It does penalize your "portion" of the loot. Usually when I lagspike, I see the loot pop a certain amount in sets times the number of players in game. So I assume that's what happens.

Or rather maybe it doesn't penalize you at all if there's one person in the appropriate spot.
