Death Penalty Changes in 0.11.3
yep allocation is always up to the leader...theres no complaints that can be a real reason to change that or any other allocation. u choose to join permanent or short and thus decline any logical argument u could use to say ur being shafted.
to join or not...that is the question! Finding the right death penalty is tough for any game, and from what Ive seen, this game does it better than most regardless of what the complainers may think. All the alternate systems I've seen proposed are great in theory, but would have severe problems in execution in POE. I think the devs went the right route given the other technical issues they have to deal with; its not a perfect solution, but sometimes simpler truly is better in the long run. Make it too complex, and you confuse the players that don't really feel like spending an hour just to figure out the death penalty system. The other thing that amused me was how many people missed the word "experimental" in the official notes. Its obvious that the older numbers were a bit too harsh, and its probable that the 3/8 will eventually get upped if the fears aired here prove to be true. Regardless, its clear to me that they are still trying to find a middle ground that works the best, and we just need to give them a chance to experiment and see where they settle before complaining too much.
The one idea I did see that I kinda liked was having a third league that falls somewhere in between the two existing leagues, as it could potentially deal with a number of issues, not just death penalty, that many people who want a challenge but lack the time and interest in the full hard core league. If you did that though, I would say make hard core true hardcore and have flat out permadeath on it, not just demotion to a "lesser" league. Then we can see who really is hard core and who simply wants to be. The item allocation is one that is hard to comment on fully as I have yet to party, but it seems to be that if you are going to have a allocation system, that system should genuinely cover everything more or less equally. So a full perm allocation system should in fact remove all "loot tension," because that is effectively the entire point of that level of allocation. Like the third league, there needs to be a middle option between perm allocation and full ffa, or perhaps simply make it so that the party leader can set individual choices for different types of items. Finally, all those saying that POE should be entirely hardcore, have fun not having a game because no company can support it. None of the changes I've seen in this thread should effect the hardcore leagues all that much, if at all, so I don't see the need to complain about it. The people who are truly effected are those who would play in the hypothetical middle league; those who are hard core enough to want a higher degree of challenge than most, but not to the degree that those who play on hardcore want. Those who want to simply screw around will do so without caring about these changes, and those who are truly hardcore are already in a different league. Those in the middle are the ones that GGG needs to be paying attention to when it comes to these kinds of changes, not the ones on either extreme that are going to do their own thing regardless. EDIT: I apologize if I missed any notable developments or arguments, there was no way I was going to get through 72 pages of comments in depth. I have read lots of comments but my idea to get buff that will cause "not-to-loose" experience for 1 hours after your death as best idea and since system knows to give player buff, it should not be too hard to implement.
It would work like the immortality when you zone in, but the cancel effect would not be character movement, but level up. I represent only myself, my own thought and believes. I am individual, not a representative of the community.
I am not speaking on behalf of someone else and I don't get offended by things that have nothing to do with me. 3.13 was the golden age. |

I doubt anyone will read this far but im not sure what the death penalty will change. People that die (for example) once an hour will continue to do so.
At some point that penalty is greater than the xp they earn in an hour and they stop progressing. Because the time to level increases with level, changing the penalty only moves the point at which they approach that limit. For example: Bob dies roughly every X(~15) minutes. On normal and cruel modes this is of little consequence. At level Z(~60) it starts to take a little longer to level. At level Y(~70) it becomes difficult to level. When Bob reaches level W(~75), he now takes longer to earn 15% of an xp bar, than his average time between deaths. Bob can no longer progress unless he gets lucky by having several longer than average intervals between deaths. This situation is understandably not fun, and Bob quits PoE and/or requests a reduction to the death penalty on the forums. Now a new pstch comes out reducing the penalty to 8%. Bob rejoices, all his troubles are solved!!! Bob continues to die roughly every X(~15) minutes. Now at level 75 he can progress again, although it's difficult and he still looses quite a bit of xp to death. But Bob is persistent and makes it to level 80. However, around level 80 IT TAKES ABOUT 2X AS LONG TO LEVEL AS AT 75. Now Bob takes longer to earn 8% of an xp bar, than his average time between deaths. Bob can no longer progress unless he gets lucky by having several longer than average intervals between deaths. This situation is understandably not fun, and Bob, once again, quits PoE and/or requests a reduction to the death penalty on the forums. ALMOST NOTHING HAS CHANGED, The game is not fundamentally better for Bob the death penalty nerf is just a stay of execution. Bob just sticks around for another week or so, and waits for the next death penalty nerf. Eventually the death penalty has to be reduced to nearly 0% in order for Bob to reach level 100. However by this point there are thousands of bats grinding levels faster than Bob. I'm gonna guess that Bob doesn't like that either . . .. |

Love all the changes. Thank you!

my god it's amazing how many so called gamers and Path of Exile fans are complaining about the death penalty change, death penalty was not needed in the so called "softcore league" anyway...but i agree death penalty makes things a little bit interesting...some of the times, most of the times i just log out say "F this"and go play another similar game,i work for a living and when i do choose to play a game i want to have fun not to be frustrated by the massive lose of xp...that been said i think if you are careful you can play Path of Exile without dyeing, but most of the time i don't want to concentrate 100% i just want to have fun...that's what people suppose to do when they play a game...have fun,and the death penalty was seriously denting the fun factor.
i think the easy solution for everyone is the actual creation of a softcore league where there is no death penalty, people who want to play softcore will join that league, the rest will join the other leagues that simple P.s and for god sake bring back those massive spell and aura effects back, and change the mouse cursor the one we have is god damn fugly :P Last edited by blackvampire#3091 on Jul 26, 2013, 9:50:11 AM
