I know the pros and cons of offline vs online

You can't have the best of both worlds

In the end you need to make a sacrifice

GGG chose to be online only, not only to prevent hacking/cheating but they also designed the game with multiplayer in priority, sure, you can play alone/not trade but it is not meant to be

AND THAT MOTHERFUCKING SUCKS HARD FUCKING TIME GOD DAMMIT!!!!!

I was only playing offline singleplayer games before Diablo 3 and Path of exile came out, those games forced me into online only and I'm still fucking pissed about it

yeah, yeah, its not going to change but that doesn't change that I still fucking need those games offline and every single fucking day I'm desperately hoping that both of them change their minds and a patch is released, thats the reason why I lurk both forums, I seriously almost give no fuck at all about any of the change they incorporate in each new patch

'sigh'
Spoiler

Then play another game, how hard is it?

I am sure some people that have purchased microtransactions wouldn't pay just to play this game. It's in GGG internal politics, they said they won't change it. You can read their reply to this and many other suggestions and questions here http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/36080 (it's the answer to the 29th question) and here http://www.pathofexile.com/faq (it's the answer to the 6th question).

Chris's reply to the 29th question was this

"The solo play is still played on our online servers which means there are no hacked characters because the data is stored serverside."

Which isn't a definitive yes or no, just what their current stance is. The answer to the 6th question that you linked has no relevance to the topic, being free to play doesn't justify online only if they charge 59.99 for the option like I'm suggesting. So it makes it irrelevant to this particular discussion.

Again i'm arguing that hack/dupe prevention is not a matter of unique coding or being online only, but a matter of resources. If being online only was a definitive solution then we wouldn't have seen Diablo 3 being hacked, but it's been done since closed beta. Maybe GGG has a trick up their sleeve that will prevent hacking, but I doubt it.

Take starcraft 2 for example, many people have hacked the game with things like open map vision which is gamebreaking competitively, but they're completely nullified almost immediately because blizzard has a whole team of lawyers who can leverage lawsuits to stop them dead in their tracks.

To quote agent smith regarding hacking " IT IS INEVITABLE ".

It doesn't really work like that for me, I don't play a lot of games, I just cling to something for a long time, prior to D3 and PoE was D2

When I played any other game, I was just taking a D2 break, I would always come back to it

I'm not that attached to D3 because it would need a lot of modding for the game to be enjoyable and the only reason why I even bother with it is because it as the name diablo in it

But PoE pretty much became my real D3, taking over D2, I just won't let this game go until a sequel or something

I tried to find alternatives like torchlight or (not so popular) adventures of Van Helsing, they just don't compare

so...to answer your question, yeah its really hard
