died in cruel but it's the furthest i've gone since i started playing 2 days ago!

i just had a few questions.

i think i messed up by not getting phase run and never had one drop, but was still able to run through zones fairly easily.

when leveling you said to use dual strike but i chose freezing pulse instead at the beginning, do you just level another shadow to get it? also for using fire trap should i again choose that on another shadow? i just winged it for a while until i died to black death =/. should i have had more hp nodes? or +hp max on my gear for that? now i know that i can die that quick it won't happen next time but i feel like it takes me forever to progress.

i don't know if it's because i'm still new to get game or maybe it's because i stay in zones too long. my normal a1 run goes like kill hillock, pick up freezing pulse, run all the way through and do glyph wall (should i choose viper strike from this over everything else?)/run to ledge and get the wp then do medecine chest for phase run, then farm ledge to 9, then kill brutus.

after brutus i'll run to cove and farm that for a few levels (15ish) and go kill merv. what i did on this shadow was choose crit damage and put it with viper strike (should have used it on double maybe?) i stacked armor the best i could.. never really dual wielded and went with 1h/shield the whole time. once i kill merv i would run to fellshrine ruins and farm that for a few levels then finish the rest of a2 pretty easily. is this how it is normally done? i felt okay going through it on normal and cruel but i didn't realize how quick blackdeath would kill me.

i know i wrote a lot and appreciate the time anybody has taken out of their day to read this but i'm still not entirely sure what i am doing. i followed the guide the best i could and felt i had some direction (i ended up choosing some of the life nodes because i was lacking it.. had about 900 or so when i was 33?) i know i played poorly when i died and probably should have kited blackdeath more but i didn't know he'd kill me that quick haha.

those times i'm grinding levels in fellshrine/ledge etc should i farm those a little bit more maybe until i find decent gear? i'm still entirely lost with when i should use my augmentation/trans orbs.. i know i'm asking a lot of noob questions but my goal right now is to be able to farm maps before the end of the year and i think i've progressed quite a bit.. only made 2 characters.

thank you again for your time if somebody reads all this.

Firstly, well done in getting past vaal and into cruel! :)

Yes, dual strike is useful for single target enemies but freezing pulse and fire traps are both good options for AoE. Fire trap will be effective beyond Normal Difficulty but freezing pulse tends to stop being useful past mid-cruel. Yup I tend to create other shadows to get freezing pulse and fire trap. Takes 1 min per shadow so it doesn't take too long!

Your normal pre-brutus a1 run is very typical of a race-type run so I don't see anything wrong with that! One addition you could do is perhaps slot in a space somewhere in between to kill hailrake and take phase run. I also tend to get whirling blades from the glyph wall quest to increase my escape options and hence survivability.

Your merv run seems fine as well! Doesn't matter how you link your gems as long as they're effective! Viper is probably the better option for killing merv due to her ES. Your act2 run seems fine as well. One tip I can offer is never ever neglect your HP and Resists. There's no such thing as having too much HP and take note that you suffer resistance penalties when you advance in difficulty so remember to boost them!

It's a bit tough to answer your question regarding the need to farm better gear. The simple answer is yes, but the complicated answer is not always. When you do more boss fights you will get more experience and start to get an understanding as to how much DPS/HP/Resistances you should have before fighting them. Once you know those values, you'll know if you need better gear or if you can just fight them with your existing ones.

Don't worry about feeling entirely lost regarding how to use your orbs. I was lost for a few weeks or so myself. It's completely normal.

I'm glad this guide has helped you and given you some direction :) don't worry abt it you're doing fine, you're definitely doing much better than when I first started out! My advice would be to take things slowly since you've just started. Take the time to immerse yourself into wraeclast, understand the mechanics and experiment with the different skills and builds. The time for speedrunning/racing will be later. For now, just enjoy what the game has to offer :)

Edit: If you have the time and would like to read up on some tips regarding crafting, feel free to check this out. http://bit.ly/craftpoe

Hey invalesco. When my buddy found this. I turned this Shadow into a modified build of yours.

I did more damage as a totem / fp pure crit multiplier spark / ice spear build.

But, I must say, the build is quite awesome and a lot of fun to use. Of course, the great thing about POE, are the minor tweaks to make our characters more personal, under the circumstances of items that we currently have.

I will QQ when OB starts, because I'll be losing the dagger, but it's definitely something fun to try before we get wiped.

Again, big props to you, and see you in the races.

P.s. Add me to the Throne of top 10 Shadows, 60 currently, I'll get higher.

Edit: TheRealRacer (from the 3 hour hardcore race 2 weeks ago)

As pet and victor have already mentioned, that's a very nice dagger!

But yes, the main advantage of this build is that it's very fun. It's still the most fun build i've played so far. The damage does take time, level and gear to improve though but once you level a little more and get the right gear for this build i'm sure the damage will give your former builds a run for their money! ;)

I'll add u to the throne and keep an eye on your character :) stay safe in HC and cya in races!

Very nice build and guide Invalesco.

Rolled a Shadow following it 2 days ago, lvl 48 atm, died only once until now (like 6 of those red squid things suicided at me at the same time and 1 shot me :O)

Anyway, got a few questions, would be glad if you could answer them:

1. For us regular mortals who can't get our hands on a 6L, what is the support gem you would remove from LS?

2. Why don't you use Weapon Elemental Damage on LS? Out of all the support gems, that one increases the damage the most to me. Granted, I'm only level 48 and I have a decent amount of elemental damage from my weapon and rings, but I was just wondering. What about Melee Physical Damage?

3. Until you get to the final stages of the build, are Increased Crit Chance and Damage still useful or is it better to substitute them for something?

Thanks :D

Ouch, and yes that's a common death zone :p

1. tbh the 6L isn't really necessary haha. I would remove increased critical strikes from it. The DPS drop isn't really significant anyway.

2. that's a good point. Yes, WED increases the dps of LS projectiles the most. However, I wanted the 3 greens on my Chestpiece and if I were to want another red socket for WED as well, I would need 3G, 2R and 1B on a pure ES chestpiece which is near impossible to achieve, so I settled for the 3G, 2B, 1R combi. Another downside of WED is it has a 170% mana cost multiplier which increases the mana cost substantially to the point where it may not be sustainable. Melee Physical Damage only affects the damage of the initial melee hit and will not affect the projectile damage at all.

3. Ya it'll probably be better to leave out increased crit chance and crit damage till you get to the latter stages of the build

Hey guys, played all day today because this build is so freaking fun.

Just wanted to show an update of my guy. This guy is way stronger than totems, and tankier.

Level 64 now, planning for level 74 ish.

I got lucky with the colour coordination of the helmet. 2 G, 1 R , 1 B. About 5275 ES with discipline. Gems still need leveling, and swapping with enfeeble / critical weakness. Since it's hardcore, probably best to play more cautious.

But MAN, it clears maps fast.

P.s. I have an exam tomorrow at 9am. You screwed me Invy, ya screwed me!

Edit: Watching you kill double vaals, was more inspiring to play the build than doing 10k dps. And yes, this build is incredibly fun. I was just getting tired of playing POE, until this happened.

Oops sorry hope u did ok for ur exam! :p
And yup HC being HC I tend to build for more survivability/safety myself. Try to get itself a chayula and try it out. You'll sacrifice a bit of dps but the increased survivability u get and the smoothness of the gameplay will be unmatched. Once you try it out u'll be hooked. My fav ammy ever!

I made a post yesterday asking about an LS build and while it did go largely unnoticed some of the questions I posed you answered in your OP in this thread. I figured I would consolidate the two unanswered questions here for anyone else (as this thread seems to have a little bit of traffic). The answers to the last two questions are probably somewhere in this thread, but I wasn't able to find them.

Spell Damage/Spell Crit/Spell Crit Multi - Do these nodes affect the lightning damage from LS in any way? I would assume not, but I've been wrong before.

Adder's Touch - Is this node worth it at end-game? I've read that it does approximately 10% of your damage as chaos damage over 2 seconds. Ideally with this much crit and crit multiplier I will hopefully be 1-2 shotting most normal mobs so I'm kinda on the fence about going out of my way to get Adder's. My second question regarding AT is this. Will the projectiles from LS also proc AT as a dot if they crit?

This last question is just more for reference, but I'm still curious about it.

+Lightning Damage vs Projectile Damage - Does anyone know which gives better returns? Obviously there are fewer projectile nodes to choose from as a Shadow making it a less efficient route to go, but it would still be nice to know.

Thanks in advance, I want to try this build out soon it looks like a lot of fun and it will be a nice break from playing exclusively duelist for the past 4 months. :P

Someone would probably have answered it sooner or later. :) i'm just a tad busy for the coming few days so it's taking all my time as it is answering pms and posting on my threads. sry abt that! :)

1. Nope that don't affect LS in any way. LS is an attack not a spell

2. Yes Adder's Touch is incredible. Don't worry about the DoT aspect, that's minor and adds some extra oomph to the node. The main thing is the 66% Increased Crit Multiplier. Yes, if your projectiles crit, AT is processed as well. Your projectiles do anything your melee attack can, be it life leeching, mana leeching, processing on hit effects, etc.

3. It depends on how you're planning to use LS.
Both the melee hit and projectile damage are 50% Lightning damage and 50% Physical damage, just that the projectile damage is lesser. With regards to LS alone, if you're using it as a melee hit, the %Lightning damage nodes will boost your dps much more. If however you're using LS as a ranged attack, by virtue of the projectiles dealing 50/50 damage, %projectile damage node would boost the overall projectile dps more than what the %lightning damage node would.

That said, projectile damage only affects LS projectiles and will not affect any other melee attacks that you're planning to use whereas %lightning damage will affect other attacks as well. I like my characters to be versatile so I neglect %projectile damage because I don't want it to only boost one skill and not affect the others. If however you're planning on being a dedicated Lightning Striker, the %projectile damage will probably be a decent choice for yourself.

holy crap! i just speced into CI @ lvl 47/ruthless (bit overleveled but needed better ES equip).
I thought the build was fun without CI and just flicker a little bit.
But HOLY COW this build is INSANE with CI+blood rage+flicker! Damageoutput is just mindblowing and it's the most fun i had since ever :D when you get used to playing with CI it becomes sooo much fun!
