Looting -- The official thread for discussing the loot system. Updated 18th March, 2013.

While I think GGG came up with an interesting compromise, it still has issues like many have pointed out before.

Allocated loot is easily one of my favorite feature of Diablo 3. It promotes cooperation and it just makes the game more enjoyable. I can tell you right now that if a very rare item dropped for my class and I failed to pick it up for some reason, I would rage quit the game immediately.

The issue with FFA and the proposed compromise is that it moves the focus of the game from the combat to the loot. While finding loot is one of the main reasons why people like playing ARPGs, most people do it primarily because they enjoy building their character and slaying monsters. The looting aspect of the game needs to enhance the combat by rewarding the players for slaying monsters, it should not distract from the experience by forcing people to stop fighting in order to gather loot.

With that said, I realize that some people like FFA, so my suggestion would be to let the "host" decide what the loot rules are before creating the game. There is no better option than to let the players play the game the way they want to.

If missing one drop makes you quit the game, you shouldn't be playing the game.

That being said, if there are options: everyone's happy. If you take away those options to force everyone to "share": more people will be angry. If you see a group using a loot option you don't like, don't join that group.

In a game about full-customizability (type that 3 times fast), why would you want to dismiss options?

Certainly don't want to dismiss options. I was thinking about it from a coding perspective and imagined it would be easier to set a "static" setting for each game mode.

If GGG can allow the "party leader" of a game on servers to have the option for public/private loot, then I'm certainly for that option. In my mind that is a lot more complex than what I suggested but of course, GGG are the experts not me with some simple coding background. :)

Just to note - I didn't say quit the game. I said people would stop playing co-op.

From my programming experience, if you can make it one way AND you can make it the other way, you can easily make it both ways.

With all this talk of completely doing away with semi-FFA loot, I just wanted to voice my "pro-choice" opinion because I do like the setup they currently have and think it'd be a shame to waste. I've "missed" a lot of drops, but I'll still play co-op because the drops I get will still be much better than the ones I get playing solo. It also makes you think about your group. If you're with a bunch of strangers, you don't know what they're going to do. But over time, you'll find great people to group with and terrible people to stay away from.

I am also pro choice. You do recognize one of the problems though when you say "It also makes you think about your group", What FFA looting does for most people is make them want to avoid playing with strangers completely because missing one drop is not what makes people rage quit....its missing that one drop that you have been waiting 100+ HOURS for that was snaked away from you by a leach.

Exactly that^

That's why I said if a UNIQUE Axe dropped and some Witch in my co-op game grabbed it before I could get there I would be livid and regardless of what anyone else thinks, that WILL ruin co-op for many people.
If you want people to play with strangers, have an allocated loot system like D3.

This reason alone is enough ensure me wanting to play solo being a range class.
It should be party leaders' choice. But I'm willing to bet a majority of people would rather join groups where the loot drops are not FFA.
If you keep it FFA or even a variation of FFA rules, then you will indirectly force some people to play solo and/or with friends/guild only.

If you fail to see that then I'm sorry for you, because even I can't help you with basic logic and common sense.

The best solution is to provide options to the party leader. It's not best because it gives me what I want. It's best because it gives everyone what they want. They can choose for themselves.
