I know that I am coming in VERY late on this topic, and there have been hundreds of replies. Sadly I am sure this idea has already been pitched but why not make party options. Party options might consist of loot types:
Free-for-all
Rotating
Allocation
Random Roll

Free-for-all being just that, first come first serve on all items

Rotating meaning that items of Magic, Rare or Unique rarity will be given to players in a rotating manner starting with party leader and then going to member 2, 3, 4 etc.. and finally after the final member of a party gets an item starting back at the party leader.

Allocation being just as discussed where a time limit is allocated to the member of the party who got the final kill on a creature, time being based on distance from the character.

Random Roll is where the party can be set so that players roll a random number using a /roll function and a number system from 0-100. The party options could include the ability for the party leader to set up what types of items can be rolled on such as Normal, Magic, Rare and Unique; Magic, Rare and Unique only; Rare or Unique only.

Currency items I feel should also be included in any of the above party looting options. Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Looks reasonable to me. +1

Yep, there is a reason this system is standard amongst most MMO's that thrive.

When an item drops, how do you decide who gets the temporary allocation?

I think the item should be available for everyone in a chest or under a rock in the same place.

Thanks.

I'd love to have a system like that.

Seconded

Thirded

but i must agree, ranged characters will be a bit dissadvantaged with the whole FFA loot method and a 1-2 second allocation lock seems a bit short for ranged characters, i would say 5 seconds is the absolute max you can have it at, and even then you would have to contend with the remaining mob to get to the item, so this has to be tested to truly fine tune it.

Fourthed (is that a word?)

FFA was a major reason I stayed away from parties in Diablo 2.

*grumbles* stupid 3 embedded quote limit
maybe people could roll dice for the item highest dice win
I really like the count down idea but ranged fighters should get more time to acquire their loot

I think this is a great idea. Having free-for-all when I'm playing with a friend I trust is great, but when I have a public party I may not want to have everyone be able to loot right away - especially if I'm playing a ranger.
Why not implement the allocation time with attribute focus, like a Str item is allocated to Str chars like marauder; a Int item is allocated to Witch etc? if the str chars refuses to get the str item then let the others players pick it

Problem with looting by class is that, I might be playing a sorc but also have a ranger that needs gear. I think it should rotate though the members.
