PoE 1 or 2?

In my opinion, it depends on what exactly you want from an ARPG.

If you want a game where you're weak at first, but as your build gets stronger, you can go to wiping hordes of mobs at the touch of a single button and get a lot of loot (though not necessarily good loot) from it, play PoE 1.

If you want a more challenging game where you won't get to wipe mobs with one click but rather engage in meaningful combat with a lot less loot at the end, play PoE 2.

Keep in mind, however, that PoE 1 has received a decade worth of content and polish already, and that PoE 2 just very recently released its second league -- which means that PoE 2 doesn't have much to do after you're done with the campaign.
Currently? None. You say that POE1 seems "more casual" to you, that's because you don't know it. POE1 has a lot of content and an overwhelming amount of mechanics, crafting alone is a whole game by itself, you need to learn a lot to craft things that are actually worth something (for yourself or to sell), it's definitely not a "game for casuals," it's quite the opposite, and you'll probably end up VERY overwhelmed.

However, if you manage to ignore that feeling of "I have no idea what's going on," you'll realize that POE1 is the best ARPG you've ever played, it will hook you and you'll be screwed forever, you'll just want to play POE as much as you can xD.

POE2? Currently it's a "meme of a game," a complete disaster, this is just my opinion of course, some people are enjoying it, but THAT is a game for casuals, it’s barely a shadow of what POE1 is and will remain so for many years.

That said, right now I don't recommend either of the two. POE2, for the reasons I've already mentioned. POE1, even though it's the best, GGG seems to have decided to abandon it to focus on POE2, it feels like it's on "life support" or something like that. A new league is expected within a month, but we've been misled several times already, so we don't expect much anymore.

The only sure thing is that many of us feel we have been lied to, betrayed, and stabbed in the back with lies. If they do this to their most loyal users, you can't expect anything good from these people at this point.

You have Last Epoch, Grim Dawn, and a few others out there that are currently active. Last Epoch is improving little by little, and Grim Dawn is expected to release a new expansion soon, with new items, mechanics, classes. Also, it has a VERY well-written campaign story, truly top-notch. It’s not as massive in endgame content as POE, but it's still one of the best ARPGs nowadays.

Don't forget No Rest for the wicked, this is the game Jonathan actually wants to make, yet the PoE code and nature of an ARPG don't go well together. You'll end up with an isometric souls when you steer away from the formula
If you want an honest statement POE1 is the better game of the two... I still cant fathom how they fuked poe2 so hard. Dont copy last epochs engame and make it worse... This is beyond me.
