Can anyone recommend a metal band?

Good to see you still around Charan. Moderator now? Hah, impressive. =)

Have been since..uhm...August last year! Keep trying to quit, but they won't let me.

Good to see you BACK. :P

Regarding that music, it's sort of generic video game hard rock. After FFX did 'Otherworld' as its intro, it became a lot more popular to do this sort of heavier, harder rock/metal usage (both of the Dissidia games, Blue Dragon come to mind). I was surprised to hear it in an MGS game, but I hear the gameplay of MGR is significantly more action-orientated than the MGS games. Makes sense.

I did some digging, and it's composed by Jamie Christopherson, who typically does more bombastic orchestral scores. That said, a former member of Machine Head worked on the soundtrack as well, so perhaps there's some influence there. The vocals are a little Linkin Parkish at times, particularly 'Samuel'.

There are also lots of electronic sounds in there that most metal wouldn't bother with.

You could try Yousei Teikoku for a similar mix of electronica and harder guitar/drumming, if you can handle Japanese female vocals. They've evolved from a generic jpop/game 'band' to something very close to metal nowadays. Their shtick is a 'fairy empire' (which is what Yousei Teikoku translates as) and so a lot of their songs are anthemic and just a little...well, German-tinged. They often subtitle their band name 'Das Feinreich', which I figure means something LIKE the Fairy Empire...but that 'reich' bit is fairly suggestive.

Huh. My mace dude is now an actual cultist of Chayula. That's kinda wild.
All that folk metal is amazing. You guys showed me more kinds of "metal" than I knew there was.
Think I'll buy the Whispered album.
I would recommend the following, in no particular order:
Tremonti
Soilwork
Sevendust
Eye Empire
Submersed
Projected
Egypt Central
Ra
Soil
Call Me No One
Dangerous New Machine
Stereomud

Also, the metal covers of Blue Stahli songs, such as this, are amazing.

I'll post others when I think of em :P

edit: added youtube links to a song from each band
Reimur: even though you're wrong, why would you have faith in diamond supporters? you're talking about a group of people that are so autistic that they would spend 1000 dollars on pixels. we're almost the most idiotic group of people in this community. second to hardcore players.

Soilwork,
Atrocity,
Children of Bodem
Symphony X
Devil Driver < One of my favorites
Power Glove < Amazing speed metal
Night wish ( some times you just have to listen to them her voice is soothing in a weird way)
Dethklock < Really main stream since the show
Bullet for my valentine
As I lay dieing
All the remains
American Head Charge < Don't even know if there still around
Shadows fall < They made me learn how to play my 5 string bass

I like a mixture of metal, some screamo-black metal-viking metal- symphonic black metal

Ok pop quiz, who sings the song, jump the fuck up!

Amazing song to get you pumped up, Corey Taylor even did a rendition with them.

If you like folk metal then I highly recommend you listen to Eluveitie. They use a lot of instruments that add to the Celtic folk vibe: mandolins, violin, bagpipes, some device called the hurdy gurdy.
No folk at all but one of my favourite bands are Agalloch.
Trippy music, great compositions.Listening to them while grinding
through dark/western forest.

I only know of Epitaph, Ithyphallic, and Cradle of Filth. And If you know any good Metalcore bands besides Walls of Jericho and The Devil Wears Prada, that'd be great.

Ithyphallic is the album from Nile ?
Epitaph the band ? Hell yeah !
CoF were great until Midian imo. After I don't like them so much.

Charan is right when comparing metal to ice cream :)
Folk metal isn't my cup of thing but I have some bands that I like from this genre.

Vintersorg (more progressive later albums but great overall)
Moonsorrow (more black/viking oriented but kick some serious ass)
Windir (more black oriented also but great)
Finntroll (great band overall)
Ensiferum (great band also)

I haven't checked them but people go nuts about them so they might be good.

Don't forget people on of the first metal bands (first maybe?) to put some folk in
our metal.

Almighty Skyclad ! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nD9zi_WliSA \m/
To crit or not to crit ?

Oh God. I can talk for years about metal.

I'll just mention one band that hasn't been listed.

Primordial.

Right!

I have listened to all kinds of metal (though I'm no fan of -cores), but it's only heavy and trash for me now. All I listen now is psychedelic rock, by the bands around 60's & 70's. Thanks to my papa, he has given me lots of LP's.

Check these out to see if you'll like the sound,

Frustration by Mystic Tide
Strange by Aorta
Trieulogy by Kak
In the Night by Power of Zeus

Hope you'll give them a try, have fun! Again, I'll never get bored of sharing music, so you can ask for more :)

Funny, my best friend of 25 years has done the same thing -- 'graduated' from metal to psychedelic rock and proto-metal.

He's really into a band called Colour Haze right now.

__

Off to see Eluvietie in a few weeks!

__

Skyclad are great but a bit repetitive, I feel.

__

Agalloch also gets my big thumbs up.

__

I can't stand 'cores' either but In This Moment and Between the Buried and Me somehow work for me. Most other 'core' I find to be 'metal for dummies', really.
