(June 23/24) Hardcore Ladder Race
This is a temporary three hour hardcore league with more prizes than normal.
The event will run from 9am to 12noon New Zealand time on Sunday (June 24 2012). This is 2pm Saturday, Pacific time. Here is a link for more time zone conversions. The league will be hardcore. Characters who die will be moved out of this league and into the Default league. NEW CHARACTERS MUST BE CREATED IN THIS LEAGUE TO BE ELIGIBLE. After the end of the league, they'll be moved back into the normal Hardcore or Default league depending on whether they died. The league will be open for character creation 30 minutes before the start of the competition. Prizes: At the end of the tournament, we will award the prizes in the Hardcore league on a character that we add to your account. If you want to transfer these prizes to the Default league, then just kill that character. Random Currency Prizes: For this competition, we'll be giving the winners a certain number of random currency items from the list below. These are picked with equal weighting using a random generator.
Top Prizes: The top five players of each class by experience will receive prizes.
Witches:
Templars:
Rangers:
Marauders:
Duelists:
Shadows:
Prizes for reaching specific levels and staying alive: In this event, players win prizes for being alive at certain levels at the end of the event. If you reach one of these thresholds and die, you will not receive these prizes. Multiple characters on the same account can receive prizes if they are still alive at the following thresholds. Level 29: 30 random currency items Level 28: 20 random currency items Level 27: 16 random currency items Level 26: 13 random currency items Level 25: 11 random currency items Level 24: 10 random currency items Level 23: 9 random currency items Level 20-22: 8 random currency items Level 18-19: 7 random currency items Level 16-17: 6 random currency items Level 14-15: 5 random currency items Level 12-13: 4 random currency items Level 10-11: 3 random currency items Quest Prizes: The first player to complete each of these quests wins the prize listed. If you're in a party then only one of you will win the prize. The player will be selected randomly.
Full-clear Prizes: The first player to kill all of the monsters in any of the following areas will receive the listed currency items for that area. If you are in a party, then the player who gets the killing blow on the final monster gets the prize.
Miscellaneous: The game version will be whatever the current 0.9.10 version is (probably 0.9.10f). Please note that because this is a hardcore league, a single death can disqualify you. Our decision on the winners is final. Bugs and mistakes will get in the way for many players and this is why we are running an event like this. If you lose your ability to participate due to a bug, please tell us about it and we'll do our best to fix it. We can't change the outcome of the event due to this. Event objectives are getting dull. Why not prizes for unique monster kills? First person to kill oozeback, first to kill kuduku, first to kill chatters, etc. Or perhaps things like person with the most kills, person who identifies the most items, or picks up the most blue items. Something, anything to break up the monotony.
Even variations on existing objectives. Award prizes for first to kill each bandit, first to aid each bandit. First to complete the weavers quest or any of the other act 2 quests instead of the same act 1 quests. Full clears for areas other than the usual 3. Make them random though. Having the same objectives each race just makes the pros that much more prepared. If the objectives vary, then everyone is on a more level playing field. Hell, surprise people an hour before the race with the event objectives. Last edited by FaceLicker#6894 on Jun 21, 2012, 9:32:24 PM

" This is pretty much why I've stopped participating. Most of the awards are of the "first to rush X" variety, which means the more practiced rushers have an inherent advantage and well tweaked rushing builds. It's simply not fun to blast your way through things at lightning speed hoping you don't get pipped by a few seconds. Weekend ladder races are basically a way for a small subset of the community to get richer. |

I think many people are turned off by the 'hardcore' flavor of the races.
I don't see what being hardcore adds to the race except hoping the people who always win gets an unlucky death. My last hardcore race felt annoying and frustrating even while alive. And my unlucky death just added the "anti-climatic" to it. Even had I won I would skip future hardcore races, just wasn't fun to me. Now if there was some solid testing GGG needed that would be a different story, I'm glad to torture myself if it helps the game. But I don't care about the prizes - just the fun factor. I'm the Ps guy: Psomm, Pso, Psong, pso-on and pso-phorth.

I can tell this event isn't for some people, but there are other people on the HC server that THRIVE on this kind of event and rushing against other players. Having the event HC means that you have the option of having the won items on either HC or transferring the items to default via dying, whereas if it was a default only event, there is no way to get items to HC.

I was simply stating what the HC race feels like currently in beta form, and would figure GGG would rather see more participation. I don't know GGG's testing focus is with the races, I remember a post about what prizes will make people want to play. But the flavor (Hardcore) is what's turning many off.
I quite enjoy HC. I had several in 9.6ish until the e_ooms ruined it for me. And now that its fixed I'm quite happy to go back in once I'm ready to level another character, just not at the beginning of summer vacation for my kids :). I'm the Ps guy: Psomm, Pso, Psong, pso-on and pso-phorth.
