Awakening (Ultimate Skills)

An adaptation of this idea without needing a new tree...

"Limit" is reached when max charges are up. Basically.. this is a variant of Discharge.

In other words.. this sort of already exists, but it is in the form of a skill gem. Getting a new one for each charge type would be neat, but not just elemental damage. Make the gems support. This gets you the "limit break" feel without needing a new tree.

Power discharge:

Support, spell, single target
when maximum Power charges have been acquired, all Power charges are spent on next use of supported spell, adding X% damage as chaos damage per power charge spent. (maybe?) The spell will always critical strike.


Frenzy discharge:

Support, Melee, projectile
when maximum Frenzy charges have been acquired, all Frenzy charges are spent on next use of supported skill, adding X% damage as physical damage per Frenzy charge spent. (maybe?) 5% of the physical damage of the skill is leeched as life.


Endurance discharge:

Support, AoE (melee only)
when maximum Endurance charges have been acquired, all Endurance charges are spent on next use of supported skill, adding X% damage as ??? damage per Endurance charge spent, Area of effect increased by Y% per power Endurance Charge spent. (maybe?) Affected enemies are knocked back and stunned.


If you really want to make them OP, then make these keystones in the skill tree, applying to any next used skill (of the appropriate type) as the charges are acquired. I figured Chaos damage would be best for Power, with the critical strike in line with the flavor. Frenzy would be physical with life leech as the added effect for the Frenzy flavor, and I guess endurance would also be physical, as endurance charges are typically melee builds anyway, with knockback and stun for flavor.

Balancing these would be tough, since there is plenty of gear and skill gem builds that seem to instantly generate full charges. Perhaps something like a cooldown on charge acquisition, like "cannot gain more than one X charge every 2 seconds" or something.

This seems like an idea for PoE 2 not the current game.
I dislike adding such revolutionary mechanics (especially the new tree system). Either you find a way to include them in the current game or just drop the idea.

They could be: special colored gems (and special colorec sockets) or Keystones but keep yourself in the current framework pls.
But I did find a way to include in the game.

The tree I suggest is simpler than the existing one.
All of the nodes are also passives.

The ultimates are just skills, but instead of available from gems, they're something else.
Alternatively, they could be available from Gems too.

And it's very important to reinforce that the Awakenings would NOT be "almighty ultimate skills of absolute destruction" like in some games.

They would have various effects, from plain powerful nukes to simple enhancements to your Gem skills, or even shapeshifting.

I'm glad you mentioned shapeshifting. That's exactly what I thought when I first read the thread title. Stuff like Werewolf, Vampire, Archon, etc. are great mechanics but they don't make sense as spam skills.

It's okay to make Werewolf continuously active if it requires continuous drain of an important resource (or two).

It might drain spirit AND mana, or something.

Alot of stuff could be done.

Ultimates can spend Spirit and Mana if needed, or Spirit and Life, or Spirit + Life + Mana.

bumping because this idea would add another layer of depth to the game as Cast on X gems did. Even if it is a 5% buff to characters it still adds one more layer to build your character around, bust out a calculator and figure out stuff that may or may not work.
So Vaal Gems are out.
But of all the ways you could generate Souls... GGG went ahead and made it exclusively kills.

Sigh...
