I thought catacombs would just be a better place because it's fairly easy and it has higher mob level (1 less than max lvl outside maps) but the lack of a unique boss and the crappy large chests make it less attractive overall (and elemental skeletons are slowing down quite a lot)

Same here, farming Gravicius with IIR/IIQ takes forever because of chain-lightning mobs, unless your IIQ/IIR stuff has good lightning resistance. And I have yet to see something good dropping on him.
Catacombs gives nice high level stuff but are relatively slow as well, due to being in the dark when you're low life.
Piety is only nice to farm in group, not solo.

Which means unless you can farm in group, you're stuck with Docks until you can get the Shavronne chest, which is notoriously difficult since every caster class wants it...

Small addition to the build: I tried lightning penetration to increase DPS, but found it to be moderately useful since you can cast Conductivity as well. I have found Elemental Proliferation to be much more useful in case of DPS lack. Above lv10, this gem will make whole groups of mobs being shocked instantly as soon as one is. And the effect remains with cadavers. It's probably less useful at very high levels but it has help me a lot to compensate for my weak equipment.

is there any gear recommendations for level 30-35?

I'm 1 point away from changing to dual totem but i only have melee gear right now.
I use cleave to level to 32 so far.
are there any cheap uniques i can get the will help me out when i go dual totem?

Honestly, at that level I had this which I'm still wearing that helped me out a bit, but really just relied on the 4 link and some other rares I've picked up form other characters.

Hm since I use zombies my totems live longer and I die less. There is a support gem "minion resistances" that gives your totem resistance. But I don't know if it is worth to use a gem slot just for this.

But I also have sometimes problems when I do map runs with a friend. My totems die often.
