Scrotie's Top 20 Most Skilled Players of Season 1

I agree with some of the OPs placement on the list. As much as I <3 Nugi, there are several players in the 11-20 slots that should be placed higher than him. Actually a couple should even be before CWU, Fraggy, etc.

I was going by performance per attempt. Nugi didn't play much -- 15 attempts, when most other top players had a little over 30 -- and got two first-place finishes doing so. You could argue that's equivalent to 4 first-place finishes, if only he would have played more. Nugi and Choilicious are so close to each other in performance this season that I could have easily switched their positions; it's fair to consider Nugi not as 9th, but as tied for 8th.

cwu was amazing this season, and talk of him being anywhere outside of the top 3 is insanity.

Fraggy did manage to achieve the highest reward points per attempt of any player; his 15.2 beats even Kripp's 15.0. He wasn't as good about first-place finishes, which is why he has the spot he has; the only way he wouldn't be sixth is if NoObLeR was.

I really enjoyed reading the list. I loved SC: BW power ranking on teamliquid.net even when I had never played brood war so reading all the write-ups for the players was nice. Too bad it was not all top 20 though :(

I do feel though by valuing rank 1 overall so much you are showing favoritism to classes more suited to racing (aka non witch classes lol).

I hope you continue doing this for solo races.. even better would be doing it a few times during the season rather than just at the end. It would maybe give me more motivation to practice for racing. Lately I have been losing my motivation because I feel like GGG does not really care about racers at all....... ( no /classladder after months, no solo season ladder, no rewards worth actually practicing for races etc )

Kripp's #1, I smell bias. He's the pewdiepie of streams: He makes streams constantly, is ultra-popular, yet when you stop being biased due to his popularity you realize he's a sub-par player that spouts BS and makes a large amount of noise.

All this is moot anyway, ARPGs don't require skill. All you need is common sense and luck. There's no muscle memory, there's no twitch reactions or reflexes, there's hardly any strategy beyond "hit and run". All you need is good gear and outlevel your area and 99% of death is avoided, the other 1% is alt-F4'd or double-logged away (both techniques the aforementioned only learned about and passed off as his own, not actually discovered).

If you're looking for skill in a game, most of it is centered on FPS and MOBAs. That's about as "skilled" as games get.

To me.. the less a game requires skill the more skill it requires to do better than others. And.. there is muscle memory, twitch reactions, mouse accuracy in races if you want to save seconds every minute which adds up overtime. You also have to keep changing the way you are racing slightly to account for RNG the same way in SC2 you would have to keep changing your game plan to account for what information you get from scouting. Anyone can win a single race the skill is being able to consistently perform well in each race but still... I think you should try to win a 1 hour solo race with just normal settings. It is pretty surprising how much exp a racer can get compared to the average player.

Also.. lol @ not mentioning RTS but mentioning FPS and mobas................... Pretty sure SC2 for example requires infinitely more skill than a moba. MOBAs I would say actually are pretty similar to racing in path of exile in what is needed to be a good racer.

Actually, before putting out the final list I was thinking about what standards I wanted to set, and by which metrics, in order to make top 10. One of those was "at least 2 non-class-specific first-place solo finishes." Going by that metric, you wouldn't have made it... but I was so impressed with your witch dominance and nonstandard point-scoring strategy that not having you somewhere in the top ten just felt wrong. Writing your blurb was easy.

I do intend on doing coverage of Season 2 solo races, once the season starts. Most likely in a print format, perhaps on YouTube, but I am not streaming. I doubt I will cover party races.

Its a good list, I'm hellboars friend but there is no way he should be in the top 20, let alone 12.

I didn't actually watch Hellboar. He did win one though. A good chunk of 11-20 was guessing based on stats with very little prior knowledge...

...next time I write one of these up, I'll try to be more expert on the material.

Oh yea I don't fault you at all. You didn't mention things like Noobler still having the Witch solo record for instance.

You have no idea what you are talking about. You can slam his fanboys all you want but calling him a sub-par player is hilarious.
