Experiences from Path of Exile so far

i think the f2p model is going to give this game a huge population .

i do hope they have some party/team/search function - one thing i would add would be a language field , so we can more easily find people who speak our languages . possibly a dual field or a toggle for 'english' because not all english is the same .

I would like to help:)

He can't disclose any information that we haven't talked about.

The version he's playing does have waypoints though.

though Jonathan did make a post in the suggestion thread about why there won't be torchlight-like checkpoints in PoE...

The thing with Titan Quest is that it didn't have random level generation. That means that they can place rebirth fountains at controlled locations. Rebirth fountains in TQ were generally placed at specific choke points in the level that can be specified by the designer.

If we wanted to do checkpoints then we couldn't do them in that way. Placing checkpoints randomly around the level probably wouldn't work.

In order to do checkpoints in Path of Exile you would have to come up with some kind of rule for when they occur.

An example is a rule like "When out of combat for 30 seconds, checkpoint" or some such. Already I can see plenty of problems with these kinds of schemes. Players would want to stand there for 30 seconds after each battle to make sure it checkpoints. The opposite of fun.

Something else to bear in mind with checkpoints is that games with checkpoints typically have one key feature. The world is reset back to the state it was in when you went through the checkpoint.

Games which make the decision not to do this can be fairly contentions. Do you remember the discussion when Bioshock came out with its Vita Chambers? I myself remember fights which were ultimately just respawn spamming at the Vita chamber and attritioning monsters.

Thanks Gaza for the well written, informative post. Chirs picked the right man to post his Alpha impressions. ;)

Some of the decisions being made on this game make me feel like I am making it. It really shows when hardcore gamers are calling the shots at a studio. I only wish it was more commonly done.

In the sea of crap titles out there(or in development) it's nice to have one to look forward too. I am fortunate enough to be able to buy any and all games I want however, the one title I am really looking forward to is free.....how bizzare.

Hurry up 3G so I can start throwing money at your shop. The game sounds awsome and I've always had a soft spot in my heart for indies.

Best wishes 3G
On the topic of checkpoints. I understand the problem of trying to implement both static checkpoints and a randomly generated world.

However, wouldn't it be possible to have random zone A lead to check point B that then follows into random zone C? Think of it like a bridge between two islands. Not sure why that wouldn't work. Of course, I am not a computer programmer so I may be missing something entirely.
