It shows major losses of IS territory mainly far away from Damascus. After Assad allowed Isis to gain territory (so the west would be distracted from him) this is actually a good strategy by the coalition. EDIT: when I posted the bbc link this morning, the map showed a comparison between January 2016 and December 2016, in December you could see a gain of Isis territory around Palmyra and a strip owned by Isis extending from there to Damascus, while in total there was a loss of territory esp. in Iraq and the Syrian north. So apparently they changed it to the current date just today. The text below still refers to December 2016. "[...]IS militants were in control of about 60,400 sq km (23,300 sq miles) in December 2016, compared with about 78,000 square km (30,100 sq miles) in January, the report by IHS Conflict Monitor says.
