EDIT: a small thing to consider:
with your build, i think going with pathfinder and "alwyas poison" effect will result in MUCH higher dps than crit etc...

i feel like maybe something like this:

this tree for example

can be stronger than your crit version:
+ higher life (also can use life on gloves)
+ higher life regen
+ higher chaos damage
+ you will ALWAYS poison
+ more jewel slots (for life / faster casting / resist / whatever)

- no crit (but becuase wither effect together with poison, i think it will be stronger in general)
- smaller AOE (15%, and also i have more left so you can try and get that if that is important)

Thanks for the suggestion.

I did consider scaling poison, but for it to truly shine you'd need skill duration nodes, which messes up lightning warp. There's no other movement skill I can use. For now, Poison is a possible 6th link, along with Void Manipulation for front-loaded damage.

I *might* try out another build with Essence Drain/Contagion on high-level CWDT. Only needs to trigger every 1 - 2 secs to spread high damage DoT. It would be less spammy, which is a major issue with Scold builds.

PS - Do you also die at every level up? I find it hilarious every time :D

I have made Marauder Berserker with Vaal Pact :D

Berserker (with VP) gives me constant 100% (or 120% - Im not sure if increased life leech from tree works with that) instant leech and 51% increased attack speed. The downside is 2% mana leech - so when I stop jumping I have full mana in like 1.5s meaning my flask stop working at that point. I use health flask with mana removal for that reason. Benefits are I can't really die unless I forgot to use a flask. Can do any reflect, any map mod except blood magic obviously.

I'd think Wither double-dipping would be plenty of damage for poison to be effective, you're casting like 8x per second, right?

I theorycrafted the Wither build because I noticed that Apep's Rage are cheap this league, so I'll probably make that version once the gear goes to Standard. Even with no inc duration nodes, if you replace AoE with Inc Dura then you should be able to stack something like 30-40 wither instances, or 300% Double Dipping damage multiplier against single target. You would have to go pathfinder and get free poison for it to be worthwhile though, I think.

How's the safety of the Wither build? I was thinking of running a cwdt Blade Vortex+Knockback, to make sure nothing got in melee range, do you think that'd be worth it?

I'll try to take a harder look at the numbers, but it'll be tough. A crit build theoretically gives good shock uptime, so the actual DPS is higher. Assassin also has +40% to DoT, and the Poison gem itself is +38% damage and 10% duration (quality). The big drawback would be that Poison only applies to about half my DPS (on the 5/6 link), so definitely a big pro to Pathfinder in that respect.

I did try to slot in Knockback somewhere at 1 point, but it wasn't very impressive with BV. It actually seemed better with Ice/Shock Nova. In the end, I decided it wasn't worth sacrificing an additional DPS gem. If I really wanted another CC, I'd go Blind or Summon Skeletons.

Edit: Regarding safety - it's a Scold's build. You'll die. A lot. =D When you miss a flask. When you level up. When you can't see ground shit exploding from all the spam. When Nullifier takes away your flask effect. I'm sure the projectile version is much safer of course.

Just to mention - divination flask has 100% uptime with this build. And you know what divination gives? Screw Inc Q/R. It gives 4 max resists.
